Cognitive Orthogonal Precoder for Two-tiered Networks Deployment
In this work, the problem of cross-tier interference in a two-tiered
(macro-cell and cognitive small-cells) network, under the complete spectrum
sharing paradigm, is studied. A new orthogonal precoder transmit scheme for the
small base stations, called multi-user Vandermonde-subspace frequency division
multiplexing (MU-VFDM), is proposed. MU-VFDM allows several cognitive small
base stations to coexist with legacy macro-cell receivers, by nulling the
small- to macro-cell cross-tier interference, without any cooperation between
the two tiers. This cleverly designed cascaded precoder structure, not only
cancels the cross-tier interference, but avoids the co-tier interference for
the small-cell network. The achievable sum-rate of the small-cell network,
satisfying the interference cancelation requirements, is evaluated for perfect
and imperfect channel state information at the transmitter. Simulation results
for the cascaded MU-VFDM precoder show a comparable performance to that of
state-of-the-art dirty paper coding technique, for the case of a dense cellular
layout. Finally, a comparison between MU-VFDM and a standard complete spectrum
separation strategy is proposed. Promising gains in terms of achievable
sum-rate are shown for the two-tiered network w.r.t. the traditional bandwidth
management approach.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted and to appear in IEEE Journal on

Surrogate modeling based cognitive decision engine for optimization of WLAN performance
Due to the rapid growth of wireless networks and the dearth of the electromagnetic spectrum, more interference is imposed to the wireless terminals which constrains their performance. In order to mitigate such performance degradation, this paper proposes a novel experimentally verified surrogate model based cognitive decision engine which aims at performance optimization of IEEE 802.11 links. The surrogate model takes the current state and configuration of the network as input and makes a prediction of the QoS parameter that would assist the decision engine to steer the network towards the optimal configuration. The decision engine was applied in two realistic interference scenarios where in both cases, utilization of the cognitive decision engine significantly outperformed the case where the decision engine was not deployed
Exact Outage Performance Analysis of Multiuser Multi-relay Spectrum Sharing Cognitive Networks
In this paper, we investigate the outage performance of dual-hop multiuser multi-relay cognitive radio networks under spectrum sharing constraints. Using an efficient relay-destination selection scheme, the exact and asymptotic closed-form expressions for the outage probability are derived. From these expressions it is indicated that the achieved diversity order is only determined by the number of secondary user (SU) relays and destinations, and equals to M+N (where M and N are the number of destination nodes and relay nodes, respectively). Further, we find that the coding gain of the SU network will be affected by the interference threshold at the primary user (PU) receiver. Specifically, as the increases of the interference threshold, the coding gain of the considered network approaches to that of the multiuser multi-relay system in the non-cognitive network. Finally, our study is corroborated by representative numerical examples
Robust Power and Subcarrier Allocation for OFDM-based Cognitive Radio Networks Considering Spectrum Sensing Uncertainties
‎In this paper‎, ‎we address power and subcarrier allocation for cooperative cognitive radio (CR) networks in the presence of spectrum sensing errors‎. ‎First‎, ‎we derive the mutual interference of primary and secondary networks affecting each other by taking into account spectrum sensing errors‎. ‎Then‎, ‎taking into account the interference constraint imposed by the cognitive network to the primary user and the power budget constraint of cognitive network‎, ‎we maximize the achievable data rates of secondary users‎. ‎Besides‎, ‎in a multi secondary user scenario‎, ‎we propose a suboptimal but low complexity power and subcarrier allocation algorithm to solve the formulated optimization problem‎. ‎Our numerical results indicate that the proposed power loading scheme increases the cognitive achievable data rates compared to classical power loading algorithms that do not consider spectrum sensing errors‎
Effect of Primary Interference on Cognitive Relay Network
Cognitive relay network is a method for optimizing frequency spectrum utilization. What’s important in these networks is to transmit data such that none of primary and secondary users cause destructive interference to other users. Although primary interference affect cognitive network performance, but is neglected in former researches. In this paper, we show cognitive network performance by calculating outage probability. We consider both primary and secondary interference links. Finally, our study is corroborated by representative numerical example. Simulation results demonstrate that increasing interference threshold increase outage probability and increasing data transmit rate cause outage probability increase
Mixed Power Control Strategies for Cognitive Radio Networks under SINR and Interference Temperature Constraints
Without consideration of the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and frequent information exchange, traditional power control algorithms can not always satisfy SINR requirements of secondary users (SUs) and primary users (PUs) in cognitive radio networks. In this paper, a distributed power control problem for maximizing total throughput of SUs is studied subject to the SINR constraints of SUs and the interference constraints of PUs. To reduce message exchange among SUs, two improved methods are obtained by dual decomposition approaches. For a large-scale network, an average interference constraint is presented at the cost of performance degradation. For a small-scale network, a weighted interference constraint with fairness consideration is proposed to obtain good performance. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is superior to ADCPC and TPCG algorithms
