An exploration of knowledge and understanding â the eighth flow
The argument for understanding Lean construction as a socio-technical field is growing and the need to better consider the role of human beings within construction systems is becoming the dominant factor in project success. Many current attributes of lean already focus on people and on human engagement approaches but the field of lean construction addresses project environments that are often complex and highly variable. The authors argue that the successful delivery of these projects relies on the creation of a common understanding of the project objectives within the diverse value systems of project participants and wider society. Additionally, many of the new ways of working that lean thinking brings already support the creation of a common understanding and could be harnessed to better effect.
Based on a literature review and supported by case study examples the authors explore the nature of knowledge and understanding and position them within an eight flow model for construction production. The findings indicate a need to reconsider the development of a common understand for each project due to the tacit nature of experiential knowledge held within the project team and the specificity and complexity of the project environment. As a result effort is required to generate and maintain a common understanding throughout the project duration. The continued attention and action required to maintain this common understanding elevates it to a flow of equal status to those identified in Koskelaâs flow production model thus increasing the number of flows to eight. A significant lean construction case study is revisited and examined to identify interventions undertaken to achieve this generation and management of common understanding thus demonstrating that this development already exists, albeit intuitively, as an element of âlean thinkingâ
Knowledge society arguments revisited in the semantic technologies era
In the light of high profile governmental and international efforts to realise the knowledge society, I review the arguments made for and against it from a technology standpoint. I focus on advanced knowledge technologies with applications on a large scale and in open- ended environments like the World Wide Web and its ambitious extension, the Semantic Web. I argue for a greater role of social networks in a knowledge society and I explore the recent developments in mechanised trust, knowledge certification, and speculate on their blending with traditional societal institutions. These form the basis of a sketched roadmap for enabling technologies for a knowledge society

High redshift X-ray galaxy clusters. II. The L_X-T relationship revisited
In this paper we re-visit the observational relation between X-ray luminosity
and temperature for high-z galaxy clusters and compare it with the local L_X-T
and with theoretical models. To these ends we use a sample of 17 clusters
extracted from the Chandra archive supplemented with additional clusters from
the literature, either observed by Chandra or XMM-Newton, to form a final
sample of 39 high redshift (0.25 < z < 1.3) objects. Different statistical
approaches are adopted to analyze the L_X-T relation. The slope of the L_X-T
relation of high redshift clusters is steeper than expected from the
self-similar model predictions and steeper, even though still compatible within
the errors, than the local L_X-T slope. The distant cluster L_X-T relation
shows a significant evolution with respect to the local Universe: high-z
clusters are more luminous than the local ones by a factor ~2 at any given
temperature. The evolution with redshift of the L_X-T relation cannot be
described by a single power law nor by the evolution predicted by the
self-similar model. We find a strong evolution, similar or stronger than the
self-similar model, from z = 0 to z <0.3 followed by a much weaker, if any,
evolution at higher redshift. The weaker evolution is compatible with
non-gravitational models of structure formation. According to us a
statistically significant sample of nearby clusters (z < 0.25) should be
observed with the current available X-ray telescopes to completely exclude
observational effects due to different generation detectors and to understand
