    Checking the irreversible process of clean-up is a delicate task that requires a work of synthesis between theoretical knowledge and practical experience, to define an effective operating protocol on a limited patch area to be extended later to the entire artefact's surface. In this paper, we present a new, quick, semi-automated 3D photogrammetry-based solution to support restorers in the open-air bronze artwork cleaning from corrosion and weathering decay. The solution allows the conservators to assess in real time and with a high level of fidelity in colour and shape, the 'surfaces' to be cleaned before, during and after the clear-out treatment. The solution besides allows an effective and valuable support tool for restorers to identify the original layer of the bronze surface, developed and validated during the ongoing restoration of the Neptune Fountain in Bologna

    Implementing non-photorealistic rendreing enhancements with real-time performance

    We describe quality and performance enhancements, which work in real-time, to all well-known Non-photorealistic (NPR) rendering styles for use in an interactive context. These include Comic rendering, Sketch rendering, Hatching and Painterly rendering, but we also attempt and justify a widening of the established definition of what is considered NPR. In the individual Chapters, we identify typical stylistic elements of the different NPR styles. We list problems that need to be solved in order to implement the various renderers. Standard solutions available in the literature are introduced and in all cases extended and optimised. In particular, we extend the lighting model of the comic renderer to include a specular component and introduce multiple inter-related but independent geometric approximations which greatly improve rendering performance. We implement two completely different solutions to random perturbation sketching, solve temporal coherence issues for coal sketching and find an unexpected use for 3D textures to implement hatch-shading. Textured brushes of painterly rendering are extended by properties such as stroke-direction and texture, motion, paint capacity, opacity and emission, making them more flexible and versatile. Brushes are also provided with a minimal amount of intelligence, so that they can help in maximising screen coverage of brushes. We furthermore devise a completely new NPR style, which we call super-realistic and show how sample images can be tweened in real-time to produce an image-based six degree-of-freedom renderer performing at roughly 450 frames per second. Performance values for our other renderers all lie between 10 and over 400 frames per second on homePC hardware, justifying our real-time claim. A large number of sample screen-shots, illustrations and animations demonstrate the visual fidelity of our rendered images.     Developing a home monitoring system for patients with chronic liver disease using a smartphone

    Liver disease is a growing problem in the UK, and one of the major causes of working-age premature death. Patients with advanced liver disease are typically admitted to hospital on multiple occasions, where they are stabilised before discharge. At home, there is little or no monitoring of their condition available, making it difficult to time additional treatment. Here, a system for non-invasive assessment of serum bilirubin level is proposed, based on imaging the white of the eye (sclera) using a smartphone. Elevated bilirubin level manifests as jaundice, and is a key indicator of overall liver function. Smartphone imaging makes the system low cost, portable and non-contact. An ambient subtraction technique based on subtracting data from flash/ no-flash image pairs is leveraged to account for variations in ambient light. The subtracted signal to noise ratio (SSNR) metric has been developed to ensure good image quality. Values falling below the experimentally-determined threshold of 3.4 trigger a warning to re-capture. To produce device-independent results, mapping approaches based on image metadata and colour chart images were compared. It was found that introducing a one-time calibration step of imaging a colour chart for each device leads to the best compatibility of results from different phones. In a clinical study at the Royal Free Hospital, London, over 100 sets of patient scleral images were captured with two different smartphones and paired clinical information was recorded. A filtering algorithm was developed to tackle the high density of blood vessels and specular reflection observed in the images, yielding a 94% success rate. Strong cross-sectional and longitudinal correlations of scleral yellowness and serum bilirubin level were found of 0.89 and 0.72 respectively (both p<0.001). When the proposed processing was applied, results from the two phones were demonstrated to be compatible. These results demonstrate the strong potential for the system as a monitoring tool

    Investigations into colour constancy by bridging human and computer colour vision

    PhD ThesisThe mechanism of colour constancy within the human visual system has long been of great interest to researchers within the psychophysical and image processing communities. With the maturation of colour imaging techniques for both scientific and artistic applications the importance of colour capture accuracy has consistently increased. Colour offers a great deal more information for the viewer than grayscale imagery, ranging from object detection to food ripeness and health estimation amongst many others. However these tasks rely upon the colour constancy process in order to discount scene illumination to allow these tasks to be carried out. Psychophysical studies have attempted to uncover the inner workings of this mechanism, which would allow it to be reproduced algorithmically. This would allow the development of devices which can eventually capture and perceive colour in the same manner as a human viewer. These two communities have approached this challenge from opposite ends, and as such very different and largely unconnected approaches. This thesis investigates the development of studies and algorithms which bridge the two communities. Utilising findings from psychophysical studies as inspiration to firstly improve an existing image enhancement algorithm. Results are then compared to state of the art methods. Then, using further knowledge, and inspiration, of the human visual system to develop a novel colour constancy approach. This approach attempts to mimic and replicate the mechanism of colour constancy by investigating the use of a physiological colour space and specific scene contents to estimate illumination. Performance of the colour constancy mechanism within the visual system is then also investigated. The performance of the mechanism across different scenes and commonly and uncommonly encountered illuminations is tested. The importance of being able to bridge these two communities, with a successful colour constancy method, is then further illustrated with a case study investigating the human visual perception of the agricultural produce of tomatoes.EPSRC DTA: Institute of Neuroscience, Newcastle University

    Many techniques have been developed in computer vision to recover three-dimensional shape from two-dimensional images. These techniques impose various combinations of assumptions/restrictions of conditions to produce a representation of shape (e.g. surface normals or a height map). Although great progress has been made it is a problem which remains far from solved. In this thesis we propose a new approach to shape recovery - namely `mutual illumination photometric stereo'.     Towards Better Methods of Stereoscopic 3D Media Adjustment and Stylization

    Stereoscopic 3D (S3D) media is pervasive in film, photography and art. However, working with S3D media poses a number of interesting challenges arising from capture and editing. In this thesis we address several of these challenges. In particular, we address disparity adjustment and present a layer-based method that can reduce disparity without distorting the scene. Our method was successfully used to repair several images for the 2014 documentary “Soldiers’ Stories” directed by Jonathan Kitzen. We then explore consistent and comfortable methods for stylizing stereo images. Our approach uses a modified version of the layer-based technique used for disparity adjustment and can be used with a variety of stylization filters, including those in Adobe Photoshop. We also present a disparity-aware painterly rendering algorithm. A user study concluded that our layer-based stylization method produced S3D images that were more comfortable than previous methods. Finally, we address S3D line drawing from S3D photographs. Line drawing is a common art style that our layer-based method is not able to reproduce. To improve the depth perception of our line drawings we optionally add stylized shading. An expert survey concluded that our results were comfortable and reproduced a sense of depth

    Effectiveness of specularity removal from hyperspectral images on the quality of spectral signatures of food products

    Specularity or highlight problem exists widely in hyperspectral images, provokes reflectance deviation from its true value, and can hide major defects in food objects or detecting spurious false defects causing failure of inspection and detection processes. In this study, a new non-iterative method based on the dichromatic reflection model and principle component analysis (PCA) was proposed to detect and remove specular highlight components from hyperspectral images acquired by various imaging modes and under different configurations for numerous agro-food products. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach, the details of the proposed method were described and the experimental results on various spectral images were presented. The results revealed that the method worked well on all hyperspectral and multispectral images examined in this study, effectively reduced the specularity and significantly improves the quality of the extracted spectral data. Besides the spectral images from available databases, the robustness of this approach was further validated with real captured hyperspectral images of different food materials. By using qualitative and quantitative evaluation based on running time and peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), the experimental results showed that the proposed method outperforms other specularity removal methods over the datasets of hyperspectral and multispectral images.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
