A Literature Review on The Design of Intelligent Supply Chain for Natural Fibre Agroindustry

    Get PDF
Natural fibre is an environmentally friendly raw material that has a great potential to develop, and is abundantly available in nature [1]. Currently, the growth of natural fibre processing industries in the world has been increasingly important [2]. Processing of abundant natural fibre in both upstream and downstream productions requires effective and collaborative supply chain management in terms of information sharing. Thus, an intelligent system would be implemented in supply chain management from upstream to downstream. Based on review of 46 scientific papers discussing on types of natural fibre, process, technology, and methods, as well as application areas of natural fibre in downstream industries. According to review on different aspects in 55 scientific papers, there were 5 aspects mapped, i.e. supply chain analytic, value chain, performance, collaboration, big data, and decision support system. A concept of 4.0 industry underlies utilization of opportunities for application of supply chain analytic [3]. Upcoming research opportunities include mediating relationship in supply chain network by utilizing Internet of things (IoT) and Big data (BD), in a collaborative relationship to use information sharing. The most possibly contributing research is the development of collaboration between supply chain and genetic algorithm [4]. Integration between production and inventory planning becomes an approach that utilizes Particle swarm optimization (PSO) by developing production planning [5], and production and inventory planning [6]. There is a research opportunity in the design of intelligent supply chain for natural fibre agroindustry by implementing IoT and BD as a tool in supply chain analytic, collaboration through Collaboration prediction forecasting and replenishment (CPFR) that occurs between stakeholders with the aim of improving agroindustry supply chain performance in production integration material and inventory, and performance measurement by integrating the Value chain operation reference (VCOR) model developed in supply chain analytic

Purpose The Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to have a huge impact on businesses and, especially, the way we think about supply chain management. However, there is still a paucity of studies on the impact of IoT adoption on supply chains and on different aspects of the business in general. The research aims to examine the perception of the academic community of the impact of the Internet of Things (IoT) adoption in organizational supply chains with a view to verify potential key benefits and challenges existent in the literature. The research presents the impact on an organization along with the impact across its entire supply chain. Design/methodology/approach Data was collected through the use of an online survey and 87 participants completed the survey. Participants were mainly from the academic community and were university scholars based in different countries located in six continents. Participants were authors, or co-authors, of academic papers published in the Decision Science Institute 2015 and 2016 annual conference proceedings, the 21st International Symposium of Sustainable Transport and Supply Chain Innovations, the Supply Chain Management : An International Journal 2016 issues, and the Operations and Supply Chain Management : an International Journal 2016 issues. Findings We were able to confirm the significance of some of the examined potential benefits to individual organizations and their entire supply chains. However, the study identified other potential benefits that were not seen as a direct impact of IoT adoption. Most of the examined potential benefits were found to contribute to a number of critical success factors for implementing successful supply chain management. We were also able to confirm that some of the examined potential challenges were still perceived as key hinders to IoT adoption but examined potential challenges were not seen as hurdles to IoT adoption. Originality/value To our best knowledge, this is the first study of its kind. Although some literature attempted to provide an overview about the IoT management, no study has specifically explored potential benefits and challenges related to the adoption of IoT in supply chains and ranked them based on their significance. The results can be beneficial to; academic scholars interested in the researched topic, business professionals, organizations within different sectors, and any other party interested in understanding more about the impact of adopting IoT on supply chain management

Abstract : Spare parts supply chains are particularly challenged by the low predictability of the demand, the need for high service levels and the cost of inventory. To address these challenges through a strategy of synchronizing supply chain participants, collaborative planning can be combined with intelligent maintenance systems that help predict failures. However, hierarchical models of integration have little acceptance from actors in the chain, who do not wish to share strategic data. Decentralized models promote the feasibility of collaborative planning but have not yet been applied in spare parts supply chains. In this context, in the present work, a bibliometric analysis with a bibliographic review on collaboration and supply chain planning is applied in order to verify the main concepts, directions and research opportunities. Research opportunities were identified in the application of decentralized models in real cases, and there was a general lack of information to support the choice of a solving method. Thus, the objective of this work is to propose a structured procedure to support the application of decentralized collaborative planning in supply chains of spare parts. For this, a table of characteristics is constructed to support the choice of the method for solving linear problems. A structured procedure is then developed and tested to tailor a decentralized collaborative planning concept to a spare parts supply chain integrated with intelligent maintenance systems. This developed structured procedure is applied in a test case and, as a result, an adequate model of collaborative operational planning is proposed for the improvement of this supply chain. Decentralized planning was identified as having achieved better results than a classical management approach even in scenarios of high demand variation, such as in spare parts supply chains

This research sought to identify key elements of the Air Force supply chain as it relates to industry, determine how techniques of information-sharing and collaboration are used to make Air Force Supply Chain decisions, and examine how the resulting impacts on operational readiness may be measured. A multiple case study research design was used to investigate the application of information-sharing and collaboration in two distinct Air Force supply chains. Cross-case comparative analysis of the supply chains supporting the PTO shafts on the F-15 engine and the T-38 engine evaluated each supply chain\u27s characteristics and levels of information-sharing and collaboration. The research highlighted one example of proactive sharing of information and collaborative decision-making to avoid supply chain inefficiencies, and one example of using information-sharing to recover from a decision made without using a collaborative approach. Specifically, the research identified that proactive sharing of information and collaborative decision-making for the T-38 avoided supply chain failures, while the F-15 supply chain was reactive, failing to collaborate or share information, resulting in a failure of the supply chain and an increase in the MICAP rate. The F-15 community used information-sharing to recover from this failure. The culmination of this effort provided insight into the interactions and complexities of the Air Force supply chain and highlighted a need for a more thorough evaluation of the impact of supply chain relationships, information-sharing, and collaborative decision-making on operational readiness
