    This paper describes some of the challenges in defining the terms “collection” and “collection development and management” in the digital age. It uses a four-phase framework to explore the impact of information technology on library collections over the last half-century. It also draws on current doctoral research to explore definitions of “collection” from a wide range of stakeholder perspectives. The paper argues for the continuing importance of libraries’ core functions of collection development and collection management, and of the value of the term “collection”. It also advocates a collaborative network-based approach to developing and managing globally accessible collections in the digital world

    Looking Back, Moving Forward in the Digital Age: A Review of the Collection Management and Development Literature, 2004–8

    The collection and management of digital resources dominated collection development and management literature produced during 2004–8. Themes covered the changing nature of local collections, redefining collection management responsibilities and practices, cooperation and collaboration, and collection assessment and evaluation. The literature reflected the struggle to manage a vast array of resources while library budgets stagnated. While publishers continued to offer more bundles of electronic publications, librarians responded with strategies to collaborate and negotiate for feasible pricing structures. A culture of continuous assessment was a major topic. During this review period, access to and ownership of digital resources reemerged as a pervasive theme. The mood of the literature was generally optimistic in light of the considerable challenges libraries faced in managing their resources to accommodate the rapidly growing and ever-shifting digital landscape. While looking back on the established philosophy of traditional collections activities, authors moved decisively into the digital age and emerged with a positive vision of the future of library collections

    Secondary Teachers’ Descriptions of Blended Learning and Professional Development: A Case Study

    Teachers who were born before the proliferation of computers are a large part of the education workforce. Therefore, it is important to understand how that group of teachers describes the use of technology in their classroom, as well as professional development that they have taken which focused on the implantation of blended learning in their classrooms. The purpose of the qualitative descriptive single case study was to understand how teachers describe technology and blended learning in their classrooms, as well as their descriptions of professional development that focuses on technology regarding blended learning. The overlying research question for the study was how teachers who were born outside the digital age describe technology as it related to blended learning. The underlying research questions were how do teachers describe professional development that focusses on technology and blended learning, and how do teachers describe the use of blended learning in their classroom? The sample included secondary teachers who were born outside of the digital age who taught in an urban school district. Data collection was done in three parts: an online questionnaire, semistructured interviews, and filed notes. The results of this study described how teachers who were born outside of the digital age use technology with their classes, and how professional development has influenced the implementation of blended learning in their classes. Recommendations for future practice with professional development are presented

    Utilization of Geographic Information System in Lunar Mapping

    Substantial digital remote sensing, lunar orbital photography, Earth-based remote sensing, and mapping of a variety of surficial lunar phenomena have occurred since the advent of the Space Age. This has led to a bewildering and quite disparate collection of archival sources insofar as this digital data and its cartographic representation can be found within many countries of the world. The importance of this mapping program in support of human expansion onto our nearest planetary neighbor has been recognized. A series of small scale maps of the Moon at 1 km to 1 cm, done with the support of Geographic Information System (GIS), would serve decision makers well in the process of accessing the development of manned occupance of the Moon. Maps and the data that they are derived from are the primary way in which people explore new environments and use previously discovered data to increase the bounties of any exploration. The inherent advantage of GIS is that it would allow immediate online access on the Moon of topographically represented data with analysis either on site or from Earth

    Readiness For Digital Preservation In Indonesia

    Libraries using institutional repositories aim to manage and preserve digital content. As digital collection providers, they must be prepared to face various problems, especially policy issues regarding how digital collections can develop and can meet user needs in a relatively long time (long-term use). The problem that will be faced is the age of data storage media which can only last at least 10 years so that digital collections must be copied again to reduce the possibility of losing the information contained in digital collections. This problem is one of the reasons for the digital preservation of repository digital collections which are intellectual and cultural property as well as assets for the repository itself. This preservation is a form of organizational readiness in maintaining the existence of the library and preserving the collection so that it has a long term of use. This research uses descriptive quantitative method with a random sampling process with 100 respondents netted in the webometric. Library readiness in digital preservation reaches the consolidate stage, repository institution consolidates its resources for the development of digital preservation. The factors included in this readiness are organizational infrastructure, technological infrastructure, and resources

    Issues related to the adoption of e-books in academic libraries: a literature review

    While e-journals have successfully be integrated into library collections, the same cannot be said about e-books. In this paper, the obstacles to e-book adoption in academic libraries is discussed using a review of the English-language literature published over the period 2007 to 2013. Issues identified are the changing roles of libraries in the digital age; collection development strategies; complex e-book purchase models offered to libraries; questions of copyright, licensing and digital rights management; format considerations; and availability of hardware and software on which to read e-books. Libraries continue to face these challenges today

    The Effectiveness of Digital Leadership at K-12 Schools in Mississippi Regarding Communication and Collaboration During CCRS Implementation

    Successful CCRS implementation requires educators to communicate and collaborate at the local, state, and national level. Technology plays an important role in successful CCRS implementation. This study aims to investigate how digital leadership improves communication and collaboration at K-12 schools in Mississippi regarding implementation of CCRS as well as the effectiveness of different ways of supporting communication and collaboration regarding CCRS implementation. Mixed-method was chosen to investigate the research questions. Ten public school principals from two school districts were interviewed and observed at qualitative stage and two hundred fifty-four public schools teachers participated in the survey at quantitative stage. Interviews were transcribed and coded while survey responses from teachers were analyzed by SPSS. Findings at qualitative stage showed that principals utilized hybrid ways to support teachers’ communication and collaboration regarding CCRS implementation, including formal meetings, group collaboration, trainings, social media, website, online learning, digital teaching, personalized professional development, peers’ modeling, digital management, digital data collection and interpretation, digital citizenship promotion, and website filter. Results of quantitative stage showed that principals were more effective in supporting professional development and digital citizenship regarding CCRS implementation. However, principals were less effective in supporting visionary leadership, digital age learning culture, and systemic improvement regarding CCRS implementation
