GazeDPM: Early Integration of Gaze Information in Deformable Part Models
An increasing number of works explore collaborative human-computer systems in
which human gaze is used to enhance computer vision systems. For object
detection these efforts were so far restricted to late integration approaches
that have inherent limitations, such as increased precision without increase in
recall. We propose an early integration approach in a deformable part model,
which constitutes a joint formulation over gaze and visual data. We show that
our GazeDPM method improves over the state-of-the-art DPM baseline by 4% and a
recent method for gaze-supported object detection by 3% on the public POET
dataset. Our approach additionally provides introspection of the learnt models,
can reveal salient image structures, and allows us to investigate the interplay
between gaze attracting and repelling areas, the importance of view-specific
models, as well as viewers' personal biases in gaze patterns. We finally study
important practical aspects of our approach, such as the impact of using
saliency maps instead of real fixations, the impact of the number of fixations,
as well as robustness to gaze estimation error
Exploring the Potential of 3D Visualization Techniques for Usage in Collaborative Design
Best practice for collaborative design demands good interaction between its collaborators. The capacity to share common knowledge about design models at hand is a basic requirement. With current advancing technologies gathering collective knowledge is more straightforward, as the dialog between experts can be supported better. The potential for 3D visualization techniques to become the right support tool for collaborative design is explored. Special attention is put on the possible usage for remote collaboration. The opportunities for current state-of-the-art visualization techniques from stereoscopic vision to holographic displays are researched. A classification of the various systems is explored with respect to their tangible usage for augmented reality. Appropriate interaction methods can be selected based on the usage scenario
Collaborative Control for a Robotic Wheelchair: Evaluation of Performance, Attention, and Workload
Powered wheelchair users often struggle to drive safely and effectively and in more critical cases can only get around when accompanied by an assistant. To address these issues, we propose a collaborative control mechanism that assists the user as and when they require help. The system uses a multiple–hypotheses method to predict the driver’s intentions and if necessary, adjusts the control signals to achieve the desired goal safely. The main emphasis of this paper is on a comprehensive evaluation, where we not only look at the system performance, but, perhaps more importantly, we characterise the user performance, in an experiment that combines eye–tracking with a secondary task. Without assistance, participants experienced multiple collisions whilst driving around the predefined route. Conversely, when they were assisted by the collaborative controller, not only did they drive more safely, but they were able to pay less attention to their driving, resulting in a reduced cognitive workload. We discuss the importance of these results and their implications for other applications of shared control, such as brain–machine interfaces, where it could be used to compensate for both the low frequency and the low resolution of the user input
Gaze and Gestures in Telepresence: multimodality, embodiment, and roles of collaboration
This paper proposes a controlled experiment to further investigate the
usefulness of gaze awareness and gesture recognition in the support of
collaborative work at a distance. We propose to redesign experiments conducted
several years ago with more recent technology that would: a) enable to better
study of the integration of communication modalities, b) allow users to freely
move while collaborating at a distance and c) avoid asymmetries of

A methodological framework for capturing relative eyetracking coordinate data to determine gaze patterns and fixations from two or more observers
While physical activity during cancer treatment is found beneficial for breast cancer patients, evidence indicates ambiguous findings concerning effects of scheduled exercise programs on treatment-related symptoms. This study investigated effects of a scheduled home-based exercise intervention in breast cancer patients during adjuvant chemotherapy, on cancer-related fatigue, physical fitness, and activity level. Sixty-seven women were randomized to an exercise intervention group (n=33, performed strength training 3x/week and 30 minutes brisk walking/day) and a control group (n=34, performed their regular physical activity level). Data collection was performed at baseline, at completion of chemotherapy (Post1), and 6-month postchemotherapy (Post2). Exercise levels were slightly higher in the scheduled exercise group than in the control group. In both groups, cancer-related fatigue increased at Post1 but returned to baseline at Post2. Physical fitness and activity levels decreased at Post1 but were significantly improved at Post2. Significant differences between intervention and control groups were not found. The findings suggest that generally recommended physical activity levels are enough to relief cancer-related fatigue and restore physical capacity in breast cancer patients during adjuvant chemotherapy, although one cannot rule out that results reflect diminishing treatment side effects over time
