Background. Energy awareness in the ICT has become an important issue: ICT is both a key player in energy efficiency, and a power drainer. Focusing on software, recent work suggested the existence of a relationship between power consumption, software configuration and usage patterns in computer systems. Aim. The aim of this work was collecting and analysing power consumption data of a general-purpose computer system, simulating common usage scenarios, in order to extract a power consumption profile for each scenario. Methods. We selected a desktop system running Windows XP as a test machine. Meanwhile, we developed 11 usage scenarios, classified by their functionality, and automated by a GUI testing tool. Then, we conducted several test runs of the scenarios, collecting power consumption data by means of a power meter. Results. Our analysis resulted in an estimation of a power consumption value for each scenario and software application used, obtaining that each single scenario introduced an overhead from 2 to 11 Watts, corresponding to an increase of about 12%. Conclusions. We determined that software and its usage patterns impacts consistently on the power consumption of computer systems. Further work will be devoted to evaluate how power consumption is affected by the usage of specific system resources, like processors, disks, memory et

Syndromic surveillance: two decades experience of sustainable systems – its people not just data!

    Get PDF
Syndromic surveillance is a form of surveillance that generates information for public health action by collecting, analysing and interpreting routine health-related data on symptoms and clinical signs reported by patients and clinicians rather than being based on microbiologically or clinically confirmed cases. In England, a suite of national real-time syndromic surveillance systems (SSS) have been developed over the last 20 years, utilising data from a variety of health care settings (a telehealth triage system, general practice and emergency departments). The real-time systems in England have been used for early detection (e.g. seasonal influenza), for situational awareness (e.g. describing the size and demographics of the impact of a heatwave) and for reassurance of lack of impact on population health of mass gatherings (e.g. the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games). We highlight the lessons learnt from running SSS, for nearly two decades, and propose questions and issues still to be addressed. We feel that syndromic surveillance is an example of the use of ‘big data’, but contend that the focus for sustainable and useful systems should be on the added value of such systems and the importance of people working together to maximise the value for the public health of syndromic surveillance services

How Does GDPR Support Healthcare Transformation to 5P Medicine?

    Get PDF
Health systems advance towards personalized, preventive, predictive, participative precision (5P) medicine, considering the individual's health status, contexts and conditions. This results in fully distributed, highly dynamic, highly complex business systems and processes with multiple, comprehensively cooperating actors from different specialty and policy domains, using their specific methodologies, terminologies, ontologies, knowledge and skills. Rules and regulations governing the business process as well as the organizational, legal and individual conditions, thereby controlling the behavior of the system, are called policies. Trust and confidence needed for running such system are strongly impacted by security and privacy concerns controlled by corresponding policies. The most comprehensive policy dealing with security and privacy requirements and principles in any business collecting, processing and sharing personal identifiable information (PII) is the recently implemented European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This paper investigates how GDPR supports healthcare transformation and how this can be implemented based on international standards and specifications

Evaluating A Self-access Centre’s Effectiveness And efficiency: A Case Study And Reflection

    Get PDF
This article discusses changes that occurred after a case study that examined the effectiveness and efficiency of a Self-access Centre (SAC) within a university in Hong Kong using Morrison's (2003) Evaluation of Self-access Language Learning Centre framework. The case study addressed issues from a stakeholder’s perspective by collecting data from learners through an online questionnaire and conducting 15 semi-structured interviews, an advisers' focus group and management interviews and reports. The outcome of the study showed that a wider perspective for senior managers and insights for evaluation of the support services is vital to making key decisions in context. Upon reflection of the findings with the new SAC manager, more acute decision-making and continuous improvement is needed to enhance effectiveness and efficiency of the running of the SAC. To achieve this, regular feedback from various stakeholders, also re-structuring human and non-human support systems is vital.published_or_final_versio

Towards MLOps in Mobile Development with a Plug-in Architecture for Data Analytics

    Get PDF
Smartphones are increasingly used as universal IoT gateways collecting data from connected sensors in a wide range of industrial applications. With the increasing computing capabilities, they are used not just for simple data aggregation and transferring, but have now become capable of performing advanced data analytics. As AI has become a key element in enterprise software systems, many software development teams rely on dedicated Machine Learning (ML) engineers who often follow agile development practices in their work. However, in the context of mobile app development, there is still limited tooling support for MLOps, mainly due to unsuitability of native programming languages such as Java and Kotlin to support ML-related programming tasks. This paper aims to address this gap and describes a plug-in architecture for developing, deploying and running ML modules for data analytics on the Android platform. The proposed approach advocates for modularity, extensibility, customisation, and separation of concerns, allowing ML engineers to develop their components independently from the main application in an agile and incremental manner.acceptedVersio
