Effect of vicarious fear learning on children's heart rate responses and attentional bias for novel animals
Research with children has shown that vicarious learning can result in changes to 2 of Lang's (1968) 3 anxiety response systems: subjective report and behavioral avoidance. The current study extended this research by exploring the effect of vicarious learning on physiological responses (Lang's final response system) and attentional bias. The study used Askew and Field's (2007) vicarious learning procedure and demonstrated fear-related increases in children's cognitive, behavioral, and physiological responses. Cognitive and behavioral changes were retested 1 week and 1 month later, and remained elevated. In addition, a visual search task demonstrated that fear-related vicarious learning creates an attentional bias for novel animals, which is moderated by increases in fear beliefs during learning. The findings demonstrate that vicarious learning leads to lasting changes in all 3 of Lang's anxiety response systems and is sufficient to create attentional bias to threat in children
Implicit Measures of Lostness and Success in Web Navigation
In two studies, we investigated the ability of a variety of structural and temporal measures computed from a web navigation path to predict lostness and task success. The user’s task was to find requested target information on specified websites. The web navigation measures were based on counts of visits to web pages and other statistical properties of the web usage graph (such as compactness, stratum, and similarity to the optimal path). Subjective lostness was best predicted by similarity to the optimal path and time on task. The best overall predictor of success on individual tasks was similarity to the optimal path, but other predictors were sometimes superior depending on the particular web navigation task. These measures can be used to diagnose user navigational problems and to help identify problems in website design
Disconnected aging: cerebral white matter integrity and age-related differences in cognition.
Cognition arises as a result of coordinated processing among distributed brain regions and disruptions to communication within these neural networks can result in cognitive dysfunction. Cortical disconnection may thus contribute to the declines in some aspects of cognitive functioning observed in healthy aging. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is ideally suited for the study of cortical disconnection as it provides indices of structural integrity within interconnected neural networks. The current review summarizes results of previous DTI aging research with the aim of identifying consistent patterns of age-related differences in white matter integrity, and of relationships between measures of white matter integrity and behavioral performance as a function of adult age. We outline a number of future directions that will broaden our current understanding of these brain-behavior relationships in aging. Specifically, future research should aim to (1) investigate multiple models of age-brain-behavior relationships; (2) determine the tract-specificity versus global effect of aging on white matter integrity; (3) assess the relative contribution of normal variation in white matter integrity versus white matter lesions to age-related differences in cognition; (4) improve the definition of specific aspects of cognitive functioning related to age-related differences in white matter integrity using information processing tasks; and (5) combine multiple imaging modalities (e.g., resting-state and task-related functional magnetic resonance imaging; fMRI) with DTI to clarify the role of cerebral white matter integrity in cognitive aging
Effects of Selection Systems on Job Search Decisions
On the basis of Gilliland\u27s (1993) model of selection system fairness, the present study investigated the relationships between selection procedures, perceived selection system fairness, and job search decisions in both hypothetical and actual organizations. We conducted two studies to test the model. In Study 1, we used an experimental method to examine job seekers\u27 perceptions of, and reactions to, five widely used selection procedures. Results suggested that applicants viewed employment interviews and cognitive ability tests as more job related than biographical inventories (biodata), personality tests, and drug tests, and that job relatedness significantly affected fairness perceptions, which in turn affected job search decisions. Study 2 examined the hypothesized relationships between the selection systems and job seekers\u27 pursuit of actual, relevant organizations. Results from both studies offer support for the hypothesized model, suggesting that selection tests have differential effects on perceived selection system validity and fairness, which affect subsequent job search decisions

The role of human factors in stereotyping behavior and perception of digital library users: A robust clustering approach
To deliver effective personalization for digital library users, it is necessary to identify which human factors are most relevant in determining the behavior and perception of these users. This paper examines three key human factors: cognitive styles, levels of expertise and gender differences, and utilizes three individual clustering techniques: k-means, hierarchical clustering and fuzzy clustering to understand user behavior and perception. Moreover, robust clustering, capable of correcting the bias of individual clustering techniques, is used to obtain a deeper understanding. The robust clustering approach produced results that highlighted the relevance of cognitive style for user behavior, i.e., cognitive style dominates and justifies each of the robust clusters created. We also found that perception was mainly determined by the level of expertise of a user. We conclude that robust clustering is an effective technique to analyze user behavior and perception
Ongoing Emergence: A Core Concept in Epigenetic Robotics
We propose ongoing emergence as a core concept in
epigenetic robotics. Ongoing emergence refers to the
continuous development and integration of new skills
and is exhibited when six criteria are satisfied: (1)
continuous skill acquisition, (2) incorporation of new
skills with existing skills, (3) autonomous development
of values and goals, (4) bootstrapping of initial skills, (5)
stability of skills, and (6) reproducibility. In this paper
we: (a) provide a conceptual synthesis of ongoing
emergence based on previous theorizing, (b) review
current research in epigenetic robotics in light of ongoing
emergence, (c) provide prototypical examples of ongoing
emergence from infant development, and (d) outline
computational issues relevant to creating robots

Gaze Distribution Analysis and Saliency Prediction Across Age Groups
Knowledge of the human visual system helps to develop better computational
models of visual attention. State-of-the-art models have been developed to
mimic the visual attention system of young adults that, however, largely ignore
the variations that occur with age. In this paper, we investigated how visual
scene processing changes with age and we propose an age-adapted framework that
helps to develop a computational model that can predict saliency across
different age groups. Our analysis uncovers how the explorativeness of an
observer varies with age, how well saliency maps of an age group agree with
fixation points of observers from the same or different age groups, and how age
influences the center bias. We analyzed the eye movement behavior of 82
observers belonging to four age groups while they explored visual scenes.
Explorativeness was quantified in terms of the entropy of a saliency map, and
area under the curve (AUC) metrics was used to quantify the agreement analysis
and the center bias. These results were used to develop age adapted saliency
models. Our results suggest that the proposed age-adapted saliency model
outperforms existing saliency models in predicting the regions of interest
across age groups

Depression, anxiety, and within-person variability in adults aged 18 to 85 years
Mild depression and anxiety were investigated in relation to measures of within-person (WP) variability and mean RT from psychomotor, executive function, visual search, and word recognition tasks in a continuous age range (18 to 85 years, M = 50.33, SD = 20.37) of 300 community-dwelling adults. Structural equation modeling identified a significant Age x Depression interaction in relation to visual search for measures of WP variability but not for mean RT. Older more depressed adults exhibited greater variability. WP variability in executive function and other cognitive constructs covaried, and the significant Age x Depression interaction with visual search was accounted for by WP variability in executive control. The findings suggest that age-, and depression-related reductions in attentional resources may contribute to increased variability in visual search, and that variability in executive control may be the mechanism underlying these effects.This article may not exactly replicate the final version published in the APA journal.
