    Search-based 3D Planning and Trajectory Optimization for Safe Micro Aerial Vehicle Flight Under Sensor Visibility Constraints

    Safe navigation of Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) requires not only obstacle-free flight paths according to a static environment map, but also the perception of and reaction to previously unknown and dynamic objects. This implies that the onboard sensors cover the current flight direction. Due to the limited payload of MAVs, full sensor coverage of the environment has to be traded off with flight time. Thus, often only a part of the environment is covered. We present a combined allocentric complete planning and trajectory optimization approach taking these sensor visibility constraints into account. The optimized trajectories yield flight paths within the apex angle of a Velodyne Puck Lite 3D laser scanner enabling low-level collision avoidance to perceive obstacles in the flight direction. Furthermore, the optimized trajectories take the flight dynamics into account and contain the velocities and accelerations along the path.     Experimental Validation Of An Integrated Guidance And Control System For Marine Surface Vessels

    Autonomous operation of marine surface vessels is vital for minimizing human errors and providing efficient operations of ships under varying sea states and environmental conditions which is complicated by the highly nonlinear dynamics of marine surface vessels. To deal with modelling imprecision and unpredictable disturbances, the sliding mode methodology has been employed to devise a heading and a surge displacement controller. The implementation of such a controller necessitates the availability of all state variables of the vessel. However, the measured signals in the current study are limited to the global X and Y positioning coordinates of the boat that are generated by a GPS system. Thus, a nonlinear observer, based on the sliding mode methodology, has been implemented to yield accurate estimates of the state variables in the presence of both structured and unstructured uncertainties. Successful autonomous operation of a marine surface vessel requires a holistic approach encompassing a navigation system, robust nonlinear controllers and observers. Since the overwhelming majority of the experimental work on autonomous marine surface vessels was not conducted in truly uncontrolled real-world environments. The first goal of this work was to experimentally validate a fully-integrated LOS guidance system with a sliding mode controller and observer using a 16’ Tracker Pro Guide V-16 aluminium boat with a 60 hp. Mercury outboard motor operating in the uncontrolled open-water environment of Lake St. Clair, Michigan. The fully integrated guidance and controller-observer system was tested in a model-less configuration, whereby all information provided from the vessel’s nominal model have been ignored. The experimental data serves to demonstrate the robustness and good tracking characteristics of the fully-integrated guidance and controller/observer system by overcoming the large errors induced at the beginning of each segment and converging the boat to the desired trajectory in spite of the presence of environmental disturbances. The second focus of this work was to combine a collision avoidance method with the guidance system that accounted for “International Regulations for Prevention of Collisions at Sea” abbreviated as COLREGS. This new system then needed to be added into the existing architecture. The velocity obstacles method was selected as the base to build upon and additional restrictions were incorporated to account for these additional rules. This completed system was then validated with a software in the loop simulation

    Radar/electro-optical data fusion for non-cooperative UAS sense and avoid

    Abstract This paper focuses on hardware/software implementation and flight results relevant to a multi-sensor obstacle detection and tracking system based on radar/electro-optical (EO) data fusion. The sensing system was installed onboard an optionally piloted very light aircraft (VLA). Test flights with a single intruder plane of the same class were carried out to evaluate the level of achievable situational awareness and the capability to support autonomous collision avoidance. System architecture is presented and special emphasis is given to adopted solutions regarding real time integration of sensors and navigation measurements and high accuracy estimation of sensors alignment. On the basis of Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation data gathered simultaneously with multi-sensor tracking flight experiments, potential of radar/EO fusion is compared with standalone radar tracking. Flight results demonstrate a significant improvement of collision detection performance, mostly due to the change in angular rate estimation accuracy, and confirm data fusion effectiveness for facing EO detection issues. Relative sensors alignment, performance of the navigation unit, and cross-sensor cueing are found to be key factors to fully exploit the potential of multi-sensor architectures

    SAFETY-GUARANTEED TASK PLANNING FOR BIPEDAL NAVIGATION IN PARTIALLY OBSERVABLE ENVIRONMENTS

    Bipedal robots are becoming more capable as basic hardware and control challenges are being overcome, however reasoning about safety at the task and motion planning levels has been largely underexplored. I would like to make key steps towards guaranteeing safe locomotion in cluttered environments in the presence of humans or other dynamic obstacles by designing a hierarchical task planning framework that incorporates safety guarantees at each level. This layered planning framework is composed of a coarse high-level symbolic navigation planner and a lower-level local action planner. A belief abstraction at the global navigation planning level enables belief estimation of non-visible dynamic obstacle states and guarantees navigation safety with collision avoidance. Both planning layers employ linear temporal logic for a reactive game synthesis between the robot and its environment while incorporating lower level safe locomotion keyframe policies into formal task specification design. The high-level symbolic navigation planner has been extended to leverage the capabilities of a heterogeneous multi-agent team to resolve environment assumption violations that appear at runtime. Modifications in the navigation planner in conjunction with a coordination layer allow each agent to guarantee immediate safety and eventual task completion in the presence of an assumption violation if another agent exists that can resolve said violation, e.g. a door is closed that another dexterous agent can open. The planning framework leverages the expressive nature and formal guarantees of LTL to generate provably correct controllers for complex robotic systems. The use of belief space planning for dynamic obstacle belief tracking and heterogeneous robot capabilities to assist one another when environment assumptions are violated allows the planning framework to reduce the conservativeness traditionally associated with using formal methods for robot planning.M.S

    UAS Collision Avoidance Algorithm that Minimizes the Impact on Route Surveillance

    A collision avoidance algorithm is developed and implemented that is applicable to different types of unmanned aerial systems ranging from a single platform with the ability to perform all collision avoidance functions independently to multiple vehicles performing functions as a cooperative group with collision avoidance commands computed at a ground station. The collision avoidance system is exercised and tested using operational hardware and platforms and is demonstrated in representative missions similar to those planned for operational systems. The results presented are the first known flight tests of a global, three-dimensional, geometric collision avoidance system on an unmanned aircraft system. Novel developments using an aggregated collision cone approach allows each unmanned aircraft to detect and avoid collisions with two or more other aircraft simultaneously. The collision avoidance system is implemented using a miniature unmanned aircraft with an onboard autopilot. Various test cases are used to demonstrate the algorithms robustness to different collision encounters. Two-ship encounters at various engagement angles are flight tested. The flight test results are compared with ideal, software-in-the-loop, and hardware-in-the-loop tests
