SPLODE: Semi-Probabilistic Point and Line Odometry with Depth Estimation from RGB-D Camera Motion
Active depth cameras suffer from several limitations, which cause incomplete
and noisy depth maps, and may consequently affect the performance of RGB-D
Odometry. To address this issue, this paper presents a visual odometry method
based on point and line features that leverages both measurements from a depth
sensor and depth estimates from camera motion. Depth estimates are generated
continuously by a probabilistic depth estimation framework for both types of
features to compensate for the lack of depth measurements and inaccurate
feature depth associations. The framework models explicitly the uncertainty of
triangulating depth from both point and line observations to validate and
obtain precise estimates. Furthermore, depth measurements are exploited by
propagating them through a depth map registration module and using a
frame-to-frame motion estimation method that considers 3D-to-2D and 2D-to-3D
reprojection errors, independently. Results on RGB-D sequences captured on
large indoor and outdoor scenes, where depth sensor limitations are critical,
show that the combination of depth measurements and estimates through our
approach is able to overcome the absence and inaccuracy of depth measurements.Comment: IROS 201
LDSO: Direct Sparse Odometry with Loop Closure
In this paper we present an extension of Direct Sparse Odometry (DSO) to a
monocular visual SLAM system with loop closure detection and pose-graph
optimization (LDSO). As a direct technique, DSO can utilize any image pixel
with sufficient intensity gradient, which makes it robust even in featureless
areas. LDSO retains this robustness, while at the same time ensuring
repeatability of some of these points by favoring corner features in the
tracking frontend. This repeatability allows to reliably detect loop closure
candidates with a conventional feature-based bag-of-words (BoW) approach. Loop
closure candidates are verified geometrically and Sim(3) relative pose
constraints are estimated by jointly minimizing 2D and 3D geometric error
terms. These constraints are fused with a co-visibility graph of relative poses
extracted from DSO's sliding window optimization. Our evaluation on publicly
available datasets demonstrates that the modified point selection strategy
retains the tracking accuracy and robustness, and the integrated pose-graph
optimization significantly reduces the accumulated rotation-, translation- and
scale-drift, resulting in an overall performance comparable to state-of-the-art
feature-based systems, even without global bundle adjustment
Visual SLAM for flying vehicles
The ability to learn a map of the environment is important for numerous types of robotic vehicles. In this paper, we address the problem of learning a visual map of the ground using flying vehicles. We assume that the vehicles are equipped with one or two low-cost downlooking cameras in combination with an attitude sensor. Our approach is able to construct a visual map that can later on be used for navigation. Key advantages of our approach are that it is comparably easy to implement, can robustly deal with noisy camera images, and can operate either with a monocular camera or a stereo camera system. Our technique uses visual features and estimates the correspondences between features using a variant of the progressive sample consensus (PROSAC) algorithm. This allows our approach to extract spatial constraints between camera poses that can then be used to address the simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) problem by applying graph methods. Furthermore, we address the problem of efficiently identifying loop closures. We performed several experiments with flying vehicles that demonstrate that our method is able to construct maps of large outdoor and indoor environments. © 2008 IEEE
Learning and Searching Methods for Robust, Real-Time Visual Odometry.
Accurate position estimation provides a critical foundation for mobile robot perception and control. While well-studied, it remains difficult to provide timely, precise, and robust position estimates for applications that operate in uncontrolled environments, such as robotic exploration and autonomous driving. Continuous, high-rate egomotion estimation is possible using cameras and Visual Odometry (VO), which tracks the movement of sparse scene content known as image keypoints or features. However, high update rates, often 30~Hz or greater, leave little computation time per frame, while variability in scene content stresses robustness. Due to these challenges, implementing an accurate and robust visual odometry system remains difficult.
This thesis investigates fundamental improvements throughout all stages of a visual odometry system, and has three primary contributions: The first contribution is a machine learning method for feature detector design. This method considers end-to-end motion estimation accuracy during learning. Consequently, accuracy and robustness are improved across multiple challenging datasets in comparison to state of the art alternatives. The second contribution is a proposed feature descriptor, TailoredBRIEF, that builds upon recent advances in the field in fast, low-memory descriptor extraction and matching. TailoredBRIEF is an in-situ descriptor learning method that improves feature matching accuracy by efficiently customizing descriptor structures on a per-feature basis. Further, a common asymmetry in vision system design between reference and query images is described and exploited, enabling approaches that would otherwise exceed runtime constraints. The final contribution is a new algorithm for visual motion estimation: Perspective Alignment Search~(PAS). Many vision systems depend on the unique appearance of features during matching, despite a large quantity of non-unique features in otherwise barren environments. A search-based method, PAS, is proposed to employ features that lack unique appearance through descriptorless matching. This method simplifies visual odometry pipelines, defining one method that subsumes feature matching, outlier rejection, and motion estimation.
Throughout this work, evaluations of the proposed methods and systems are carried out on ground-truth datasets, often generated with custom experimental platforms in challenging environments. Precise pose estimation of the NASA Mars 2020 Perseverance rover through a stereo-vision-based approach
Visual Odometry (VO) is a fundamental technique to enhance the navigation capabilities of planetary exploration rovers. By processing the images acquired during the motion, VO methods provide estimates of the relative position and attitude between navigation steps with the detection and tracking of two-dimensional (2D) image keypoints. This method allows one to mitigate trajectory inconsistencies associated with slippage conditions resulting from dead-reckoning techniques. We present here an independent analysis of the high-resolution stereo images of the NASA Mars 2020 Perseverance rover to retrieve its accurate localization on sols 65, 66, 72, and 120. The stereo pairs are processed by using a 3D-to-3D stereo-VO approach that is based on consolidated techniques and accounts for the main nonlinear optical effects characterizing real cameras. The algorithm is first validated through the analysis of rectified stereo images acquired by the NASA Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity, and then applied to the determination of Perseverance's path. The results suggest that our reconstructed path is consistent with the telemetered trajectory, which was directly retrieved onboard the rover's system. The estimated pose is in full agreement with the archived rover's position and attitude after short navigation steps. Significant differences (~10â30 cm) between our reconstructed and telemetered trajectories are observed when Perseverance traveled distances larger than 1 m between the acquisition of stereo pairs

Hâ LIDAR odometry for spacecraft relative navigation
Current light detection and ranging (LIDAR) based odometry solutions that are used for spacecraft relative navigation suffer from quite a few deficiencies. These include an off-line training requirement and relying on the iterative closest point (ICP) that does not guarantee a globally optimum solution. To encounter this, the authors suggest a robust architecture that overcomes the problems of current proposals by combining the concepts of 3D local feature matching with an adaptive variant of the Hâ recursive filtering process. Trials on real laser scans of an EnviSat model demonstrate that the proposed architecture affords at least one order of magnitude better accuracy compared to ICP
