Cascaded 3D Full-body Pose Regression from Single Depth Image at 100 FPS
There are increasing real-time live applications in virtual reality, where it
plays an important role in capturing and retargetting 3D human pose. But it is
still challenging to estimate accurate 3D pose from consumer imaging devices
such as depth camera. This paper presents a novel cascaded 3D full-body pose
regression method to estimate accurate pose from a single depth image at 100
fps. The key idea is to train cascaded regressors based on Gradient Boosting
algorithm from pre-recorded human motion capture database. By incorporating
hierarchical kinematics model of human pose into the learning procedure, we can
directly estimate accurate 3D joint angles instead of joint positions. The
biggest advantage of this model is that the bone length can be preserved during
the whole 3D pose estimation procedure, which leads to more effective features
and higher pose estimation accuracy. Our method can be used as an
initialization procedure when combining with tracking methods. We demonstrate
the power of our method on a wide range of synthesized human motion data from
CMU mocap database, Human3.6M dataset and real human movements data captured in
real time. In our comparison against previous 3D pose estimation methods and
commercial system such as Kinect 2017, we achieve the state-of-the-art
accuracy
No Spare Parts: Sharing Part Detectors for Image Categorization
This work aims for image categorization using a representation of distinctive
parts. Different from existing part-based work, we argue that parts are
naturally shared between image categories and should be modeled as such. We
motivate our approach with a quantitative and qualitative analysis by
backtracking where selected parts come from. Our analysis shows that in
addition to the category parts defining the class, the parts coming from the
background context and parts from other image categories improve categorization
performance. Part selection should not be done separately for each category,
but instead be shared and optimized over all categories. To incorporate part
sharing between categories, we present an algorithm based on AdaBoost to
jointly optimize part sharing and selection, as well as fusion with the global
image representation. We achieve results competitive to the state-of-the-art on
object, scene, and action categories, further improving over deep convolutional
neural networks
Learning to Rank Academic Experts in the DBLP Dataset
Expert finding is an information retrieval task that is concerned with the
search for the most knowledgeable people with respect to a specific topic, and
the search is based on documents that describe people's activities. The task
involves taking a user query as input and returning a list of people who are
sorted by their level of expertise with respect to the user query. Despite
recent interest in the area, the current state-of-the-art techniques lack in
principled approaches for optimally combining different sources of evidence.
This article proposes two frameworks for combining multiple estimators of
expertise. These estimators are derived from textual contents, from
graph-structure of the citation patterns for the community of experts, and from
profile information about the experts. More specifically, this article explores
the use of supervised learning to rank methods, as well as rank aggregation
approaches, for combing all of the estimators of expertise. Several supervised
learning algorithms, which are representative of the pointwise, pairwise and
listwise approaches, were tested, and various state-of-the-art data fusion
techniques were also explored for the rank aggregation framework. Experiments
that were performed on a dataset of academic publications from the Computer

Predicting Genetic Regulatory Response Using Classification
We present a novel classification-based method for learning to predict gene
regulatory response. Our approach is motivated by the hypothesis that in simple
organisms such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, we can learn a decision rule for
predicting whether a gene is up- or down-regulated in a particular experiment
based on (1) the presence of binding site subsequences (``motifs'') in the
gene's regulatory region and (2) the expression levels of regulators such as
transcription factors in the experiment (``parents''). Thus our learning task
integrates two qualitatively different data sources: genome-wide cDNA
microarray data across multiple perturbation and mutant experiments along with
motif profile data from regulatory sequences. We convert the regression task of
predicting real-valued gene expression measurement to a classification task of
predicting +1 and -1 labels, corresponding to up- and down-regulation beyond
the levels of biological and measurement noise in microarray measurements. The
learning algorithm employed is boosting with a margin-based generalization of
decision trees, alternating decision trees. This large-margin classifier is
sufficiently flexible to allow complex logical functions, yet sufficiently
simple to give insight into the combinatorial mechanisms of gene regulation. We
observe encouraging prediction accuracy on experiments based on the Gasch S.
cerevisiae dataset, and we show that we can accurately predict up- and
down-regulation on held-out experiments. Our method thus provides predictive
hypotheses, suggests biological experiments, and provides interpretable insight

Detecting word substitutions in text
Searching for words on a watchlist is one way in which large-scale surveillance of communication can be done, for example in intelligence and counterterrorism settings. One obvious defense is to replace words that might attract attention to a message with other, more innocuous, words. For example, the sentence the attack will be tomorrow" might be altered to the complex will be tomorrow", since 'complex' is a word whose frequency is close to that of 'attack'. Such substitutions are readily detectable by humans since they do not make sense. We address the problem of detecting such substitutions automatically, by looking for discrepancies between words and their contexts, and using only syntactic information. We define a set of measures, each of which is quite weak, but which together produce per-sentence detection rates around 90% with false positive rates around 10%. Rules for combining persentence detection into per-message detection can reduce the false positive and false negative rates for messages to practical levels. We test the approach using sentences from the Enron email and Brown corpora, representing informal and formal text respectively
Classifiers for centrality determination in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions
Centrality, as a geometrical property of the collision, is crucial for the
physical interpretation of nucleus-nucleus and proton-nucleus experimental
data. However, it cannot be directly accessed in event-by-event data analysis.
Common methods for centrality estimation in A-A and p-A collisions usually rely
on a single detector (either on the signal in zero-degree calorimeters or on
the multiplicity in some semi-central rapidity range). In the present work, we
made an attempt to develop an approach for centrality determination that is
based on machine-learning techniques and utilizes information from several
detector subsystems simultaneously. Different event classifiers are suggested
and evaluated for their selectivity power in terms of the number of
nucleons-participants and the impact parameter of the collision. Finer
centrality resolution may allow to reduce impact from so-called volume
fluctuations on physical observables being studied in heavy-ion experiments

Supervised Classification: Quite a Brief Overview
The original problem of supervised classification considers the task of
automatically assigning objects to their respective classes on the basis of
numerical measurements derived from these objects. Classifiers are the tools
that implement the actual functional mapping from these measurements---also
called features or inputs---to the so-called class label---or output. The
fields of pattern recognition and machine learning study ways of constructing
such classifiers. The main idea behind supervised methods is that of learning
from examples: given a number of example input-output relations, to what extent
can the general mapping be learned that takes any new and unseen feature vector
to its correct class? This chapter provides a basic introduction to the
underlying ideas of how to come to a supervised classification problem. In
addition, it provides an overview of some specific classification techniques,
delves into the issues of object representation and classifier evaluation, and
(very) briefly covers some variations on the basic supervised classification
task that may also be of interest to the practitioner
