Adaptive Difference of Gaussian Algorithm for Coherent Line Drawing
Non-photorealistic rendering is a method of imitating hand-drawn images using computer as the tool. One of hand-drawn techniques used by artists is line drawing. This goal of this thesis is to produce a technique to create line drawing images from real life picture. Based on a previous technique called Flow-based Difference of Gaussian (FDoG), we try to improve the output image so that it will create more believable pictures, as it if were hand-drawn by an artist. FDoG has proven to be able to produce results with coherent and connected lines, but it fails to capture coarse details on isotropic areas in the image. Another technique in line drawing called Difference of Gaussian (DoG), which FDoG was based on, can produce better detail on isotropic areas. Combining these two techniques can create better results for both isotropic and anisotropic areas. We create an image segmentation technique using polarity to divide isotropic and anisotropic areas in the image. Using this segment, we then adaptively apply FDoG and DoG filters to each segment

A words-of-interest model of sketch representation for image retrieval
In this paper we propose a method for sketch-based image retrieval. Sketch is a magical medium which is capable of conveying semantic messages for user. Itâs in accordance with userâs cognitive psychology to retrieve images with sketch. In order to narrow down the semantic gap between the user and the images in database, we preprocess all the images into sketches by the coherent line drawing algorithm. During the process of sketches extraction, saliency maps are used to filter out the redundant background information, while preserve the important semantic information. We use a variant of Words-of-Interest model to retrieve relevant images for the user according to the query. Words-of-Interest (WoI) model is based on Bag-ofvisual Words (BoW) model, which has been proven successfully for information retrieval. Bag-of-Words ignores the spatial relationships among visual words, which are important for sketch representation. Our method takes advantage of the spatial information of the query to select words of interest. Experimental results demonstrate that our sketch-based retrieval method achieves a good tradeoff between retrieval accuracy and semantic representation of usersâ query

A predictor display to overcome time lag problems with remote control systems is discussed. The video picture is a (necessarily) time-delayed picture from the remote location, generated as a coherent frame (snapshot) so that all picture elements in a single scan are delayed the same. The computer-generated graphics is a line drawing of the present configuration of the manipulator arm, vehicle or other device. The latter is generated by using the same control signals which are sent to the remote manipulator (device) to drive a computer model of it. The computer model is drawn on the video display in exactly the same location as where it will actually be after a one-way time delay and where it will be seen to be on the video after one round-trip time delay. If one waits at least one round-trip delay without moving, both the graphics model and the video picture of the manipulator (device) are seen to coincide. The predictor technque proved to work well and was shown for time delays in the 1-3 second range to reduce completion times for a variety of manipulation tasks by 50-150 percent reliably
Pseudo noise code and data transmission method and apparatus
Pseudo noise ranging codes, having a predetermined chipping rate, and a pair of binary data sources, each having a bit rate no greater than one tenth the chipping rate, quadriphase, digitally modulate a suppressed carrier wave having a first frequency are examined. Two additional binary data sources, each having a bit rate that is not restricted by the chipping rate of the first carrier, quadriphase, digitally modulate a suppressed carrier wave having a second frequency. The first and second frequencies are only slightly displaced so that there is overlap in the frequency bands which modulate the two carriers. The two suppressed carrier waves are linearly combined and transmitted from a first station to a second station so that the amplitude of the transmitted first wave is controlled so as not to degrade the detectability of the second wave at the second station
Imaginaries of the ideal migrant worker : a Lacanian interpretation

The fantasies of the âidealâ worker created by recruiters have a particular hold on migrant subjectivity, but they often hide inconsistencies and slippages implicit within the fabric of recruitment discourse and practice. By drawing on the notions of fantasy and desire as developed by Jacques Lacan, this paper analyses the determination of subjectivity in a migration context and explores both unconscious and conscious processes of identification. On the basis of an analysis of drawings sketched by respondents during qualitative interviews conducted in Latvia, it challenges narrower assumptions about migrantsâ search behaviour and stable expectations of labour migration, and exposes the split and contested nature of migrant selfhood.It concludes with conceptual observations about the complex process of identification and the unachievable figure of the âidealâ worker.PostprintPeer reviewe
On the Persistent Shape and Coherence of Pulsating Auroral Patches
The pulsating aurora covers a broad range of fluctuating shapes that are
poorly characterized. The purpose of this paper is therefore to provide
objective and quantitative measures of the extent to which pulsating auroral
patches maintain their shape, drift and fluctuate in a coherent fashion. We
present results from a careful analysis of pulsating auroral patches using
all-sky cameras. We have identified four well-defined individual patches that
we follow in the patch frame of reference. In this way we avoid the space-time
ambiguity which complicates rocket and satellite measurements. We find that the
shape of the patches is remarkably persistent with 85-100% of the patch being
repeated for 4.5-8.5 min. Each of the three largest patches has a temporal
correlation with a negative dependence on distance, and thus does not fluctuate
in a coherent fashion. A time-delayed response within the patches indicates
that the so-called streaming mode might explain the incoherency. The patches
appear to drift differently from the SuperDARN-determined
X convection velocity.
However, in a nonrotating reference frame the patches drift with 230-287 m/s in
a north eastward direction, which is what typically could be expected for the
convection return flow
