An Abstract Formal Basis for Digital Crowds
Crowdsourcing, together with its related approaches, has become very popular
in recent years. All crowdsourcing processes involve the participation of a
digital crowd, a large number of people that access a single Internet platform
or shared service. In this paper we explore the possibility of applying formal
methods, typically used for the verification of software and hardware systems,
in analysing the behaviour of a digital crowd. More precisely, we provide a
formal description language for specifying digital crowds. We represent digital
crowds in which the agents do not directly communicate with each other. We
further show how this specification can provide the basis for sophisticated

Storia: Summarizing Social Media Content based on Narrative Theory using Crowdsourcing
People from all over the world use social media to share thoughts and
opinions about events, and understanding what people say through these channels
has been of increasing interest to researchers, journalists, and marketers
alike. However, while automatically generated summaries enable people to
consume large amounts of data efficiently, they do not provide the context
needed for a viewer to fully understand an event. Narrative structure can
provide templates for the order and manner in which this data is presented to
create stories that are oriented around narrative elements rather than
summaries made up of facts. In this paper, we use narrative theory as a
framework for identifying the links between social media content. To do this,
we designed crowdsourcing tasks to generate summaries of events based on
commonly used narrative templates. In a controlled study, for certain types of
events, people were more emotionally engaged with stories created with
narrative structure and were also more likely to recommend them to others
compared to summaries created without narrative structure
Calendar.help: Designing a Workflow-Based Scheduling Agent with Humans in the Loop
Although information workers may complain about meetings, they are an
essential part of their work life. Consequently, busy people spend a
significant amount of time scheduling meetings. We present Calendar.help, a
system that provides fast, efficient scheduling through structured workflows.
Users interact with the system via email, delegating their scheduling needs to
the system as if it were a human personal assistant. Common scheduling
scenarios are broken down using well-defined workflows and completed as a
series of microtasks that are automated when possible and executed by a human
otherwise. Unusual scenarios fall back to a trained human assistant who
executes them as unstructured macrotasks. We describe the iterative approach we
used to develop Calendar.help, and share the lessons learned from scheduling
thousands of meetings during a year of real-world deployments. Our findings
provide insight into how complex information tasks can be broken down into
repeatable components that can be executed efficiently to improve productivity.Comment: 10 page
Capturing Ambiguity in Crowdsourcing Frame Disambiguation
FrameNet is a computational linguistics resource composed of semantic frames,
high-level concepts that represent the meanings of words. In this paper, we
present an approach to gather frame disambiguation annotations in sentences
using a crowdsourcing approach with multiple workers per sentence to capture
inter-annotator disagreement. We perform an experiment over a set of 433
sentences annotated with frames from the FrameNet corpus, and show that the
aggregated crowd annotations achieve an F1 score greater than 0.67 as compared
to expert linguists. We highlight cases where the crowd annotation was correct
even though the expert is in disagreement, arguing for the need to have
multiple annotators per sentence. Most importantly, we examine cases in which
crowd workers could not agree, and demonstrate that these cases exhibit
ambiguity, either in the sentence, frame, or the task itself, and argue that
collapsing such cases to a single, discrete truth value (i.e. correct or

'Preditors': Making citizen journalism work
Although there is great interest in citizen journalism services that harness user-generated content, the continuing contribution of professional staff who coordinate such efforts is often overlooked. This paper offers a typology of the work of the professional "preditors" who continue to operate at the heart of "pro-am" journalism initiatives. It shows that their work takes place along four dimensions – content work, networking, community work and tech work. It suggests that this is a structural change in journalistic practice, which has implications for journalists' professional identity and journalism education
Middleware Technologies for Cloud of Things - a survey
The next wave of communication and applications rely on the new services
provided by Internet of Things which is becoming an important aspect in human
and machines future. The IoT services are a key solution for providing smart
environments in homes, buildings and cities. In the era of a massive number of
connected things and objects with a high grow rate, several challenges have
been raised such as management, aggregation and storage for big produced data.
In order to tackle some of these issues, cloud computing emerged to IoT as
Cloud of Things (CoT) which provides virtually unlimited cloud services to
enhance the large scale IoT platforms. There are several factors to be
considered in design and implementation of a CoT platform. One of the most
important and challenging problems is the heterogeneity of different objects.
This problem can be addressed by deploying suitable "Middleware". Middleware
sits between things and applications that make a reliable platform for
communication among things with different interfaces, operating systems, and
architectures. The main aim of this paper is to study the middleware
technologies for CoT. Toward this end, we first present the main features and
characteristics of middlewares. Next we study different architecture styles and
service domains. Then we presents several middlewares that are suitable for CoT
based platforms and lastly a list of current challenges and issues in design of

Crowdsourcing General Computation
We present a direction of research on principles and methods that can enable general problem solving via human computation systems. A key challenge in human computation is the effective and efficient coordination of problem solving. While simple tasks may be easy to partition across individuals, more complex tasks highlight challenges and opportunities for more sophisticated coordination and optimization, leveraging such core notions as problem decomposition, subproblem routing and solution, and the recomposition of solved subproblems into solutions. We discuss the interplay between algorithmic paradigms and human abilities,and illustrate through examples how members of a crowd can play diverse roles in an organized problem-solving process, serving not only as "data oracles" at the endpoints of computation, but also as modules for decomposing problems, controlling the algorithmic progression, and performing human program synthesis.Engineering and Applied Science
