Power and Bandwidth Efficient Coded Modulation for Linear Gaussian Channels
A scheme for power- and bandwidth-efficient communication on the linear Gaussian channel is proposed. A scenario is assumed in which the channel is stationary in time and the channel characteristics are known at the transmitter. Using interleaving, the linear Gaussian channel with its intersymbol interference is decomposed into a set of memoryless subchannels. Each subchannel is further decomposed into parallel binary memoryless channels, to enable the use of binary codes. Code bits from these parallel binary channels are mapped to higher-order near-Gaussian distributed constellation symbols. At the receiver, the code bits are detected and decoded in a multistage fashion. The scheme is demonstrated on a simple instance of the linear Gaussian channel. Simulations show that the scheme achieves reliable communication at 1.2 dB away from the Shannon capacity using a moderate number of subchannels
Error Exponents for Variable-length Block Codes with Feedback and Cost Constraints
Variable-length block-coding schemes are investigated for discrete memoryless
channels with ideal feedback under cost constraints. Upper and lower bounds are
found for the minimum achievable probability of decoding error as
a function of constraints R, \AV, and on the transmission rate,
average cost, and average block length respectively. For given and \AV,
the lower and upper bounds to the exponent are
asymptotically equal as . The resulting reliability
function, , as a
function of and \AV, is concave in the pair (R, \AV) and generalizes
the linear reliability function of Burnashev to include cost constraints. The
results are generalized to a class of discrete-time memoryless channels with
arbitrary alphabets, including additive Gaussian noise channels with amplitude
and power constraints
Constellation Optimization in the Presence of Strong Phase Noise
In this paper, we address the problem of optimizing signal constellations for
strong phase noise. The problem is investigated by considering three
optimization formulations, which provide an analytical framework for
constellation design. In the first formulation, we seek to design
constellations that minimize the symbol error probability (SEP) for an
approximate ML detector in the presence of phase noise. In the second
formulation, we optimize constellations in terms of mutual information (MI) for
the effective discrete channel consisting of phase noise, additive white
Gaussian noise, and the approximate ML detector. To this end, we derive the MI
of this discrete channel. Finally, we optimize constellations in terms of the
MI for the phase noise channel. We give two analytical characterizations of the
MI of this channel, which are shown to be accurate for a wide range of
signal-to-noise ratios and phase noise variances. For each formulation, we
present a detailed analysis of the optimal constellations and their performance
in the presence of strong phase noise. We show that the optimal constellations
significantly outperform conventional constellations and those proposed in the
literature in terms of SEP, error floors, and MI.Comment: 10 page, 10 figures, Accepted to IEEE Trans. Commu
Turbo-Detected Unequal Protection MPEG-4 Wireless Video Telephony using Multi-Level Coding, Trellis Coded Modulation and Space-Time Trellis Coding
Most multimedia source signals are capable of tolerating lossy, rather than lossless delivery to the human eye, ear and other human sensors. The corresponding lossy and preferably low-delay multimedia source codecs however exhibit unequal error sensitivity, which is not the case for Shannon’s ideal entropy codec. This paper proposes a jointly optimised turbo transceiver design capable of providing unequal error protection for MPEG-4 coding aided wireless video telephony. The transceiver investigated consists of space-time trellis coding (STTC) invoked for the sake of mitigating the effects of fading, in addition to bandwidth efficient trellis coded modulation or bit-interleaved coded modulation, combined with a multi-level coding scheme employing either two different-rate non-systematic convolutional codes (NSCs) or two recursive systematic convolutional codes for yielding a twin-class unequal-protection. A single-class protection based benchmark scheme combining STTC and NSC is used for comparison with the unequal-protection scheme advocated. The video performance of the various schemes is evaluated when communicating over uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels. It was found that the proposed scheme requires about 2.8 dBs lower transmit power than the benchmark scheme in the context of the MPEG-4 videophone transceiver at a similar decoding complexity
