Multiscale Retinex Application to Analyze Face Recognition

    Get PDF
The main challenge that facial recognition introduces is the difficulty of uneven lighting or dark tendencies. The image is poorly lit, which makes it difficult for the system to perform facial recognition. This study aims to normalize the lighting in the image using the Multiscale Retinex method. This method is applied to a face recognition system based on Principal Component Analysis to determine whether this method effectively improves images with uneven lighting. The results showed that the Multiscale Retinex approach to face recognition's correctness was better, from 40% to 76%. Multiscale Retinex has the advantage of dark facial image types because it produces a brighter image output

【Abstract】Endoscopic vision plays a significant role in minimally invasive surgical procedures. The visibility and maintenance of such direct in-situ vision is paramount not only for safety by preventing inadvertent injury, but also to improve precision and reduce operating time. Unfortunately, endoscopic vision is unavoidably degraded due to illumination variations during surgery. This work aims to restore or augment such degraded visualization and quantitatively evaluate it during robotic surgery. A multiscale bilateral-weighted retinex method is proposed to remove non-uniform and highly directional illumination and enhance surgical vision, while an objective noreference image visibility assessment method is defined in terms of sharpness, naturalness, and contrast, to quantitatively and objectively evaluate endoscopic visualization on surgical video sequences. The methods were validated on surgical data, with the experimental results showing that our method outperforms existent retinex approaches. In particular, the combined visibility was improved from 0.81 to 1.06, while three surgeons generally agreed that the results were restored with much better visibility. The authors thank the assistance of Dr. Stephen Pautler for facilitating the data acquisition, Dr. A. Detail Preserving Low Illumination Image and Video Enhancement Algorithm Based on Dark Channel Prior

In low illumination situations, insufficient light in the monitoring device results in poor visibility of effective information, which cannot meet practical applications. To overcome the above problems, a detail preserving low illumination video image enhancement algorithm based on dark channel prior is proposed in this paper. First, a dark channel refinement method is proposed, which is defined by imposing a structure prior to the initial dark channel to improve the image brightness. Second, an anisotropic guided filter (AnisGF) is used to refine the transmission, which preserves the edges of the image. Finally, a detail enhancement algorithm is proposed to avoid the problem of insufficient detail in the initial enhancement image. To avoid video flicker, the next video frames are enhanced based on the brightness of the first enhanced frame. Qualitative and quantitative analysis shows that the proposed algorithm is superior to the contrast algorithm, in which the proposed algorithm ranks first in average gradient, edge intensity, contrast, and patch-based contrast quality index. It can be effectively applied to the enhancement of surveillance video images and for wider computer vision applications

Color Image Enhancement Method Based on Weighted Image Guided Filtering

A novel color image enhancement method is proposed based on Retinex to enhance color images under non-uniform illumination or poor visibility conditions. Different from the conventional Retinex algorithms, the Weighted Guided Image Filter is used as a surround function instead of the Gaussian filter to estimate the background illumination, which can overcome the drawbacks of local blur and halo artifact that may appear by Gaussian filter. To avoid color distortion, the image is converted to the HSI color model, and only the intensity channel is enhanced. Then a linear color restoration algorithm is adopted to convert the enhanced intensity image back to the RGB color model, which ensures the hue is constant and undistorted. Experimental results show that the proposed method is effective to enhance both color and gray images with low exposure and non-uniform illumination, resulting in better visual quality than traditional method. At the same time, the objective evaluation indicators are also superior to the conventional methods. In addition, the efficiency of the proposed method is also improved thanks to the linear color restoration algorithm.Comment: 15 page
