Combining Finite Element Method and L-Systems Using Natural Information Flow Propagation to Simulate Growing Dynamical Systems
International audienceThis paper shows how to solve a system of di↵erential equa-tions controlling the development of a dynamical system based on finite element method and L-Systems. Our methods leads to solve a linear system of equations by propagating the flow of information throughout the structure of the developing system in a natural way. The method is illustrated on the growth of a branching system whose axes bend under their own weight
The SLH framework for modeling quantum input-output networks
Many emerging quantum technologies demand precise engineering and control
over networks consisting of quantum mechanical degrees of freedom connected by
propagating electromagnetic fields, or quantum input-output networks. Here we
review recent progress in theory and experiment related to such quantum
input-output networks, with a focus on the SLH framework, a powerful modeling
framework for networked quantum systems that is naturally endowed with
properties such as modularity and hierarchy. We begin by explaining the
physical approximations required to represent any individual node of a network,
eg. atoms in cavity or a mechanical oscillator, and its coupling to quantum
fields by an operator triple . Then we explain how these nodes can be
composed into a network with arbitrary connectivity, including coherent
feedback channels, using algebraic rules, and how to derive the dynamics of
network components and output fields. The second part of the review discusses
several extensions to the basic SLH framework that expand its modeling
capabilities, and the prospects for modeling integrated implementations of
quantum input-output networks. In addition to summarizing major results and
recent literature, we discuss the potential applications and limitations of the
SLH framework and quantum input-output networks, with the intention of

A Survey of Ocean Simulation and Rendering Techniques in Computer Graphics
This paper presents a survey of ocean simulation and rendering methods in
computer graphics. To model and animate the ocean's surface, these methods
mainly rely on two main approaches: on the one hand, those which approximate
ocean dynamics with parametric, spectral or hybrid models and use empirical
laws from oceanographic research. We will see that this type of methods
essentially allows the simulation of ocean scenes in the deep water domain,
without breaking waves. On the other hand, physically-based methods use
Navier-Stokes Equations (NSE) to represent breaking waves and more generally
ocean surface near the shore. We also describe ocean rendering methods in
computer graphics, with a special interest in the simulation of phenomena such
as foam and spray, and light's interaction with the ocean surface
Characteristic Evolution and Matching
I review the development of numerical evolution codes for general relativity
based upon the characteristic initial value problem. Progress in characteristic
evolution is traced from the early stage of 1D feasibility studies to 2D
axisymmetric codes that accurately simulate the oscillations and gravitational
collapse of relativistic stars and to current 3D codes that provide pieces of a
binary black hole spacetime. Cauchy codes have now been successful at
simulating all aspects of the binary black hole problem inside an artificially
constructed outer boundary. A prime application of characteristic evolution is
to extend such simulations to null infinity where the waveform from the binary
inspiral and merger can be unambiguously computed. This has now been
accomplished by Cauchy-characteristic extraction, where data for the
characteristic evolution is supplied by Cauchy data on an extraction worldtube
inside the artificial outer boundary. The ultimate application of
characteristic evolution is to eliminate the role of this outer boundary by
constructing a global solution via Cauchy-characteristic matching. Progress in

Numerical simulation of conservation laws with moving grid nodes: Application to tsunami wave modelling
In the present article we describe a few simple and efficient finite volume
type schemes on moving grids in one spatial dimension combined with appropriate
predictor-corrector method to achieve higher resolution. The underlying finite
volume scheme is conservative and it is accurate up to the second order in
space. The main novelty consists in the motion of the grid. This new dynamic
aspect can be used to resolve better the areas with large solution gradients or
any other special features. No interpolation procedure is employed, thus
unnecessary solution smearing is avoided, and therefore, our method enjoys
excellent conservation properties. The resulting grid is completely
redistributed according the choice of the so-called monitor function. Several
more or less universal choices of the monitor function are provided. Finally,
the performance of the proposed algorithm is illustrated on several examples
stemming from the simple linear advection to the simulation of complex shallow
water waves. The exact well-balanced property is proven. We believe that the
techniques described in our paper can be beneficially used to model tsunami
