Machine Learning for Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Networking
Fueled by the advancement of 5G new radio (5G NR), rapid development has occurred in many fields. Compared with the conventional approaches, beamforming and network slicing enable 5G NR to have ten times decrease in latency, connection density, and experienced throughput than 4G long term evolution (4G LTE). These advantages pave the way for the evolution of Cyber-physical Systems (CPS) on a large scale. The reduction of consumption, the advancement of control engineering, and the simplification of Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) enable the UAS networking deployment on a large scale to become feasible. The UAS networking can finish multiple complex missions simultaneously. However, the limitations of the conventional approaches are still a big challenge to make a trade-off between the massive management and efficient networking on a large scale.
With 5G NR and machine learning, in this dissertation, my contributions can be summarized as the following: I proposed a novel Optimized Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (OAODV) routing protocol to improve the throughput of Intra UAS networking. The novel routing protocol can reduce the system overhead and be efficient. To improve the security, I proposed a blockchain scheme to mitigate the malicious basestations for cellular connected UAS networking and a proof-of-traffic (PoT) to improve the efficiency of blockchain for UAS networking on a large scale. Inspired by the biological cell paradigm, I proposed the cell wall routing protocols for heterogeneous UAS networking. With 5G NR, the inter connections between UAS networking can strengthen the throughput and elasticity of UAS networking. With machine learning, the routing schedulings for intra- and inter- UAS networking can enhance the throughput of UAS networking on a large scale. The inter UAS networking can achieve the max-min throughput globally edge coloring. I leveraged the upper and lower bound to accelerate the optimization of edge coloring.
This dissertation paves a way regarding UAS networking in the integration of CPS and machine learning. The UAS networking can achieve outstanding performance in a decentralized architecture. Concurrently, this dissertation gives insights into UAS networking on a large scale. These are fundamental to integrating UAS and National Aerial System (NAS), critical to aviation in the operated and unmanned fields. The dissertation provides novel approaches for the promotion of UAS networking on a large scale. The proposed approaches extend the state-of-the-art of UAS networking in a decentralized architecture. All the alterations can contribute to the establishment of UAS networking with CPS
A Journey from Improper Gaussian Signaling to Asymmetric Signaling
The deviation of continuous and discrete complex random variables from the
traditional proper and symmetric assumption to a generalized improper and
asymmetric characterization (accounting correlation between a random entity and
its complex conjugate), respectively, introduces new design freedom and various
potential merits. As such, the theory of impropriety has vast applications in
medicine, geology, acoustics, optics, image and pattern recognition, computer
vision, and other numerous research fields with our main focus on the
communication systems. The journey begins from the design of improper Gaussian
signaling in the interference-limited communications and leads to a more
elaborate and practically feasible asymmetric discrete modulation design. Such
asymmetric shaping bridges the gap between theoretically and practically
achievable limits with sophisticated transceiver and detection schemes in both
coded/uncoded wireless/optical communication systems. Interestingly,
introducing asymmetry and adjusting the transmission parameters according to
some design criterion render optimal performance without affecting the
bandwidth or power requirements of the systems. This dual-flavored article
initially presents the tutorial base content covering the interplay of
reality/complexity, propriety/impropriety and circularity/noncircularity and

In the last decades the restless evolution of information and communication technologies (ICT) brought to a deep transformation of our habits. The growth of the Internet and the advances in hardware and software implementations modified our way to communicate and to share information. Achieving reliable and enhanced communication in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs)
A thesis submitted to the University of Bedfordshire in partial fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor of PhilosophyWith the envisioned age of Internet of Things (IoTs), different aspects of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) will be linked so as to advance road transportation safety, ease congestion of road traffic, lessen air pollution, improve passenger transportation comfort and significantly reduce road accidents. In vehicular networks, regular exchange of current position, direction, speed, etc., enable mobile vehicle to foresee an imminent vehicle accident and notify the driver early enough in order to take appropriate action(s) or the vehicle on its own may take adequate preventive measures to avert the looming accident. Actualizing this concept requires use of shared media access protocol that is capable of guaranteeing reliable and timely broadcast of safety messages. This dissertation investigates the use of Network Coding (NC) techniques to enrich the content of each transmission and ensure improved high reliability of the broadcasted safety messages with less number of retransmissions. A Code Aided Retransmission-based Error Recovery (CARER) protocol is proposed. In order to avoid broadcast storm problem, a rebroadcasting vehicle selection metric η, is developed, which is used to select a vehicle that will rebroadcast the received encoded message. Although the proposed CARER protocol demonstrates an impressive performance, the level of incurred overhead is fairly high due to the use of complex rebroadcasting vehicle selection metric. To resolve this issue, a Random Network Coding (RNC) and vehicle clustering based vehicular communication scheme with low algorithmic complexity, named Reliable and Enhanced Cooperative Cross-layer MAC (RECMAC) scheme, is proposed. The use of this clustering technique enables RECMAC to subdivide the vehicular network into small manageable, coordinated clusters which further improve transmission reliability and minimise negative impact of network overhead. Similarly, a Cluster Head (CH) selection metric ℱ(\u1d457) is designed, which is used to determine and select the most suitably qualified candidate to become the CH of a particular cluster. Finally, in order to investigate the impact of available radio spectral resource, an in-depth study of the required amount of spectrum sufficient to support high transmission reliability and minimum latency requirements of critical road safety messages in vehicular networks was carried out. White Paper on Critical and Massive Machine Type Communication Towards 6G
The society as a whole, and many vertical sectors in particular, is becoming
increasingly digitalized. Machine Type Communication (MTC), encompassing its
massive and critical aspects, and ubiquitous wireless connectivity are among
the main enablers of such digitization at large. The recently introduced 5G New
Radio is natively designed to support both aspects of MTC to promote the
digital transformation of the society. However, it is evident that some of the
more demanding requirements cannot be fully supported by 5G networks.
Alongside, further development of the society towards 2030 will give rise to
new and more stringent requirements on wireless connectivity in general, and
MTC in particular. Driven by the societal trends towards 2030, the next
generation (6G) will be an agile and efficient convergent network serving a set
of diverse service classes and a wide range of key performance indicators
(KPI). This white paper explores the main drivers and requirements of an
MTC-optimized 6G network, and discusses the following six key research
questions:
- Will the main KPIs of 5G continue to be the dominant KPIs in 6G; or will
there emerge new key metrics?
- How to deliver different E2E service mandates with different KPI
requirements considering joint-optimization at the physical up to the
application layer?
- What are the key enablers towards designing ultra-low power receivers and
highly efficient sleep modes?
- How to tackle a disruptive rather than incremental joint design of a
massively scalable waveform and medium access policy for global MTC
connectivity?
- How to support new service classes characterizing mission-critical and
dependable MTC in 6G?
- What are the potential enablers of long term, lightweight and flexible

Channel Estimation and Equalization for Cooperative Communication
The revolutionary concept of space-time coding introduced in the last decade has demonstrated that the deployment of multiple antennas at the transmitter allows for simultaneous increase in throughput and reliability because of the additional degrees of freedom offered by the spatial dimension of the wireless channel. However, the use of antenna arrays is not practical for deployment in some practical scenarios, e. g. , sensor networks, due to space and power limitations. A new form of realizing transmit diversity has been recently introduced under the name of user cooperation or cooperative diversity. The basic idea behind cooperative diversity rests on the observation that in a wireless environment, the signal transmitted by the source node is overheard by other nodes, which can be defined as "partners" or "relays". The source and its partners can jointly process and transmit their information, creating a "virtual antenna array" and therefore emulating transmit diversity. Most of the ongoing research efforts in cooperative diversity assume frequency flat channels with perfect channel knowledge. However, in practical scenarios, e. g. broadband wireless networks, these assumptions do not apply. Frequency-selective fading and imperfect channel knowledge should be considered as a more realistic channel model. The development of equalization and channel estimation algorithms play a crucial element in the design of digital receivers as their accuracy determine the overall performance. This dissertation creates a framework for designing and analyzing various time and frequency domain equalization schemes, i. e. distributed time reversal (D-TR) STBC, distributed single carrier frequency domain (D-SC-FDE) STBC, and distributed orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (D-OFDM) STBC schemes, for broadband cooperative communication systems. Exploiting the orthogonally embedded in D-STBCs, we were able to maintain low-decoding complexity for all underlying schemes, thus, making them excellent candidates for practical scenarios, such as multi-media broadband communication systems. Furthermore, we propose and analyze various non-coherent and channel estimation algorithms to improve the quality and reliability of wireless communication networks. Specifically, we derive a non-coherent decoding rule which can be implemented in practice by a Viterbi-type algorithm. We demonstrate through the derivation of a pairwise error probability expression that the proposed non-coherent detector guarantees full diversity. Although this decoding rule has been derived assuming quasi-static channels, its inherent channel tracking capability allows its deployment over time-varying channels with a promising performance as a sub-optimal solution. As a possible alternative to non-coherent detection, we also investigate the performance of mismatched-coherent receiver, i. e. , coherent detection with imperfect channel estimation. Our performance analysis demonstrates that the mismatched-coherent receiver is able to collect the full diversity as its non-coherent competitor over quasi-static channels. Finally, we investigate and analyze the effect of multiple antennas deployment at the cooperating terminals assuming different relaying techniques. We derive pairwise error probability expressions quantifying analytically the impact of multiple antenna deployment at the source, relay and/or destination terminals on the diversity order for each of the relaying methods under consideration
Security and Privacy Issues in Wireless Mesh Networks: A Survey
This book chapter identifies various security threats in wireless mesh
network (WMN). Keeping in mind the critical requirement of security and user
privacy in WMNs, this chapter provides a comprehensive overview of various
possible attacks on different layers of the communication protocol stack for
WMNs and their corresponding defense mechanisms. First, it identifies the
security vulnerabilities in the physical, link, network, transport, application
layers. Furthermore, various possible attacks on the key management protocols,
user authentication and access control protocols, and user privacy preservation
protocols are presented. After enumerating various possible attacks, the
chapter provides a detailed discussion on various existing security mechanisms
and protocols to defend against and wherever possible prevent the possible
attacks. Comparative analyses are also presented on the security schemes with
regards to the cryptographic schemes used, key management strategies deployed,
use of any trusted third party, computation and communication overhead involved
etc. The chapter then presents a brief discussion on various trust management
approaches for WMNs since trust and reputation-based schemes are increasingly
becoming popular for enforcing security in wireless networks. A number of open
problems in security and privacy issues for WMNs are subsequently discussed

The NASA Probe space mission concept, Cosmic Evolution Through UV Surveys (CETUS)
The mission concept, Cosmic Origins Through UV Surveys (CETUS) is an all-UV
space mission concept that was selected and funded by NASA for study in 2017.
The main capabilities of CETUS that even Hubble doesn't have are: (1)
wide-field (17.4'x17.4') imaging and spectroscopy of astronomical sources with
<0.5'' resolution; (2) spectral sensitivity to UV radiation at wavelengths as
short as 1000 {\AA}; (3) near-UV multi-object slit spectroscopy; and (4)
rapid-response UV spectroscopy and deep imaging of transients like GW 170817;
and (5) 23 times higher sensitivity to extended sources.
The main purposes of this CETUS Final Report are to describe the CETUS
scientific program and to demonstrate the maturity of its instrumentation,
which forms the basis of its estimated cost. While there are similarities of
this Final Report to that submitted to NASA in March 2019 by the Goddard Space
Flight Center, there are important differences including the following. *
Science. The science case has been refreshed, deepened, and expanded as a
result of ideas and recommendations expressed in the Astro2020 science white
papers. * Instrumentation. Detailed investigations including a high-level error
budget for focus with implications for thermal management, target acquisition
in the MOS micro-shutter array, contamination control have been carried out. *
Mission Design. The spacecraft and mission operations concepts as developed by
NGIS Gilbert (formerly Orbital ATK) rather than the output of Goddard's Mission

A Survey on platoon-based vehicular cyber-physical systems
Vehicles on the road with some common interests can cooperatively form a platoon-based driving pattern, in which a vehicle follows another one and maintains a small and nearly constant distance to the preceding vehicle. It has been proved that, compared to driving individually, such a platoon-based driving pattern can significantly improve the road capacity and energy efficiency. Moreover, with the emerging vehicular adhoc network (VANET), the performance of platoon in terms of road capacity, safety and energy efficiency, etc., can be further improved. On the other hand, the physical dynamics of vehicles inside the platoon can also affect the performance of VANET. Such a complex system can be considered as a platoon-based vehicular cyber-physical system (VCPS), which has attracted significant attention recently. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey on platoon-based VCPS. We first review the related work of platoon-based VCPS. We then introduce two elementary techniques involved in platoon-based VCPS: the vehicular networking architecture and standards, and traffic dynamics, respectively. We further discuss the fundamental issues in platoon-based VCPS, including vehicle platooning/clustering, cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC), platoon-based vehicular communications, etc., and all of which are characterized by the tight coupled relationship between traffic dynamics and VANET behaviors. Since system verification is critical to VCPS development, we also give an overview of VCPS simulation tools. Finally, we share our view on some open issues that may lead to new research directions
