In 2019 the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funded a series of projects as part of its UK-China Creative Partnerships Programme. Led by Abertay University in partnership with academic and industry partners across the UK and China, InGAME International was funded through this AHRC programme with the aim of studying the potential for UK-China cooperation and collaboration in the computer games sector. The project is linked to the AHRC Creative Industries Cluster, InGAME: Innovation for Games and Media Enterprise, which is also led by Abertay University in partnership with the University of Dundee and University of St Andrews. The games industry is one of the largest and fastest growing sectors in both the UK and the Chinese creative economies. In 2023, China was the largest gaming market globally with revenue forecast at 82.064billioncomparedwith82.064 billion compared with 7.94 billion in the UK (Statista, 2023). The growth in China’s market has long been the source of appeal for UK game developers and publishers seeking new routes to market. However, the divergence between the UK and China in terms of market profile, consumption patterns, leading companies, technologies, regulation, licensing, management, and business culture has presented ongoing difficulties for any UK based developer interested in engagement in- or with- China. It is from this basis that the current study sought to consolidate industry, legal, and regulatory knowhow with a view to providing a valuable resource to games professionals and researchers who have interests in UK-China collaboration. This Pathway to Collaboration report curates the cumulative knowledge and insight generated during the InGAME International programme, with an intended audience of games industry professionals and researchers interested in UK-China collaboration. At the heart of the research is an unprecedented qualitative study that involved in-depth interviews with 47 leading experts from the UK, China and other territories and with knowledge of games development, business, publishing, marketing, localisation, IP, copyright, regulation, markets, and sales. This report is the first comprehensive qualitative study to investigate the intersection between the UK and China games industries and markets at this scale and depth, providing readers with an invaluable, interactive resource that will support professionals and researchers to initiate new collaborations between the two nations.</p

Robustness, Heterogeneity and Structure Capturing for Graph Representation Learning and its Application

Graph neural networks (GNNs) are potent methods for graph representation learn- ing (GRL), which extract knowledge from complicated (graph) structured data in various real-world scenarios. However, GRL still faces many challenges. Firstly GNN-based node classification may deteriorate substantially by overlooking the pos- sibility of noisy data in graph structures, as models wrongly process the relation among nodes in the input graphs as the ground truth. Secondly, nodes and edges have different types in the real-world and it is essential to capture this heterogeneity in graph representation learning. Next, relations among nodes are not restricted to pairwise relations and it is necessary to capture the complex relations accordingly. Finally, the absence of structural encodings, such as positional information, deterio- rates the performance of GNNs. This thesis proposes novel methods to address the aforementioned problems: 1. Bayesian Graph Attention Network (BGAT): Developed for situations with scarce data, this method addresses the influence of spurious edges. Incor- porating Bayesian principles into the graph attention mechanism enhances robustness, leading to competitive performance against benchmarks (Chapter 3). 2. Neighbour Contrastive Heterogeneous Graph Attention Network (NC-HGAT): By enhancing a cutting-edge self-supervised heterogeneous graph neural net- work model (HGAT) with neighbour contrastive learning, this method ad- dresses heterogeneity and uncertainty simultaneously. Extra attention to edge relations in heterogeneous graphs also aids in subsequent classification tasks (Chapter 4). 3. A novel ensemble learning framework is introduced for predicting stock price movements. It adeptly captures both group-level and pairwise relations, lead- ing to notable advancements over the existing state-of-the-art. The integration of hypergraph and graph models, coupled with the utilisation of auxiliary data via GNNs before recurrent neural network (RNN), provides a deeper under- standing of long-term dependencies between similar entities in multivariate time series analysis (Chapter 5). 4. A novel framework for graph structure learning is introduced, segmenting graphs into distinct patches. By harnessing the capabilities of transformers and integrating other position encoding techniques, this approach robustly capture intricate structural information within a graph. This results in a more comprehensive understanding of its underlying patterns (Chapter 6)

Natural and Technological Hazards in Urban Areas

Get PDF
Natural hazard events and technological accidents are separate causes of environmental impacts. Natural hazards are physical phenomena active in geological times, whereas technological hazards result from actions or facilities created by humans. In our time, combined natural and man-made hazards have been induced. Overpopulation and urban development in areas prone to natural hazards increase the impact of natural disasters worldwide. Additionally, urban areas are frequently characterized by intense industrial activity and rapid, poorly planned growth that threatens the environment and degrades the quality of life. Therefore, proper urban planning is crucial to minimize fatalities and reduce the environmental and economic impacts that accompany both natural and technological hazardous events

Immune contexture monitoring in solid tumors focusing on Head and Neck Cancer

Strong evidences demonstrate a close interplay between the immune system and the biological development and clinical progression of solid tumors. The effect that the tumor immune microenvironment can have on the clinical behavior of the disease is referred as the immuno contexture. Nevertheless, the current clinical management of patients affected by cancer does not take into account any immunological features either for the staging or for the treatment choices. Head and Neck Cancer (HNSCC) represents the 7th most common cancer worldwide and it is characterized by a relatively poor prognosis and detrimental effect of treatments on the quality of life of patients. Beyond surgery and radiotherapy, few systemic treatments are available, mainly represented by platinum-based chemotherapy or cetuximab. Immunotherapy is a new therapeutical strategy still limited to the palliative setting (recurrent not resectable or metastatic disease). The search for new biomarkers or possible new targetable mechanisms is meaningful especially in the clinical setting of HNSCC. In this thesis a focus will be given on the study of three possible pro-tumoral immune populations studied in HNSCC: the tumor associated neutrophils (TAN), intratumoral B-cells with a immunosuppressive phenotype and the CD8+ T-regs. Biostatistical and bioinformatical techniques are applied to summarize complex information derived from multiparametric clinical and immunological variables and to validate in-situ derived findings through gene expression data of public available datasets. Lastly, the second part of the thesis will take into account relevant clinical research projects, aimed at improving the precision oncology in HNSCC developing survival prediction models, comparing alternative oncological procedures, validating new classifiers or testing the use of novel clinical protocols as the use of immunnutrition

Fully-Automated Packaging Structure Recognition of Standardized Logistics Assets on Images

Agricultural techniques have been improved over the centuries to match with the growing demand of an increase in global population. Farming applications are facing new challenges to satisfy global needs and the recent technology advancements in terms of robotic platforms can be exploited. As the orchard management is one of the most challenging applications because of its tree structure and the required interaction with the environment, it was targeted also by the University of Bologna research group to provide a customized solution addressing new concept for agricultural vehicles. The result of this research has blossomed into a new lightweight tracked vehicle capable of performing autonomous navigation both in the open-filed scenario and while travelling inside orchards for what has been called in-row navigation. The mechanical design concept, together with customized software implementation has been detailed to highlight the strengths of the platform and some further improvements envisioned to improve the overall performances. Static stability testing has proved that the vehicle can withstand steep slopes scenarios. Some improvements have also been investigated to refine the estimation of the slippage that occurs during turning maneuvers and that is typical of skid-steering tracked vehicles. The software architecture has been implemented using the Robot Operating System (ROS) framework, so to exploit community available packages related to common and basic functions, such as sensor interfaces, while allowing dedicated custom implementation of the navigation algorithm developed. Real-world testing inside the university’s experimental orchards have proven the robustness and stability of the solution with more than 800 hours of fieldwork. The vehicle has also enabled a wide range of autonomous tasks such as spraying, mowing, and on-the-field data collection capabilities. The latter can be exploited to automatically estimate relevant orchard properties such as fruit counting and sizing, canopy properties estimation, and autonomous fruit harvesting with post-harvesting estimations.
