Combining interaction and content for feedback-based ranking
The paper is concerned with the design and the evaluation of the combination of user interaction and informative content features for implicit and pseudo feedback-based document re-ranking. The features are observed during the visit of the top-ranked documents returned in response to a query. Experiments on a TREC Web test collection have been carried out and the experimental results are illustrated. We report that the effectiveness of the combination of user interaction for implicit feedback depends on whether document re-ranking is on a single-user or a user-group basis. Moreover, the adoption of document re-ranking on a user-group basis can improve pseudo-relevance feedback by providing more effective document for expanding queries
Individual and Domain Adaptation in Sentence Planning for Dialogue
One of the biggest challenges in the development and deployment of spoken
dialogue systems is the design of the spoken language generation module. This
challenge arises from the need for the generator to adapt to many features of
the dialogue domain, user population, and dialogue context. A promising
approach is trainable generation, which uses general-purpose linguistic
knowledge that is automatically adapted to the features of interest, such as
the application domain, individual user, or user group. In this paper we
present and evaluate a trainable sentence planner for providing restaurant
information in the MATCH dialogue system. We show that trainable sentence
planning can produce complex information presentations whose quality is
comparable to the output of a template-based generator tuned to this domain. We
also show that our method easily supports adapting the sentence planner to
individuals, and that the individualized sentence planners generally perform
better than models trained and tested on a population of individuals. Previous
work has documented and utilized individual preferences for content selection,
but to our knowledge, these results provide the first demonstration of
individual preferences for sentence planning operations, affecting the content
order, discourse structure and sentence structure of system responses. Finally,
we evaluate the contribution of different feature sets, and show that, in our
application, n-gram features often do as well as features based on higher-level
linguistic representations
A survey on the use of relevance feedback for information access systems
Users of online search engines often find it difficult to express their need for information in the form of a query. However, if the user can identify examples of the kind of documents they require then they can employ a technique known as relevance feedback. Relevance feedback covers a range of techniques intended to improve a user's query and facilitate retrieval of information relevant to a user's information need. In this paper we survey relevance feedback techniques. We study both automatic techniques, in which the system modifies the user's query, and interactive techniques, in which the user has control over query modification. We also consider specific interfaces to relevance feedback systems and characteristics of searchers that can affect the use and success of relevance feedback systems
Neural Collaborative Filtering
In recent years, deep neural networks have yielded immense success on speech
recognition, computer vision and natural language processing. However, the
exploration of deep neural networks on recommender systems has received
relatively less scrutiny. In this work, we strive to develop techniques based
on neural networks to tackle the key problem in recommendation -- collaborative
filtering -- on the basis of implicit feedback. Although some recent work has
employed deep learning for recommendation, they primarily used it to model
auxiliary information, such as textual descriptions of items and acoustic
features of musics. When it comes to model the key factor in collaborative
filtering -- the interaction between user and item features, they still
resorted to matrix factorization and applied an inner product on the latent
features of users and items. By replacing the inner product with a neural
architecture that can learn an arbitrary function from data, we present a
general framework named NCF, short for Neural network-based Collaborative
Filtering. NCF is generic and can express and generalize matrix factorization
under its framework. To supercharge NCF modelling with non-linearities, we
propose to leverage a multi-layer perceptron to learn the user-item interaction
function. Extensive experiments on two real-world datasets show significant
improvements of our proposed NCF framework over the state-of-the-art methods.
Empirical evidence shows that using deeper layers of neural networks offers

Combining and selecting characteristics of information use
In this paper we report on a series of experiments designed to investigate the combination of term and document weighting functions in Information Retrieval. We describe a series of weighting functions, each of which is based on how information is used within documents and collections, and use these weighting functions in two types of experiments: one based on combination of evidence for ad-hoc retrieval, the other based on selective combination of evidence within a relevance feedback situation. We discuss the difficulties involved in predicting good combinations of evidence for ad-hoc retrieval, and suggest the factors that may lead to the success or failure of combination. We also demonstrate how, in a relevance feedback situation, the relevance assessments can provide a good indication of how evidence should be selected for query term weighting. The use of relevance information to guide the combination process is shown to reduce the variability inherent in combination of evidence
On Sampling Strategies for Neural Network-based Collaborative Filtering
Recent advances in neural networks have inspired people to design hybrid
recommendation algorithms that can incorporate both (1) user-item interaction
information and (2) content information including image, audio, and text.
Despite their promising results, neural network-based recommendation algorithms
pose extensive computational costs, making it challenging to scale and improve
upon. In this paper, we propose a general neural network-based recommendation
framework, which subsumes several existing state-of-the-art recommendation
algorithms, and address the efficiency issue by investigating sampling
strategies in the stochastic gradient descent training for the framework. We
tackle this issue by first establishing a connection between the loss functions
and the user-item interaction bipartite graph, where the loss function terms
are defined on links while major computation burdens are located at nodes. We
call this type of loss functions "graph-based" loss functions, for which varied
mini-batch sampling strategies can have different computational costs. Based on
the insight, three novel sampling strategies are proposed, which can
significantly improve the training efficiency of the proposed framework (up to
times speedup in our experiments), as well as improving the
recommendation performance. Theoretical analysis is also provided for both the
computational cost and the convergence. We believe the study of sampling
strategies have further implications on general graph-based loss functions, and
would also enable more research under the neural network-based recommendation

Ranking algorithms for implicit feedback
This report presents novel algorithms to use eye movements as an implicit relevance feedback in order to improve the performance of the searches. The algorithms are evaluated on "Transport Rank Five" Dataset which were previously collected in Task 8.3. We demonstrated that simple linear combination or tensor product of eye movement and image features can improve the retrieval accuracy
Deep Learning based Recommender System: A Survey and New Perspectives
With the ever-growing volume of online information, recommender systems have
been an effective strategy to overcome such information overload. The utility
of recommender systems cannot be overstated, given its widespread adoption in
many web applications, along with its potential impact to ameliorate many
problems related to over-choice. In recent years, deep learning has garnered
considerable interest in many research fields such as computer vision and
natural language processing, owing not only to stellar performance but also the
attractive property of learning feature representations from scratch. The
influence of deep learning is also pervasive, recently demonstrating its
effectiveness when applied to information retrieval and recommender systems
research. Evidently, the field of deep learning in recommender system is
flourishing. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of recent
research efforts on deep learning based recommender systems. More concretely,
we provide and devise a taxonomy of deep learning based recommendation models,
along with providing a comprehensive summary of the state-of-the-art. Finally,
we expand on current trends and provide new perspectives pertaining to this new

Exploration of applying a theory-based user classification model to inform personalised content-based image retrieval system design

After developing the user models, it is important to effectively utilise them in the design, development and evaluation of search systems to improve users’ overall search experiences. However there is a lack of research has been done on the utilisation of the user models especially theory-based models, because of the challenges on the utilization methodologies when applying the model to different search systems. This paper explores and states how to apply an Information Foraging Theory (IFT) based user classification model called ISE to effectively identify user’s search characteristics and create user groups, based on an empirically-driven methodology for content-based image retrieval (CBIR) systems and how the preferences of different user types inform the personalized design of the CBIR systems
