Evaluating Model Testing and Model Checking for Finding Requirements Violations in Simulink Models
Matlab/Simulink is a development and simulation language that is widely used
by the Cyber-Physical System (CPS) industry to model dynamical systems. There
are two mainstream approaches to verify CPS Simulink models: model testing that
attempts to identify failures in models by executing them for a number of
sampled test inputs, and model checking that attempts to exhaustively check the
correctness of models against some given formal properties. In this paper, we
present an industrial Simulink model benchmark, provide a categorization of
different model types in the benchmark, describe the recurring logical patterns
in the model requirements, and discuss the results of applying model checking
and model testing approaches to identify requirements violations in the
benchmarked models. Based on the results, we discuss the strengths and
weaknesses of model testing and model checking. Our results further suggest
that model checking and model testing are complementary and by combining them,
we can significantly enhance the capabilities of each of these approaches
individually. We conclude by providing guidelines as to how the two approaches
can be best applied together.Comment: 10 pages + 2 page reference
Towards Symbolic Model-Based Mutation Testing: Combining Reachability and Refinement Checking
Model-based mutation testing uses altered test models to derive test cases
that are able to reveal whether a modelled fault has been implemented. This
requires conformance checking between the original and the mutated model. This
paper presents an approach for symbolic conformance checking of action systems,
which are well-suited to specify reactive systems. We also consider
nondeterminism in our models. Hence, we do not check for equivalence, but for
refinement. We encode the transition relation as well as the conformance
relation as a constraint satisfaction problem and use a constraint solver in
our reachability and refinement checking algorithms. Explicit conformance
checking techniques often face state space explosion. First experimental
evaluations show that our approach has potential to outperform explicit
conformance checkers.Comment: In Proceedings MBT 2012, arXiv:1202.582
Combining Model Checking and Testing
Abstract Model checking and testing have a lot in common. Over the last two decades, significant progress has been made on how to broaden the scope of model checking from finite-state abstractions to actual software implementations. One way to do this consists of adapting model checking into a form of systematic testing that is applicable to industrial-size software. This chapter presents an overview of this strand of software model checking
The 'Test model-checking' approach to the verification of formal memory models of multiprocessors
technical reportWe offer a solution to the problem of verifying formal memory models of processors by combining the strengths of model-checking and a formal testing procedure for parallel machines. We characterize the formal basis for abstracting the tests into test automata and associated memory rule safety properties whose violations pinpoint the ordering rule being violated. Our experimental results on Verilog models of a commercial split transaction bus demonstrates the ability of our method to effectively debug design models during early stages of their development
A Vision for Behavioural Model-Driven Validation of Software Product Lines
International audienceThe Software Product Lines (SPLs) paradigm promises faster development cycles and increased quality by systematically reusing software assets. This paradigm considers a family of systems, each of which can be obtained by a selection of features in a variability model. Though essential, providing Quality Assurance (QA) techniques for SPLs has long been perceived as a very difficult challenge due to the combinatorics induced by variability and for which very few techniques were available. Recently, important progress has been made by the model-checking and testing communities to address this QA challenge, in a very disparate way though. We present our vision for a unified framework combining model-checking and testing approaches applied to behavioural models of SPLs. Our vision relies on Featured Transition Systems (FTSs), an extension of transition systems supporting variability. This vision is also based on model-driven technologies to support practical SPL modelling and orchestrate various QA scenarios. We illustrate such scenarios on a vending machine SPL
COST Action IC 1402 ArVI: Runtime Verification Beyond Monitoring -- Activity Report of Working Group 1
This report presents the activities of the first working group of the COST
Action ArVI, Runtime Verification beyond Monitoring. The report aims to provide
an overview of some of the major core aspects involved in Runtime Verification.
Runtime Verification is the field of research dedicated to the analysis of
system executions. It is often seen as a discipline that studies how a system
run satisfies or violates correctness properties. The report exposes a taxonomy
of Runtime Verification (RV) presenting the terminology involved with the main
concepts of the field. The report also develops the concept of instrumentation,
the various ways to instrument systems, and the fundamental role of
instrumentation in designing an RV framework. We also discuss how RV interplays
with other verification techniques such as model-checking, deductive
verification, model learning, testing, and runtime assertion checking. Finally,
we propose challenges in monitoring quantitative and statistical data beyond
detecting property violation
