The Nonsubsampled Contourlet Transform Based Statistical Medical Image Fusion Using Generalized Gaussian Density
We propose a novel medical image fusion scheme based on the statistical dependencies between coefficients in the nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) domain, in which the probability density function of the NSCT coefficients is concisely fitted using generalized Gaussian density (GGD), as well as the similarity measurement of two subbands is accurately computed by Jensen-Shannon divergence of two GGDs. To preserve more useful information from source images, the new fusion rules are developed to combine the subbands with the varied frequencies. That is, the low frequency subbands are fused by utilizing two activity measures based on the regional standard deviation and Shannon entropy and the high frequency subbands are merged together via weight maps which are determined by the saliency values of pixels. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly outperforms the conventional NSCT based medical image fusion approaches in both visual perception and evaluation indices

Multisensor Concealed Weapon Detection Using the Image Fusion Approach
Detection of concealed weapons is an increasingly important problem for both military and police since global terrorism and crime have grown as threats over the years. This work presents two image fusion algorithms, one at pixel level and another at feature level, for efficient concealed weapon detection application. Both the algorithms presented in this work are based on the double-density dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DDDTCWT). In the pixel level fusion scheme, the fusion of low frequency band coefficients is determined by the local contrast, while the high frequency band fusion rule is developed with consideration of both texture feature of the human visual system (HVS) and local energy basis. In the feature level fusion algorithm, features are exacted using Gaussian Mixture model (GMM) based multiscale segmentation approach and the fusion rules are developed based on region activity measurement. Experiment results demonstrate the robustness and efficiency of the proposed algorithms
Thin Cap Fibroatheroma Detection in Virtual Histology Images Using Geometric and Texture Features
Atherosclerotic plaque rupture is the most common mechanism responsible for a majority
of sudden coronary deaths. The precursor lesion of plaque rupture is thought to be a thin
cap fibroatheroma (TCFA), or “vulnerable plaque”. Virtual Histology-Intravascular Ultrasound
(VH-IVUS) images are clinically available for visualising colour-coded coronary artery tissue.
However, it has limitations in terms of providing clinically relevant information for identifying
vulnerable plaque. The aim of this research is to improve the identification of TCFA using VH-IVUS
images. To more accurately segment VH-IVUS images, a semi-supervised model is developed by
means of hybrid K-means with Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) and a minimum Euclidean
distance algorithm (KMPSO-mED). Another novelty of the proposed method is fusion of different
geometric and informative texture features to capture the varying heterogeneity of plaque components
and compute a discriminative index for TCFA plaque, while the existing research on TCFA detection
has only focused on the geometric features. Three commonly used statistical texture features are
extracted from VH-IVUS images: Local Binary Patterns (LBP), Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrix
(GLCM), and Modified Run Length (MRL). Geometric and texture features are concatenated in
order to generate complex descriptors. Finally, Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN), kNN
(K-Nearest Neighbour), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers are applied to select the best
classifier for classifying plaque into TCFA and Non-TCFA. The present study proposes a fast and
accurate computer-aided method for plaque type classification. The proposed method is applied to 588 VH-IVUS images obtained from 10 patients. The results prove the superiority of the proposed
method, with accuracy rates of 98.61% for TCFA plaque. This research was funded by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) under Research University
