Negative emotions boost users activity at BBC Forum
We present an empirical study of user activity in online BBC discussion
forums, measured by the number of posts written by individual debaters and the
average sentiment of these posts. Nearly 2.5 million posts from over 18
thousand users were investigated. Scale free distributions were observed for
activity in individual discussion threads as well as for overall activity. The
number of unique users in a thread normalized by the thread length decays with
thread length, suggesting that thread life is sustained by mutual discussions
rather than by independent comments. Automatic sentiment analysis shows that
most posts contain negative emotions and the most active users in individual
threads express predominantly negative sentiments. It follows that the average
emotion of longer threads is more negative and that threads can be sustained by
negative comments. An agent based computer simulation model has been used to
reproduce several essential characteristics of the analyzed system. The model
stresses the role of discussions between users, especially emotionally laden
quarrels between supporters of opposite opinions, and represents many observed

About the nature of Kansei information, from abstract to concrete
Designer’s expertise refers to the scientific fields of emotional design and kansei information. This paper aims to answer to a scientific major issue which is, how to formalize designer’s knowledge, rules, skills into kansei information systems. Kansei can be considered as a psycho-physiologic, perceptive, cognitive and affective process through a particular experience. Kansei oriented methods include various approaches which deal with semantics and emotions, and show the correlation with some design properties. Kansei words may include semantic, sensory, emotional descriptors, and also objects names and product attributes. Kansei levels of information can be seen on an axis going from abstract to concrete dimensions. Sociological value is the most abstract information positioned on this axis. Previous studies demonstrate the values the people aspire to drive their emotional reactions in front of particular semantics. This means that the value dimension should be considered in kansei studies. Through a chain of value-function-product attributes it is possible to enrich design generation and design evaluation processes. This paper describes some knowledge structures and formalisms we established according to this chain, which can be further used for implementing computer aided design tools dedicated to early design. These structures open to new formalisms which enable to integrate design information in a non-hierarchical way. The foreseen algorithmic implementation may be based on the association of ontologies and bag-of-words.AN

Electrophysiological Studies of Visual Attention and of Emotion Regulation
Electrophysiological methods, such as electroencephalography (EEG) and electrocardiography (ECG), measure biological activity that allow us to infer underlying cognitive processes. In the first study, we use EEG to track feature-based attention (FBA), a form of visual attention that helps one detect objects with a particular color, motion, or orientation. We explore the use of SSVEPs, generated by flicker presented peripherally, to track attention in a visual search task presented centrally. Classification results show that one can track an observer’s attended color, which suggests that these methods may provide a viable means for tracking FBA in a real-time task. In the second study, we use cardiovascular measures to examine influences of the emotion regulation strategy of reappraisal. We examine cooperation and cardiovascular responses in individuals that were defected on by their opponent in the first round of an iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma. We find significant differences between the emotion regulation conditions using the biopsychosocial (BPS) model of challenge and threat, where participants primed with the reappraisal strategy were weakly comparable with a threat state of the BPS model and participants without an emotion regulation were weakly comparable with a challenge state of the BPS model. In the third study, we use EEG to study the chromatic sensitivity of FBA for color during a visual search task. We use SSVEP responses evoked through peripheral flicker to measure the spectral tuning of color detection mechanisms and how attentional selection is affected by distractor color. Our results find smaller responses for the distractor colors and suggest that feature-based attention to a particular color involves chromatic mechanisms that both enhance the response to a target and minimize responses to distractors

Change blindness: eradication of gestalt strategies
Arrays of eight, texture-defined rectangles were used as stimuli in a one-shot change blindness (CB) task where there was a 50% chance that one rectangle would change orientation between two successive presentations separated by an interval. CB was eliminated by cueing the target rectangle in the first stimulus, reduced by cueing in the interval and unaffected by cueing in the second presentation. This supports the idea that a representation was formed that persisted through the interval before being 'overwritten' by the second presentation (Landman et al, 2003 Vision Research 43149–164]. Another possibility is that participants used some kind of grouping or Gestalt strategy. To test this we changed the spatial position of the rectangles in the second presentation by shifting them along imaginary spokes (by ±1 degree) emanating from the central fixation point. There was no significant difference seen in performance between this and the standard task [F(1,4)=2.565, p=0.185]. This may suggest two things: (i) Gestalt grouping is not used as a strategy in these tasks, and (ii) it gives further weight to the argument that objects may be stored and retrieved from a pre-attentional store during this task
A study to measure the stimulus value of color as an indicator of an individual's emotional relationship to the environment
Thesis (Ed.D.)--Boston University.Summary of the study.-- This study was concerned with the separation capacity of color responses when reacted to within a structured and unstructured frame of reference. Two groups of children were selected by means of a Q-sort designed to discriminate between extratensive and introversive behavior. Classroom teachers described each child, in their class, using the Q-sort. Children whose scores fell in the fourth quartile were matched with children whose scores fel I in the
first quartile with regard for the variables sex, chronological age, intelligence, mental age, and socio-economic status.
A Pure-Color Blot Test, designed by the author, was administered to one-half of the experimental group. They were then given the Rorschach Test. The remaining half of the group responded to the Rorschach Test first and then the Pure-Color Blots.
Three separate protocols were obtained for each child. One was a verbatim record of their responses to each color card in terms of I) their first mental association, and 2) how they felt when they looked at the color. Another was a completely scored Rorschach protocol which included a verbatim record of the content and Inquiry. The third was an extrapolation of Rorschach data. The erlebnistyp and supporting ratios were scored and summarized in a separate protocol.
Three qualified psychologists reacted to each prqtocol. Their scores were correlated with the score obtained by the classroom teacher. The degree of correlation between the scores was assumed to be representative of the separation capacity of each protocol. [TRUNCATED
