Collaborative Technology For Young Children's Outdoor Education
Children participating in classroom field trips learn first hand in an authentic context.
However, activities during these trips are often limited to observation and data
collection. Children synthesize their knowledge later, in classroom discussions and in
the collaborative construction of a representational artifact. But the classroom is
removed from the authentic context in which the knowledge was gained. My
research investigated how mobile technology can bridge this gap by supporting and
encouraging young children (grades K-4) to collaboratively construct knowledge
artifacts, while simultaneously exploring open, educational environments. Three key
elements are addressed; creating a concrete connection between digital information
and the real world, supporting awareness of collaborative opportunities in an open
environment, and promoting face-to-face collaboration.
This dissertation details the conception, design, implementation, and evaluation of the
Tangible Flags technology; a tangible interface that is developmentally appropriate
for children (grades K-4) to embed and access digital information through their
physical environment and multi-user tools that support collaboration in open
environments. Tangible Flags are simple for children to attach to the environment
and promote an awareness of artifact creation and exploration activities because they
are visually apparent. An interface that provides an awareness of changes to digital
artifacts and enables concurrent and remote access to these artifacts further enhances
collaboration.
Two studies were conducted to evaluate the concepts of Tangible Flags. A case study
was conducted in an authentic outdoor learning environment, a National Park. A
second study compares children's use of the Tangible Flags technology to a roughly
equivalent paper system. Quantitative and qualitative analysis indicates that children
using Tangible Flags participated in more asynchronous collaborative activity and
were more engaged than those who did not. It also showed that awareness of peer
activity combined with remote and concurrent access to digital artifacts resulted in
increased face-to-face collaborative activity and examines the impact of artifact
awareness and access on children's focus on the environment. These contributions
will be useful to educators, designers of educational environments and researchers in
the field of children's educational technology

Educational use cases from a shared exploration of e-books and iPads
E-books and e-book readers are becoming increasingly widely available, particularly for the general reader, and there have been many studies on their adoption. However, less is known about their use for educational and academic purposes. We report here on work carried out on e-books and e-book applications using iPads by academic and teaching staff. After considering pedagogical issues and reporting survey results, we identify a spiral of six key use case areas for e-books. This spiral of use cases moves from basic e-book use, through situational reading, e-books and learning, using multiple learning resources, collaborative/group learning, to e-book production. We discuss each of these use case areas and provide guidelines that will be of interest to practitioners and researchers alike

Aspectos motivacionais no design de tecnologia para mudanças sociais

Este estudo de doutorado em Interação Humano-Computador (IHC) investiga como elementos motivacionais da Psicologia podem ser aplicados para informar o design, explo- rando esse potencial da tecnologia em promover mudanças sociais. O estudo é instanciado no domínio de consumo de energia elétrica, lidando com o desafio contemporâneo de cons- cientizar a sociedade dos limites naturais do planeta no que diz respeito ao uso de recursos naturais. Informar o design com aspectos motivacionais é uma abordagem recente em IHC. Quando encontrada na literatura, comumente tem foco em aspectos individuais e intrín- secos da motivação. Contudo, como argumentado nessa pesquisa, o contexto sociocultural evidencia a importância de considerar também os fatores externos que motivam as pessoas a se engajarem com uma tecnologia e com uma determinada questão social. Por considerar tanto fontes intrínsecas quanto extrínsecas de motivação, a Teoria da Autodeterminação é então considerada o principal referencial teórico da Psicologia nessa investigação, e a Semiótica Organizacional é a base metodológica para analisar os elemen- tos socioculturais que influenciam a motivação extrínseca. A análise situada dos dados socioculturais por uma perspectiva motivacional levou ao design da Tecnologia Socialmente Informada para Eco-Feedback de Energia (sigla SEET, em inglês), uma arquitetura que tem por objetivo estabelecer um novo padrão de com- portamento, ou uma nova maneira de perceber o consumo de energia coletivamente. O SEET é composto por um sistema interativo que promove colaboração, e pela Árvore da Energia, um dispositivo de feedback tangível para locais onde há encontro de pessoas. O SEET é avaliado em dois cenários complementares: uma Escola de Ensino Funda- mental no Brasil, onde os dados socioculturais foram coletados, analisados e aplicados para informar o design; e no contexto de um departamento de uma universidade no Reino Unido. Aspectos motivacionais da arquitetura do SEET são então analisadas, assim como o impacto dessa tecnologia ao desencadear as esperadas mudanças sociaisAbstract: By connecting people and being present in almost all aspects of life, when properly de- signed for that, technology can potentially influence the way people in a social group perceive and relate with things in their environment. This PhD study in the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) field investigates how motivational elements from Psychology can be applied to inform the design aiming at exploring this potential of technology for promoting a social change. The study is in- stantiated in the energy consumption domain, coping with the contemporary challenge of raising awareness among the society of the planet¿s natural resources usage and limits. Informing the design with motivational aspects is a recent approach in HCI. When found in literature, it is mostly focused on individual and intrinsic aspects of motivation. However, as argued in this research, the sociocultural context evidences the importance of considering also the external factors that motivate people to be engaged with technology and the social issue. By taking into account both intrinsic and extrinsic sources of motivation, the Self- Determination Theory is then considered the main theoretical background from Psychol- ogy in this investigation, and the Organisational Semiotics the methodological basis to analyse sociocultural elements that influence extrinsic motivation. The situated analysis of sociocultural data with motivational lenses has led to the de- sign of a Socially-informed Energy Eco-feedback Technology (SEET), an architecture that aims at establishing a "new pattern of behaviour", or a new way of perceiving collective energy consumption. The SEET is composed by an interactive system that promotes collaboration and The Energy Tree, a tangible and public feedback device for gathering places. The SEET is evaluated in two complementary scenarios: an elementary school in Brazil, where the sociocultural data was collected, analysed and applied to inform design; and in the context of an university department in the United Kingdom. The case of Foxconn in Turkey: benefiting from free labour and anti-union policy
Starting from the 2000s Foxconn invested in Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary,
Russia and Turkey, implementing a territorial diversification strategy
aimed at getting nearer to its end markets. This chapter investigates the
development of Foxconn in Turkey where the multinational owns a plant
with about 400 workers. A few kilometres from the city of \uc7orlu and close
to highways, ports and international airports, the plant enables Foxconn
to implement an efficient global supply chain. We illustrate this process
by examining the company\u2019s localisation within a special economic zone,
underlining the economic advantages derived from such a tax regime,
bringing labour costs down to the Chinese level and obtaining proximity
to European, North African and Middle East customers, thus lowering
logistic costs. We also analyse the roles of labour flexibility and trade
unions. In order to impose far-reaching flexibility on its workers Foxconn
put in place a range of strategies, including an hours bank system, multitask
operators and the recruitment of apprentices thanks a special
programme funded by the state. We show how these have been crucial
for Foxconn\u2019s just-in-time production contrasting its labour turnover
problem. Finally, we highlight how the company has been able to
implement a flexible working pattern, weaken the trade unions and
undercut workers\u2019 opposition, thanks to favourable labour laws approved
by successive governments in the past thirty years

ment practices in electronics assembly in Europe.1 Electronics is an
extremely dynamic sector, characterized by an ever-changing organi -
zational structure, as well as cut-throat competition, particularly in
manufacturing. Located primarily in East Asia, electronics assembly has
become notorious for poor working conditions, low unionisation and
authoritarian labour relations. However, hostile labour relations and topdown
HR policies are not unique to East Asia. They have become
associated with the way the sector is governed more broadly, with a
number of Western companies also coming to rely on such practices
