    The Practice of Engagement without Recognition under International Law: A Tool for Combatting Human Trafficking

    This article argues that, even in the absence of international recognition, international law can make a real and meaningful impact in de facto states. Such impact can come about through engagement without recognition, which should be understood, not as a shadowy practice that takes place in the fringes of international law, but as a strategy that is fully compatible with international legal standards. The article makes this argument by relying on a detailed analysis of relevant case law of the European Court of Human Rights. It further proposes that reconceptualizing engagement without recognition can have important practical consequences in the fight against human trafficking, which has received regrettably limited attention by policymakers in de facto states

    In his dissertation, Mr. Goilo developed a cutting-edge theoretical framework for an Anthropology of Information. This study compares information in the context of modernity in Amsterdam and coloniality in Curaçao through the making process of monitors and develops five ways to understand how information can act towards sustainable futures. The research also discusses how the two contexts, that is modernity and coloniality, have been in informational symbiosis for centuries which is producing negative informational side effects within the age of the Anthropocene. By exploring the modernity-coloniality symbiosis of information, the author explains how scholars, policymakers, and data-analysts can act through historical and structural roots of contemporary global inequities related to the production and distribution of information. Ultimately, the five theses propose conditions towards the collective production of knowledge towards a more sustainable planet

    Indie encounters: exploring indie music socialising in China

    Indie music, a genre deeply rooted in rock and punk music, is renowned for its independence from major commercial record labels. It has emerged as a choice for music consumers seeking alternatives to mainstream popular music, catering to a niche music preference. The minority nature of indie music not only provides its lovers with a profound space for individual expression and a sense of collective belonging but also introduces other challenges into their social lives. Recently, the field of music sociology has proposed a more diverse perspective to observe and analyse the intricate role of music for individuals and society. In this context, regarding Chinese indie music lovers with niche music preferences, how their indie music practices integrate into their social lives and how they navigate their niche music tastes have become worthwhile topics of exploration. Drawing on interviews with 31 Chinese indie music lovers and extensive online ethnography, this thesis investigates how Chinese indie music lovers comprehend and engage with indie music, and how the power of indie music shapes them and their social behaviours. I employ the theoretical framework of ‘music in action’ (Hennion, 2001; DeNora, 2011, 2016) and symbolic interactionism (Mead, 1934; Goffman, 1959; Blumer, 1969) to examine the dynamic and multifaceted roles of indie music in the social lives of Chinese indie music lovers. I develop a concept of ‘music socialising’ to delve into several key aspects of music lovers’ social practices. I contend that through various forms of musical activities such as music selection, live music attendance, and digital practices, indie music lovers exhibit strategic and reflexive characteristics in their music practices. These practices actively contribute to constructing and maintaining self and identity, negotiating social ties, and forming and mediating collectivity within a broader social landscape. It is through these processes that the music practices of Chinese indie music lovers are endowed with meanings, thereby shaping their social reality. This thesis presents a rich and nuanced picture of the social experiences of Chinese indie music lovers, uncovering the transformative power of their indie music practices. It presents a compelling argument for the significance of music as a social agency, highlighting the complex interactions between music, individuals, and society. By bridging theoretical insights with rich empirical data, this thesis contributes to our understanding of the socio-cultural dimensions of music, offering fresh perspectives on the role of indie music in contemporary Chinese society

    Tracing the Creative Influence of Samuel Beckett’s ‘Psychology Notes’: The ‘Three Novels’ and Krapp’s Last Tape

    Sammendrag Avhandlingens hovedargument er at notatkorpuset om psykologiske og spesielt psykoanalytiske emner som Samuel Beckett utarbeidet i 1934-1935 mens han var i terapi hos Wilfred Bion representerer en sentral og vedvarende innflytelse pĂ„ hans litterĂŠre verk. Den umiddelbare anvendelsen av disse psykologinotatene i arbeidet med romanen Murphy er velkjent, men avhandlingen gjennomgĂ„r denne opprinnelige kreative bruken pĂ„ nytt for Ă„ vise hvordan Beckett etablerer en form for parodisk overdrevet bruk av det lĂŠrebokaktige sprĂ„ket i mange av kildene som han hentet sine notater fra. Dette indikerer en kritisk avstandstagen fra psykoanalysen som disiplin, som ogsĂ„ fĂžrte til en plutselig avslutning av det terapeutiske forholdet til Bion in 1935. De to fĂžrste kapitlene i avhandlingen diskuterer konteksten for komposisjonen av psykologinotatene og diskuterer en rekke kreativt sentrale tematikker for Beckett. En ledetrĂ„d for diskusjonen er at Becketts tilnĂŠrming til det psykoanalytiske lĂŠreboksprĂ„ket fungerte bĂ„de tiltrekkende og motstandsgivende for ham som forfatter. Becketts tekster iscenesetter en avvisning av det psykoanalytiske sprĂ„ket som et feilslĂ„tt medium for Ă„ skrive om selvet, gjennom sin ironiske undergraving av psykoanalysens kognitive, autoritetsbaserte og terapeutiske utgangspunkt. Implikasjonene av dette utvikles i avhandlingen gjennom en nĂŠrlesing av romanene Molloy, Malone meurt/Malone Dies and L’Innommable/The Unnamable, og det korte teaterstykket Krapp’s Last Tape. I denne lesningen behandles Becketts psykologinotater som genetisk kildemateriale som fortsatt ble anvendt kreativt lenge etter de opprinnelig ble komponert. Avhandlingen tar utgangspunkt i en mest mulig empirisk etterprĂžvbar og manuskriptgenetisk tilnĂŠrming til kildene, med utstrakt bruk av Samuel Beckett Digital Manuscript Project og andre arkivressurser som stĂžtte for sin argumentasjon. Men et pragmatisk forhold til behandlingen av tekstlig innflytelse som gĂ„r utover det som kan fĂžres sikre bevis for er ogsĂ„ nĂždvendig, for en viss grad av usikkerhet er umulig Ă„ unngĂ„. Likevel fastslĂ„r avhandlingen at en nylesning av disse verkene av Beckett med utgangspunkt i hans egne psykologinotater kan bĂ„de utvide og korrigere fokuset i den eksisterende faglitteraturen. Videre har det kritiske fokuset og opptreningen som denne avhandlingen presenterer ogsĂ„ et potensiale til Ă„ kunne generere en ny litteraturkritisk tilnĂŠrming til alle verkene i Becketts karriere som ble skrevet etter psykologinotatene.Abstract This study argues that the corpus of notes on psychological and especially psychoanalytic topics composed by Samuel Beckett in 1934-1935 during his therapy with Wilfred Bion represents a crucial and continuous creative influence on his literary work. While the immediate use of the ‘Psychology Notes’ in the writing of Murphy is well established, it is revisited here to suggest that this initial creative deployment is characterized by a parodic over-indulgence in the ‘textbook’ language of the sources Beckett was drawing on. This indicates a critical distancing from the discipline of psychoanalysis that also manifested itself in a sudden disruption of his therapy with Wilfred Bion in 1935. Drawing on the original context of the composition of the Notes, and developing a taxonomy of creatively important themes for Beckett, the first two chapters of the thesis trace a formative attraction-repulsion ambivalence in Beckett’s approach to the use of psychoanalytic textbook language in his writing. On the one hand, there is a shared obsession with ‘abjection’ between Beckett’s texts and the discipline of psychoanalysis, whereas on the other, the commitment to cure, control and meaning in psychoanalysis is being resisted in Beckett’s texts. Beckett’s later texts stage the rejection and failure of the psychoanalytic language as medium of writing the ‘self’ by ironically subverting its cognitive, authoritative and therapeutic purposes. This argument is developed through detailed close readings of the ‘Three Novels’ (Molloy, Malone meurt/Malone Dies and L’Innommable/The Unnamable) and the short play Krapp’s Last Tape, treating the ‘Psychology Notes’ as genetic source material that continued to be actively deployed long after its initial composition and creative impact. While the thesis is based on an empirical, genetic approach, making extensive use of the Samuel Beckett Digital Manuscript Project and other archival sources, its approach is also pragmatic in its approach to influence, recognizing that conclusive evidence of intertextual relationships is not always possible to establish. Nonetheless, re-reading these Beckett works with the Notes to hand can both expand upon and correct the emphases of previous scholarship on these texts. Ultimately, the critical focus and training provided by this thesis is therefore intended to provide a scholarly tool for re-engaging all of Beckett’s post-Notes work.Doktorgradsavhandlin

    Die Professionalisierung des GebĂ€rdensprachdolmetschens ist ein kontingenter, fortdauernder und kompetitiver Prozess, bei dem Grenzziehungsarbeit eine zentrale Rolle spielt. Die Autorin rekonstruiert in ihrer theoretisch fundierten Untersuchung dessen Entwicklung in Österreich seit dem 19. Jahrhundert, zeigt institutionelle Bedingungen der Professionalisierung auf und gibt Einsichten in Wahrnehmungsmuster, Handlungslogiken und Entscheidungsprozesse der Akteur*innen.     The impact of disappearances on Mexican families: A psychoanalytic approach

    “The War Against Drugs” initiated by former Mexican President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, led to a sudden rise in the number of people arrested, detained, or abducted against their will by organized groups which refused to disclose the fate or whereabouts of these persons, a situation known as ‘disappearances’. Relatives of the disappeared comment that people in Mexico disappear as if the earth had swallowed them. In 2021, official records showed that a total of 90,035 people had been reported disappeared. Relatives of the disappeared who continuously search for their loved one, struggle to successfully find their relative, due to a lack of forensic, and governmental support The sudden loss of their relative added to the factors previously mentioned, has often a traumatic impact on the relatives. Socio-political research conducted on American populations, conceptualised disappearances as an ambiguous loss, which can have more severe psychological consequences than those following the death of a loved one. None of the studies on disappearance was conducted on the Mexican population. This study is informed by psychoanalytic thinking applied to in-depth interviews of relatives of disappeared in Mexico who were actively searching for their relatives. Following the results of a Pilot Study, a brief interview was conducted with members of society who lived in the same states as the relatives. The study describes the particularities of the trauma caused by disappearance. It also found that the relatives of the disappeared suffer from negative thoughts about the world and themselves, often develop somatic illnesses, see their mental state deteriorate, and experience a continuous feeling of criminalisation. Future research is needed to deepen the understanding of the psychic effects disappearances have on the relatives who search for their loved ones
