Influence of Haptic Communication on a Shared Manual Task in a Collaborative Virtual Environment
International audienceWith the advent of new haptic feedback devices, researchers are giving serious consideration to the incorporation of haptic communication in collaborative virtual environments. For instance, haptic interactions based tools can be used for medical and related education whereby students can train in minimal invasive surgery using virtual reality before approaching human subjects. To design virtual environments that support haptic communication, a deeper understanding of humans' haptic interactions is required. In this paper, human's haptic collaboration is investigated. A collaborative virtual environment was designed to support performing a shared manual task. To evaluate this system, 60 medical students participated to an experimental study. Participants were asked to perform in dyads a needle insertion task after a training period. Results show that compared to conventional training methods, a visual-haptic training improves user's collaborative performance. In addition, we found that haptic interaction influences the partners' verbal communication when sharing haptic information. This indicates that the haptic communication training changes the nature of the users' mental representations. Finally, we found that haptic interactions increased the sense of copresence in the virtual environment: haptic communication facilitates users' collaboration in a shared manual task within a shared virtual environment. Assessing a Collaborative Online Environment for Music Composition
The current pilot study tested the effectiveness of an e-learning environment built to enable students to compose
music collaboratively. The participants interacted online by using synchronous and asynchronous resources to
develop a project in which they composed a new music piece in collaboration. After the learning sessions,
individual semi-structured interviews with the participants were conducted to analyze the participants\u2019
perspectives regarding the e-learning environment\u2019s functionality, the resources of the e-learning platform, and
their overall experience with the e-learning process. Qualitative analyses of forum discussions with respect to
metacognitive dimensions, and semi-structured interview transcriptions were performed. The findings showed
that the participants successfully completed the composition task in the virtual environment, and that they
demonstrated the use of metacognitive processes. Moreover, four themes were apparent in the semi-structured
interview transcriptions: Teamwork, the platform, face-to-face/online differences, and strengths/weaknesses.
Overall, the participants exhibited an awareness of the potential of the online tools, and the task performed. The
results are discussed in consideration of metacognitive processes, and the following aspects that rendered virtual
activity effective for learning: The learning environment, the platform, the technological resources, the level of
challenge, and the nature of the activity. The possible implications of the findings for research on online
collaborative composition are also considered
Global Teamwork: A Study of Design Learning in Collaborative Virtual Environments
With the recent developments in communication and information technologies, using Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVEs) in design activity has experienced a remarkable increase. In this paper we present a collaborative learning activity between the University of Sydney (USYD), and the Istanbul Technical University (ITU). This paper shares our teaching experience and discusses the principles of collaborative design learning in virtual environments. Followed by a study on studentsâ perception on the courses and collaborative learning in both universities, this paper also suggests future refinements on the course structure and the main areas of collaborative design learning.

Exploiting connectedness in the informatics curriculum
The power of modern communication technology gives us an opportunity, as Informatics educators, to enhance our ability to develop our students' skills in virtual teamworking. We discuss why virtual teamworking is as relevant for students in traditional campus-based universities as it is in a distance learning context. We highlight some of the questions to be answered, and some of the problems to be overcome, in the context of our experiences in designing and delivering a virtual teamworking course at the UK Open University
Collaborative E-learning Methodologies: an Experience of Active Knowledge in ICT Classrooms

The general goal of this paper is to contribute for the theoretical discussion on how active and collaborative experiences in ICT classrooms play a role on the construction of knowledge in HEIs. Based on the pointed outlines, we intend to: (1) understand how collaborative e-learning environments get students actively involved in the learning process;(2) perspective the role of collaborative tools at the level of group work and (3) find out how
students assess their performance within a working group. Data was collected through questionnaires available on the e-learning platform Moodle. Descriptive statistical techniques were used to analyze quantitative data. Within the research questions proposed, the study,
points towards some understanding of how a collaborative learning environment seems to get students actively involved in the learning process mainly if the tasks to be perform have an empirical component. The study also has shown that students seem to identify themselves with the need to be involved in simulations of their future professional activity, as well as with the
need to regulate their own learning and to promote discussion not only between peers but also with the teacher

the University of Atilim (Turkey), Universidad

and Middlesex University (UK). Using content and
cluster analyses techniques, we identified distinct
patterns of collaboration and examined how these
patterns were associated with task, culture, GPA, and
performance of collaborative teams. Our results
suggest that communication patterns among global
software learners may be related to task type, culture
and GPA. It is hoped that these findings will lead to the
development of new strategies for improving
communication among global software teams
Computer support for collaborative learning environments
This paper deals with computer support for collaborative learning environments. Our analysis is based on a moderate constructivist view on learning, which emphasizes the need to support learners instructionally in their collaborative knowledge construction. We will first illustrate the extent to which the computer can provide tools for supporting collaborative knowledge construction. Secondly, we will focus on instruction itself and show the kinds of advanced instructional methods that computer tools may provide for the learners. Furthermore, we will discuss the learnersâ prerequisites and how they must be considered when constructing learning environments.Dieser Bericht behandelt die UnterstĂŒtzung kooperativer Lernumgebungen durch den Einsatz von Computern. Darauf aufbauend beschreibt der Bericht in einem ersten Schritt, wie der Computer Werkzeuge zur gemeinsamen Wissenskonstruktion bereitstellen kann. Im zweiten Teil steht die Instruktion fĂŒr das kooperative Lernen im Vordergrund. Project Management Learning in a Collaborative Distant Learning Context - An Actual On-going Experience
The goal of this paper is to show the results of an on-going experience on teaching project management to grade students by following a development scheme of management related competencies on an individual basis. In order to achieve that goal, the students are organized in teams that must solve a problem and manage the development of a feasible solution to satisfy the needs of a client. The innovative component advocated in this paper is the formal introduction of negotiating and virtual team management aspects, as different teams from different universities at different locations and comprising students with different backgrounds must collaborate and compete amongst them. The different learning aspects are identified and the improvement levels are reflected in a rubric that has been designed ad hoc for this experience. Finally, the effort frameworks for the student and instructor have been established according to the requirements of the Bologna paradigms. This experience is developed through a software-based support system allowing blended learning for the theoretical and individual?s work aspects, blogs, wikis, etc., as well as project management tools based on WWW that allow the monitoring of not only the expected deliverables and the achievement of the goals but also the progress made on learning as established in the defined rubri
Collaborative trails in e-learning environments
This deliverable focuses on collaboration within groups of learners, and hence collaborative trails. We begin by reviewing the theoretical background to collaborative learning and looking at the kinds of support that computers can give to groups of learners working collaboratively, and then look more deeply at some of the issues in designing environments to support collaborative learning trails and at tools and techniques, including collaborative filtering, that can be used for analysing collaborative trails. We then review the state-of-the-art in supporting collaborative learning in three different areas â experimental academic systems, systems using mobile technology (which are also generally academic), and commercially available systems. The final part of the deliverable presents three scenarios that show where technology that supports groups working collaboratively and producing collaborative trails may be heading in the near future
Formative peer assessment in a CSCL environment
In this case study our aim was to gain more insight in the possibilities of qualitative formative peer assessment in a computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL) environment. An approach was chosen in which peer assessment was operationalised in assessment assignments and assessment tools that were embedded in the course material. The course concerned a higher education case-based virtual seminar, in which students were asked to conduct research and write a report in small multidisciplinary teams. The assessment assignments contained the discussion of assessment criteria, the assessment of a group report of a fellow group, and writing an assessment report. A list of feedback rules was one of the assessment tools. A qualitative oriented study was conducted, focussing on the attitude of students towards peer assessment and practical use of peer assessment assignments and tools. Results showed that studentsâ attitude towards peer assessment was positive and that assessment assignments had added value. However, not all students fulfilled all assessment assignments. Recommendations for implementation of peer assessment in CSCL environments as well as suggestions for future research are discussed
