    Swarming Reconnaissance Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in a Parallel Discrete Event Simulation

    Current military affairs indicate that future military warfare requires safer, more accurate, and more fault-tolerant weapons systems. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) are one answer to this military requirement. Technology in the UAV arena is moving toward smaller and more capable systems and is becoming available at a fraction of the cost. Exploiting the advances in these miniaturized flying vehicles is the aim of this research. How are the UAVs employed for the future military? The concept of operations for a micro-UAV system is adopted from nature from the appearance of flocking birds, movement of a school of fish, and swarming bees among others. All of these natural phenomena have a common thread: a global action resulting from many small individual actions. This emergent behavior is the aggregate result of many simple interactions occurring within the flock, school, or swarm. In a similar manner, a more robust weapon system uses emergent behavior resulting in no weakest link because the system itself is made up of simple interactions by hundreds or thousands of homogeneous UAVs. The global system in this research is referred to as a swarm. Losing one or a few individual unmanned vehicles would not dramatically impact the swarms ability to complete the mission or cause harm to any human operator. Swarming reconnaissance is the emergent behavior of swarms to perform a reconnaissance operation. An in-depth look at the design of a reconnaissance swarming mission is studied. A taxonomy of passive reconnaissance applications is developed to address feasibility. Evaluation of algorithms for swarm movement, communication, sensor input/analysis, targeting, and network topology result in priorities of each model\u27s desired features. After a thorough selection process of available implementations, a subset of those models are integrated and built upon resulting in a simulation that explores the innovations of swarming UAVs

    Combining stigmergic and flocking behaviors to coordinate swarms of drones performing target search

    Due to growing endurance, safety and non-invasivity, small drones can be increasingly experimented in unstructured environments. Their moderate computing power can be assimilated into swarm coordination algorithms, performing tasks in a scalable manner. For this purpose, it is challenging to investigate the use of biologically-inspired mechanisms. In this paper the focus is on the coordination aspects between small drones required to perform target search. We show how this objective can be better achieved by combining stigmergic and flocking behaviors. Stigmergy occurs when a drone senses a potential target, by releasing digital pheromone on its location. Multiple pheromone deposits are aggregated, increasing in intensity, but also diffused, to be propagated to neighborhood, and lastly evaporated, decreasing intensity in time. As a consequence, pheromone intensity creates a spatiotemporal attractive potential field coordinating a swarm of drones to visit a potential target. Flocking occurs when drones are spatially organized into groups, whose members have approximately the same heading, and attempt to remain in range between them, for each group. It is an emergent effect of individual rules based on alignment, separation and cohesion. In this paper, we present a novel and fully decentralized model for target search, and experiment it empirically using a multi-agent simulation platform.     Aerial collective systems

    Deployment of multiple flying robots has attracted the interest of several research groups in the recent times both because such a feat represents many interesting scientific challenges and because aerial collective systems have a huge potential in terms of applications. By working together, multiple robots can perform a given task quicker or more efficiently than a single system. Furthermore, multiple robots can share computing, sensing and communication payloads thus leading to lighter robots that could be safer than a larger system, easier to transport and even disposable in some cases. Deploying a fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles instead of a single aircraft allows rapid coverage of a relatively larger area or volume. Collaborating airborne agents can help each other by relaying communication or by providing navigation means to their neighbours. Flying in formation provides an effective way of decongesting the airspace. Aerial swarms also have an enormous artistic potential because they allow creating physical 3D structures that can dynamically change their shape over time. However, the challenges to actually build and control aerial swarms are numerous. First of all, a flying platform is often more complicated to engineer than a terrestrial robot because of the inherent weight constraints and the absence of mechanical link with any inertial frame that could provide mechanical stability and state reference. In the first section of this chapter, we therefore review this challenges and provide pointers to state-of-the-art methods to solve them. Then as soon as flying robots need to interact with each other, all sorts of problems arise such as wireless communication from and to rapidly moving objects and relative positioning. The aim of section 3 is therefore to review possible approaches to technically enable coordination among flying systems. Finally, section 4 tackles the challenge of designing individual controllers that enable a coherent behavior at the level of the swarm. This challenge is made even more difficult with flying robots because of their 3D nature and their motion constraints that are often related to the specific architectures of the underlying physical platforms. In this third section is complementary to the rest of this book as it focusses only on methods that have been designed for aerial collective systems

    This thesis studied engagement strategies for countering maritime drone swarm threats using a shipboard laser weapon system (LWS). The thesis examined maritime drone swarm threats to define parameters that characterize the different types of drone swarms expected in the near future. The thesis explored swarm attack formations, defined two potential heterogeneous swarm scenarios, and proposed five engagement strategies involving the order in which a shipboard laser weapon system would fire upon drones in a swarm threat. Modeling and simulation data was collected from the NPS Modeling Virtual Environments and Simulation (MOVES) Swarm Commander Tactics program to study the efficacy of swarm formation and engagement strategies. The results reinforce that the size of the swarm and formations used significantly affect the success rate of the attacking swarm. The complexity of the situation further increases when facing heterogeneous swarms. The results show that the success rate shifts severely in favor of the attacking swarm when using a simple heterogeneous decoy attack. When altering the LWS engagement strategy to counter this, there is a substantial reversal of success rate, which nearly changes the outcome in favor of the defending ship.     Distributed Control of a Swarm of Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    With the increasing use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV)s military operations, there is a growing need to develop new methods of control and navigation for these vehicles. This investigation proposes the use of an adaptive swarming algorithm that utilizes local state information to influence the overall behavior of each individual agent in the swarm based upon the agent\u27s current position in the battlespace. In order to investigate the ability of this algorithm to control UAVs in a cooperative manner, a swarm architecture is developed that allows for on-line modification of basic rules. Adaptation is achieved by using a set of behavior coefficients that define the weight at which each of four basic rules is asserted in an individual based upon local state information. An Evolutionary Strategy (ES) is employed to create initial metrics of behavior coefficients. Using this technique, three distinct emergent swarm behaviors are evolved, and each behavior is investigated in terms of the ability of the adaptive swarming algorithm to achieve the desired emergent behavior by modifying the simple rules of each agent. Finally, each of the three behaviors is analyzed visually using a graphical representation of the simulation, and numerically, using a set of metrics developed for this investigation
