    Moving Target Defense for Securing SCADA Communications

    In this paper, we introduce a framework for building a secure and private peer to peer communication used in supervisory control and data acquisition networks with a novel Mobile IPv6-based moving target defense strategy. Our approach aids in combating remote cyber-attacks against peer hosts by thwarting any potential attacks at their reconnaissance stage. The IP address of each host is randomly changed at a certain interval creating a moving target to make it difficult for an attacker to find the host. At the same time, the peer host is updated through the use of the binding update procedure (standard Mobile IPv6 protocol). Compared with existing results that can incur significant packet-loss during address rotations, the proposed solution is loss-less. Improving privacy and anonymity for communicating hosts by removing permanent IP addresses from all packets is also one of the major contributions of this paper. Another contribution is preventing black hole attacks and bandwidth depletion DDoS attacks through the use of extra paths between the peer hosts. Recovering the communication after rebooting a host is also a new contribution of this paper. Lab-based simulation results are presented to demonstrate the performance of the method in action, including its overheads. The testbed experiments show zero packet-loss rate during handoff delay

With the rise in mobile systems, platform security is becoming a major concern across the mobile world, with rising incidence of compromising Android devices.     SDN-Based Network Intrusion Detection as DDoS defense system for Virtualization Environment

    Nowadays, DDoS attacks are often aimed at cloud computing environments, as more people use virtualization servers. With so many Nodes and distributed services, it will be challenging to rely solely on conventional networks to control and monitor intrusions. We design and deploy DDoS attack defense systems in virtualization environments based on Software-defined Networking (SDN) by combining signature-based Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) and sampled flow (sFlow). These techniques are practically tested and evaluated on the Proxmox production Virtualization Environment testbed, adding High Availability capabilities to the Controller. The evaluation results show that it promptly detects several types of DDoS attacks and mitigates their negative impact on network performance. Moreover, it also shows good results on Quality of Service (QoS) parameters such as average packet loss about 0 %, average latency about 0.8 ms, and average bitrate about 860 Mbit/s

    ANALYSIS OF BOTNET CLASSIFICATION AND DETECTION BASED ON C&C CHANNEL

    Botnet is a serious threat to cyber-security. Botnet is a robot that can enter the computer and perform DDoS attacks through attacker’s command. Botnets are designed to extract confidential information from network channels such as LAN, Peer or Internet. They perform on hacker's intention through Command & Control(C&C) where attacker can control the whole network and can clinch illegal activities such as identity theft, unauthorized logins and money transactions. Thus, for security reason, it is very important to understand botnet behavior and go through its countermeasures. This thesis draws together the main ideas of network anomaly, botnet behavior, taxonomy of botnet, famous botnet attacks and detections processes. Based on network protocols, botnets are mainly 3 types: IRC, HTTP, and P2P botnet. All 3 botnet's behavior, vulnerability, and detection processes with examples are explained individually in upcoming chapters. Meanwhile saying shortly, IRC Botnet refers to early botnets targeting chat and messaging applications, HTTP Botnet targets internet browsing/domains and P2P Botnet targets peer network i.e. decentralized servers. Each Botnet's design, target, infecting and spreading mechanism can be different from each other. For an instance, IRC Botnet is targeted for small environment attacks where HTTP and P2P are for huge network traffic. Furthermore, detection techniques and algorithms filtration processes are also different among each of them. Based on these individual botnet's behavior, many research papers have analyzed numerous botnet detection techniques such as graph-based structure, clustering algorithm and so on. Thus, this thesis also analyzes popular detection mechanisms, C&C channels, Botnet working patterns, recorded datasets, results and false positive rates of bots prominently found in IRC, HTTP and P2P. Research area covers C&C channels, botnet behavior, domain browsing, IRC, algorithms, intrusion and detection, network and peer, security and test results.     A Survey on Enterprise Network Security: Asset Behavioral Monitoring and Distributed Attack Detection

    Enterprise networks that host valuable assets and services are popular and frequent targets of distributed network attacks. In order to cope with the ever-increasing threats, industrial and research communities develop systems and methods to monitor the behaviors of their assets and protect them from critical attacks. In this paper, we systematically survey related research articles and industrial systems to highlight the current status of this arms race in enterprise network security. First, we discuss the taxonomy of distributed network attacks on enterprise assets, including distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) and reconnaissance attacks. Second, we review existing methods in monitoring and classifying network behavior of enterprise hosts to verify their benign activities and isolate potential anomalies. Third, state-of-the-art detection methods for distributed network attacks sourced from external attackers are elaborated, highlighting their merits and bottlenecks. Fourth, as programmable networks and machine learning (ML) techniques are increasingly becoming adopted by the community, their current applications in network security are discussed.
