    A Review and Analysis of Eye-Gaze Estimation Systems, Algorithms and Performance Evaluation Methods in Consumer Platforms

    In this paper a review is presented of the research on eye gaze estimation techniques and applications, that has progressed in diverse ways over the past two decades. Several generic eye gaze use-cases are identified: desktop, TV, head-mounted, automotive and handheld devices. Analysis of the literature leads to the identification of several platform specific factors that influence gaze tracking accuracy. A key outcome from this review is the realization of a need to develop standardized methodologies for performance evaluation of gaze tracking systems and achieve consistency in their specification and comparative evaluation.     Medical SLAM in an autonomous robotic system

    One of the main challenges for computer-assisted surgery (CAS) is to determine the intra-operative morphology and motion of soft-tissues. This information is prerequisite to the registration of multi-modal patient-specific data for enhancing the surgeon’s navigation capabilities by observing beyond exposed tissue surfaces and for providing intelligent control of robotic-assisted instruments. In minimally invasive surgery (MIS), optical techniques are an increasingly attractive approach for in vivo 3D reconstruction of the soft-tissue surface geometry. This thesis addresses the ambitious goal of achieving surgical autonomy, through the study of the anatomical environment by Initially studying the technology present and what is needed to analyze the scene: vision sensors. A novel endoscope for autonomous surgical task execution is presented in the first part of this thesis. Which combines a standard stereo camera with a depth sensor. This solution introduces several key advantages, such as the possibility of reconstructing the 3D at a greater distance than traditional endoscopes. Then the problem of hand-eye calibration is tackled, which unites the vision system and the robot in a single reference system. Increasing the accuracy in the surgical work plan. In the second part of the thesis the problem of the 3D reconstruction and the algorithms currently in use were addressed. In MIS, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) can be used to localize the pose of the endoscopic camera and build ta 3D model of the tissue surface. Another key element for MIS is to have real-time knowledge of the pose of surgical tools with respect to the surgical camera and underlying anatomy. Starting from the ORB-SLAM algorithm we have modified the architecture to make it usable in an anatomical environment by adding the registration of the pre-operative information of the intervention to the map obtained from the SLAM. Once it has been proven that the slam algorithm is usable in an anatomical environment, it has been improved by adding semantic segmentation to be able to distinguish dynamic features from static ones. All the results in this thesis are validated on training setups, which mimics some of the challenges of real surgery and on setups that simulate the human body within Autonomous Robotic Surgery (ARS) and Smart Autonomous Robotic Assistant Surgeon (SARAS) projects

    One of the main challenges in robotics is to develop accurate localization methods that achieve acceptable runtime performances.One of the most common approaches is to use Global Navigation Satellite System such as GPS to localize robots.However, satellite signals are not full-time available in some kind of environments.The purpose of this dissertation is to develop a localization system for a ground robot.This robot is inserted in a project called RoMoVi and is intended to perform tasks like crop monitoring and harvesting in steep slope vineyards.This vineyards are localized in the Douro region which are characterized by the presence of high hills.Thus, the context of RoMoVi is not prosperous for the use of GPS-based localization systems.Therefore, the main goal of this work is to create a reliable localization system based on vision techniques and low cost sensors.To do so, a Visual Odometry system will be used.The concept of Visual Odometry is equivalent to wheel odometry but it has the advantage of not suffering from wheel slip which is present in these kind of environments due to the harsh terrain conditions.Here, motion is tracked computing the homogeneous transformation between camera frames, incrementally.However, this approach also presents some open issues.Most of the state of art methods, specially those who present a monocular camera system, don't perform good motion estimations in pure rotations.In some of them, motion even degenerates in these situations.Also, computing the motion scale is a difficult task that is widely investigated in this field.This work is intended to solve these issues.To do so, fisheye lens cameras will be used in order to achieve wide vision field of views

    Vision-Based navigation system for unmanned aerial vehicles

    Mención Internacional en el título de doctorThe main objective of this dissertation is to provide Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with a robust navigation system; in order to allow the UAVs to perform complex tasks autonomously and in real-time. The proposed algorithms deal with solving the navigation problem for outdoor as well as indoor environments, mainly based on visual information that is captured by monocular cameras. In addition, this dissertation presents the advantages of using the visual sensors as the main source of data, or complementing other sensors in providing useful information; in order to improve the accuracy and the robustness of the sensing purposes. The dissertation mainly covers several research topics based on computer vision techniques: (I) Pose Estimation, to provide a solution for estimating the 6D pose of the UAV. This algorithm is based on the combination of SIFT detector and FREAK descriptor; which maintains the performance of the feature points matching and decreases the computational time. Thereafter, the pose estimation problem is solved based on the decomposition of the world-to-frame and frame-to-frame homographies. (II) Obstacle Detection and Collision Avoidance, in which, the UAV is able to sense and detect the frontal obstacles that are situated in its path. The detection algorithm mimics the human behaviors for detecting the approaching obstacles; by analyzing the size changes of the detected feature points, combined with the expansion ratios of the convex hull constructed around the detected feature points from consecutive frames. Then, by comparing the area ratio of the obstacle and the position of the UAV, the method decides if the detected obstacle may cause a collision. Finally, the algorithm extracts the collision-free zones around the obstacle, and combining with the tracked waypoints, the UAV performs the avoidance maneuver. (III) Navigation Guidance, which generates the waypoints to determine the flight path based on environment and the situated obstacles. Then provide a strategy to follow the path segments and in an efficient way and perform the flight maneuver smoothly. (IV) Visual Servoing, to offer different control solutions (Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) and PID), based on the obtained visual information; in order to achieve the flight stability as well as to perform the correct maneuver; to avoid the possible collisions and track the waypoints. All the proposed algorithms have been verified with real flights in both indoor and outdoor environments, taking into consideration the visual conditions; such as illumination and textures. The obtained results have been validated against other systems; such as VICON motion capture system, DGPS in the case of pose estimate algorithm. In addition, the proposed algorithms have been compared with several previous works in the state of the art, and are results proves the improvement in the accuracy and the robustness of the proposed algorithms. Finally, this dissertation concludes that the visual sensors have the advantages of lightweight and low consumption and provide reliable information, which is considered as a powerful tool in the navigation systems to increase the autonomy of the UAVs for real-world applications.El objetivo principal de esta tesis es proporcionar Vehiculos Aereos no Tripulados (UAVs) con un sistema de navegacion robusto, para permitir a los UAVs realizar tareas complejas de forma autonoma y en tiempo real. Los algoritmos propuestos tratan de resolver problemas de la navegacion tanto en ambientes interiores como al aire libre basandose principalmente en la informacion visual captada por las camaras monoculares. Ademas, esta tesis doctoral presenta la ventaja de usar sensores visuales bien como fuente principal de datos o complementando a otros sensores en el suministro de informacion util, con el fin de mejorar la precision y la robustez de los procesos de deteccion. La tesis cubre, principalmente, varios temas de investigacion basados en tecnicas de vision por computador: (I) Estimacion de la Posicion y la Orientacion (Pose), para proporcionar una solucion a la estimacion de la posicion y orientacion en 6D del UAV. Este algoritmo se basa en la combinacion del detector SIFT y el descriptor FREAK, que mantiene el desempeno del a funcion de puntos de coincidencia y disminuye el tiempo computacional. De esta manera, se soluciona el problema de la estimacion de la posicion basandose en la descomposicion de las homografias mundo a imagen e imagen a imagen. (II) Deteccion obstaculos y elusion colisiones, donde el UAV es capaz de percibir y detectar los obstaculos frontales que se encuentran en su camino. El algoritmo de deteccion imita comportamientos humanos para detectar los obstaculos que se acercan, mediante el analisis de la magnitud del cambio de los puntos caracteristicos detectados de referencia, combinado con los ratios de expansion de los contornos convexos construidos alrededor de los puntos caracteristicos detectados en frames consecutivos. A continuacion, comparando la proporcion del area del obstaculo y la posicion del UAV, el metodo decide si el obstaculo detectado puede provocar una colision. Por ultimo, el algoritmo extrae las zonas libres de colision alrededor del obstaculo y combinandolo con los puntos de referencia, elUAV realiza la maniobra de evasion. (III) Guiado de navegacion, que genera los puntos de referencia para determinar la trayectoria de vuelo basada en el entorno y en los obstaculos detectados que encuentra. Proporciona una estrategia para seguir los segmentos del trazado de una manera eficiente y realizar la maniobra de vuelo con suavidad. (IV) Guiado por Vision, para ofrecer soluciones de control diferentes (Control de Logica Fuzzy (FLC) y PID), basados en la informacion visual obtenida con el fin de lograr la estabilidad de vuelo, asi como realizar la maniobra correcta para evitar posibles colisiones y seguir los puntos de referencia. Todos los algoritmos propuestos han sido verificados con vuelos reales en ambientes exteriores e interiores, tomando en consideracion condiciones visuales como la iluminacion y las texturas. Los resultados obtenidos han sido validados con otros sistemas: como el sistema de captura de movimiento VICON y DGPS en el caso del algoritmo de estimacion de la posicion y orientacion. Ademas, los algoritmos propuestos han sido comparados con trabajos anteriores recogidos en el estado del arte con resultados que demuestran una mejora de la precision y la robustez de los algoritmos propuestos.     A Collaborative Visual Localization Scheme for a Low-Cost Heterogeneous Robotic Team with Non-Overlapping Perspectives

    This paper presents and evaluates a relative localization scheme for a heterogeneous team of low-cost mobile robots. An error-state, complementary Kalman Filter was developed to fuse analytically-derived uncertainty of stereoscopic pose measurements of an aerial robot, made by a ground robot, with the inertial/visual proprioceptive measurements of both robots. Results show that the sources of error, image quantization, asynchronous sensors, and a non-stationary bias, were sufficiently modeled to estimate the pose of the aerial robot. In both simulation and experiments, we demonstrate the proposed methodology with a heterogeneous robot team, consisting of a UAV and a UGV tasked with collaboratively localizing themselves while avoiding obstacles in an unknown environment. The team is able to identify a goal location and obstacles in the environment and plan a path for the UGV to the goal location. The results demonstrate localization accuracies of 2cm to 4cm, on average, while the robots operate at a distance from each-other between 1m and 4m

    Sensor fusion in driving assistance systems

    Mención Internacional en el título de doctorLa vida diaria en los países desarrollados y en vías de desarrollo depende en gran medida del transporte urbano y en carretera. Esta actividad supone un coste importante para sus usuarios activos y pasivos en términos de polución y accidentes, muy habitualmente debidos al factor humano. Los nuevos desarrollos en seguridad y asistencia a la conducción, llamados Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS), buscan mejorar la seguridad en el transporte, y a medio plazo, llegar a la conducción autónoma. Los ADAS, al igual que la conducción humana, están basados en sensores que proporcionan información acerca del entorno, y la fiabilidad de los sensores es crucial para las aplicaciones ADAS al igual que las capacidades sensoriales lo son para la conducción humana. Una de las formas de aumentar la fiabilidad de los sensores es el uso de la Fusión Sensorial, desarrollando nuevas estrategias para el modelado del entorno de conducción gracias al uso de diversos sensores, y obteniendo una información mejorada a partid de los datos disponibles. La presente tesis pretende ofrecer una solución novedosa para la detección y clasificación de obstáculos en aplicaciones de automoción, usando fusión vii sensorial con dos sensores ampliamente disponibles en el mercado: la cámara de espectro visible y el escáner láser. Cámaras y láseres son sensores comúnmente usados en la literatura científica, cada vez más accesibles y listos para ser empleados en aplicaciones reales. La solución propuesta permite la detección y clasificación de algunos de los obstáculos comúnmente presentes en la vía, como son ciclistas y peatones. En esta tesis se han explorado novedosos enfoques para la detección y clasificación, desde la clasificación empleando clusters de nubes de puntos obtenidas desde el escáner láser, hasta las técnicas de domain adaptation para la creación de bases de datos de imágenes sintéticas, pasando por la extracción inteligente de clusters y la detección y eliminación del suelo en nubes de puntos.Life in developed and developing countries is highly dependent on road and urban motor transport. This activity involves a high cost for its active and passive users in terms of pollution and accidents, which are largely attributable to the human factor. New developments in safety and driving assistance, called Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS), are intended to improve security in transportation, and, in the mid-term, lead to autonomous driving. ADAS, like the human driving, are based on sensors, which provide information about the environment, and sensors’ reliability is crucial for ADAS applications in the same way the sensing abilities are crucial for human driving. One of the ways to improve reliability for sensors is the use of Sensor Fusion, developing novel strategies for environment modeling with the help of several sensors and obtaining an enhanced information from the combination of the available data. The present thesis is intended to offer a novel solution for obstacle detection and classification in automotive applications using sensor fusion with two highly available sensors in the market: visible spectrum camera and laser scanner. Cameras and lasers are commonly used sensors in the scientific literature, increasingly affordable and ready to be deployed in real world applications. The solution proposed provides obstacle detection and classification for some obstacles commonly present in the road, such as pedestrians and bicycles.     Runtime resource management for vision-based applications in mobile robots

    Computer-vision (CV) applications are an important part of mobile robot automation, analyzing the perceived raw data from vision sensors and providing a rich amount of information on the surrounding environment. The design of a high-speed and energy-efficient CV application for a resource-constrained mobile robot, while maintaining a certain targeted level of accuracy in computation, is a challenging task. This is because such applications demand a lot of resources, e.g. computing capacity and battery energy, to run seamlessly in real time. Moreover, there is always a trade-off between accuracy, performance and energy consumption, as these factors dynamically affect each other at runtime. In this thesis, we investigate novel runtime resource management approaches to improve performance and energy efficiency of vision-based applications in mobile robots. Due to the dynamic correlation between different management objectives, such as energy consumption and execution time, both environmental and computational observations need to be dynamically updated, and the actuators are manipulated at runtime based on these observations. Algorithmic and computational parameters of a CV application (output accuracy and CPU voltage/frequency) are adjusted by measuring the key factors associated with the intensity of computations and strain on CPUs (environmental complexity and instantaneous power). Furthermore, we show how mechanical characteristics of the robot, i.e. the speed of movement in this thesis, can affect the computational behaviour. Based on this investigation, we add the speed of a robot, as an actuator, to our resource management algorithm besides the considered computational knobs (output accuracy and CPU voltage/frequency). To evaluate the proposed approach, we perform several experiments on an unmanned ground vehicle equipped with an embedded computer board and use RGB and event cameras as the vision sensors for CV applications. The obtained results show that the presented management strategy improves the performance and accuracy of vision-based applications while significantly reducing the energy consumption compared with the state-of-the-art solutions. Moreover, we demonstrate that considering simultaneously both computational and mechanical aspects in management of CV applications running on mobile robots significantly reduces the energy consumption compared with similar methods that consider these two aspects separately, oblivious to each other’s outcome
