    Code generator matrices as RNG conditioners

    We quantify precisely the distribution of the output of a binary random number generator (RNG) after conditioning with a binary linear code generator matrix by showing the connection between the Walsh spectrum of the resulting random variable and the weight distribution of the code. Previously known bounds on the performance of linear binary codes as entropy extractors can be derived by considering generator matrices as a selector of a subset of that spectrum. We also extend this framework to the case of non-binary codes

    Quality-of-service management in IP networks

    Quality of Service (QoS) in Internet Protocol (IF) Networks has been the subject of active research over the past two decades. Integrated Services (IntServ) and Differentiated Services (DiffServ) QoS architectures have emerged as proposed standards for resource allocation in IF Networks. These two QoS architectures support the need for multiple traffic queuing systems to allow for resource partitioning for heterogeneous applications making use of the networks. There have been a number of specifications or proposals for the number of traffic queuing classes (Class of Service (CoS)) that will support integrated services in IF Networks, but none has provided verification in the form of analytical or empirical investigation to prove that its specification or proposal will be optimum. Despite the existence of the two standard QoS architectures and the large volume of research work that has been carried out on IF QoS, its deployment still remains elusive in the Internet.     Numerical evaluation of aerodynamic roughness of the built environment and complex terrain

    Aerodynamic drag in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) is affected by the structure and density of obstacles (surface roughness) and nature of the terrain (topography). In building codes and standards, average roughness is usually determined somewhat subjectively by examination of aerial photographs. For detailed wind mapping, boundary layer wind tunnel (BLWT) testing is usually recommended. This may not be cost effective for many projects, in which case numerical studies become good alternatives. This thesis examines Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for evaluation of aerodynamic roughness of the built environment and complex terrain. The present study started from development of an in-house CFD software tailored for ABL simulations. A three-dimensional finite-volume code was developed using flexible polyhedral elements as building blocks. The program is parallelized using MPI to run on clusters of processors so that micro-scale simulations can be conducted quickly. The program can also utilize the power of latest technology in high performance computing, namely GPUs. Various turbulence models including mixing-length, RANS, and LES models are implemented, and their suitability for ABL simulations assessed. Then the effect of surface roughness alone on wind profiles is assessed using CFD. Cases with various levels of complexity are considered including simplified models with roughness blocks of different arrangement, multiple roughness patches, semi-idealized urban model, and real built environment. Comparison with BLWT data for the first three cases showed good agreement thereby justifying explicit three-dimensional numerical approach. Due to lack of validation data, the real built environment case served only to demonstrate use of CFD for such purposes. Finally, the effect of topographic features on wind profiles was investigated using CFD. This work extends prior work done by the research team on multiple idealized two-dimensional topographic features to more elaborate three-dimensional simulations. It is found that two-dimensional simulations overestimate speed up over crests of hills and also show larger recirculation zones. The current study also emphasized turbulence characterization behind hills. Finally a real complex terrain case of the well-known Askervein hill was simulated and the results validated against published field observations. In general the results obtained from the current simulations compared well with those reported in literature

    Research objectives. Psychophysical acceleration threshold is a tool for detecting deficits in dynamic postural control. Our lab has shown differences in the acceleration threshold among young adults, elderly adults, and elderly adults with diabetes. Electromyography, Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments, and hearing tests investigate the underlying physiological mechanisms for the detriments in postural control. Due to peri-sway perturbations, the motion of a person\u27s sway affects the signal to noise ratio for perturbed stance. Since increases in sway range accompany postural instabilities, sway entrainment will allow us to investigate changes in acceleration threshold at different points in sway. The center of pressure, observed for entrainment, only changes due to rotations about joints, specifically the ankle. The current method to model rotation about the ankle is a single orthogonal joint, and therefore inaccurate. Methods. The SLIP-FALLS-STEPm Platform has lead to the ability to accurately measure and observe interactions in the range of postural sway. The combination of the platform with other testing modalities such as camera tracking systems, force mats, and accelerometers will allow for a comprehensive testing scheme. The new scheme can be combined with the induced sway produced by a sub-threshold sinusoidal entrainment process. The nonorthogonal modelling is programmed in Matlab®. Results. For constant displacements, anterior accelerations thresholds via two-alternate forced choice (2AFC) showed differences in postural stability in mature, diabetic individuals with peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and those who are neurally intact (DNI) compared to healthy mature adults (HMA), which corresponded with previous results of lateral perturbations. Both DNI and DPN had significantly higher thresholds for acceleration via 2AFC than HMA at 1 and 4 mm displacements (p \u3c 0.01 and p Conclusion. The anterior acceleration thresholds show that peripheral neuropathy is not the sole cause for postural instability with diabetes. The ability to control the motion of sway will allow us to describe acceleration threshold throughout the range of sway. With a realistic ankle model, we will be able to better simulate postural dynamics

    El proceso de atomización desde una vena o lámina líquida hasta multitud de gotas dispersas en un medio gaseoso ha sido un fenómeno de interés desde hace varias décadas, especialmente en el campo de los motores de combustión interna alternativos. Multitud de estudios experimentales han sido publicados al respecto, pues una buena mezcla de aire-combustible asegura una evaporación y combustión mucho más eficientes, aumentando la potencia del motor y reduciendo la cantidad de contaminantes emitidos. Con el auge de las técnicas computacionales, muchos modelos han sido desarrollados para estudiar este proceso de atomización y mezcla. Uno de los últimos modelos que han aparecido es el llamado ELSA (Eulerian-Lagrangian Spray Atomization), que utiliza un modelo Euleriano para la parte densa del chorro y cambia a un modelo Lagrangiano cuando la concentración de líquido es suficientemente pequeña, aprovechando de esta manera las ventajas de ambos. En el presente trabajo se ha desarrollado un modelo puramente Euleriano para estudiar la influencia de la geometría interna de la tobera de inyección en el proceso de atomización y mezcla. Se ha estudiado únicamente el proceso de inyección diésel. Este modelo permite resolver en un único dominio el flujo interno y el externo, evitando así las comunes simplificaciones y limitaciones de la interpolación entre ambos dominios resueltos por separado. Los resultados actuales son prometedores, el modelo predice con un error aceptable la penetración del chorro, el flujo másico y de cantidad de movimiento, los perfiles de velocidad y concentración, así como otros parámetros característicos del chorro.Martí Gómez-Aldaraví, P.
