Business strategy driven IT systems for engineer-to-order and make-to-order manufacturing enterprises
This thesis reports research into the specification and implementation of an Information
Technology (IT) Route Map. The purpose of the Route Map is to enable rapid design
and deployment of IT solutions capable of semi-automating business processes in a
manufacturing enterprise. The Map helps structure transition processes involved in
âidentification of key business strategies and design of business processesâ and âchoice
of enterprise systems and supporting implementation techniquesâ. Common limitations
of current Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are observed and incorporated
as Route Map implications and constraints.
Scope of investigation is targeted at Small to Medium Sized Enterprises
(SMEs) that employ Engineer-To-Order (ETO) and Make-To-Order (MTO) business
processes. However, a feature of the Route Map is that it takes into account
contemporary business concerns related to âglobalisationâ, âmergers and acquisitionsâ
and âtypical resource constraint problems of SMEsâ.
In the course of the research a âBusiness Strategy Driven IT System Conceptâ
was conceived and examined. The main purpose of this concept is to promote the
development of agile and innovative business activity in SMEs. The Road Map
encourages strategy driven solutions to be (a) specified based on the use of emerging
enterprise engineering theories and (b) implemented and changed using componentbased
systems design and composition techniques.
Part-evaluation of the applicability and capabilities of the Road Map has been
carried out by conducting industrial survey and case study work. This assesses
requirements of real industrial problems and solutions. The evaluation work has also
been enabled by conducting a pilot implementation of the thesis concepts at the
premises of a partner SME
NASA Technology Plan 1998
This NASA Strategic Plan describes an ambitious, exciting vision for the Agency across all its Strategic Enterprises that addresses a series of fundamental questions of science and research. This vision is so challenging that it literally depends on the success of an aggressive, cutting-edge advanced technology development program. The objective of this plan is to describe the NASA-wide technology program in a manner that provides not only the content of ongoing and planned activities, but also the rationale and justification for these activities in the context of NASA's future needs. The scope of this plan is Agencywide, and it includes technology investments to support all major space and aeronautics program areas, but particular emphasis is placed on longer term strategic technology efforts that will have broad impact across the spectrum of NASA activities and perhaps beyond. Our goal is to broaden the understanding of NASA technology programs and to encourage greater participation from outside the Agency. By relating technology goals to anticipated mission needs, we hope to stimulate additional innovative approaches to technology challenges and promote more cooperative programs with partners outside NASA who share common goals. We also believe that this will increase the transfer of NASA-sponsored technology into nonaerospace applications, resulting in an even greater return on the investment in NASA

THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF LARGE ENTERPRISES IN BULGARIA â CHARACTERISTICS AND PROBLEMS
An information infrastructure is part of the overall infrastructure of enterprises. It refers to hardware, software, data management technologies, network and telecommunication technologies and services as well as the staff involved in the management of provided services.
The aim of this article is to elucidate the characteristics of information infrastructure and related issues in the era of digital transformation. In terms of theoretical tasks, this implies defining the concept of "information infrastructure" and identifying opportunities for its development. Practical tasks relate to analyzing some of the problems that a large Bulgarian enterprise is facing in terms of its information infrastructure and proposing methods for assessing the costs of the information infrastructure in the enterprise. Our research focuses on âSparky Eltosâ AD in Lovech and suggests some practical guidelines for analyzing problems and offering adequate solutions
Monitoring and Information Alignment in Pursuit of an IoT-Enabled Self-Sustainable Interoperability
To remain competitive with big corporations, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often need to be more dynamic, adapt to new business situations, react faster, and thereby survive in todayâs global economy. To do so, SMEs normally seek to create consortiums, thus gaining access to new and more opportunities. However, this strategy may also lead to complications. Due to the different sources of enterprise models and semantics, organizations are experiencing difficulties in seamlessly exchanging vital information via electronic means. In their attempt to address this issue, most seek to achieve interoperability by establishing peer-to-peer mappings with different business partners, or by using neutral data standards to regulate communications in optimized networks. Moreover, systems are more and more dynamic, frequently changing to answer new customerâs requirements, causing new interoperability problems and a reduction of efficiency. Another situation that is constantly changing is the devices used in the enterprises, as the Enterprise Information Systems, devices are used to register internal data, and to be used to monitor several aspects. These devices are constantly changing, following the evolution and growth of the market. So, it is important to monitor these devices and doing a model representation of them. This dissertation proposes a self-sustainable interoperable framework to monitor existing enterprise information systems and their devices, monitor the device/enterprise network for changes and automatically detecting model changes. With this, network harmonization disruptions are detected in a timely way, and possible solutions are suggested to regain the interoperable status, thus enhancing robustness for reaching sustainability of business networks along time
Systems approach to document management
The scientific field of Document Management within companies and organizations is very important and in this paper is delivered a systemic approach in both theoretical and empirical level. The study consists of two stages; first is the theoretical analysis of document management and systems and second is the empirical approach by developing and implementing specific strategic and operational planning in a real document management project. In the first stage the definitions of Administration (Management) and Document and the approach the Document Management theories are analyzed. Subsequently, the concept of document management, highlighting the benefits and other elements which made it historically significant and operationally necessary are presented. In the second stage a specific document management project is presented aiming to create an electronic library using document management systems (DMS). Examples of working libraries are illustrated, using DMS in a national and international level. The strategic planning, SWOT & PESTEL analysis and the operational planning of the project is explained. Additionally, the project management plan follows, showing its four stages, study, design, implementation and delivery. Specifically in step two, the stakeholders of the project and their relationships with the using the Design and Control Systemic Methodology (DCSYM) are depicted and the implementation of the project through the development of dynamic simulation of an intelligible model using VENSIM software, representing the main production process followed by a detailed model presentation. The alternative design is projected, given that the project could not be completed with the characteristics given, followed by the development and implementation of the research. The aim here is the assumption of the projectsâproblems by the stakeholders contribution and the determination of them in the management structure level

A SHARED INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR TOURISM ENTERPRISES IN DEVELOPING ECONOMIES
In a developing economy's business environment, introduction of new technology creates a large potential for more effective and streamlined production of tourism services. This study shows guidelines of design of an inter-organizational information system for small tourism enterprises. The entrepreneurial goal is to support strategic alliances in order to obtain better market-fit and sustainable competitive advance. This requires that the enterprises are capable of evaluating their existing processes, identify and outline improvements, and implement them. More than that, enterprises have to execute profound strategic changes in their business processes. For this change, study shows that adaption of supportive information system can be a key factor to satisfy these demands.
Firstly, using systematic literature review the study identifies global trends of e-tourism. Secondly the trends are compared with the reality of small tourism enterprises in Nicaraguan Caribbean coast. With interview and brain storming sessions with hotel managers and local tourism specialists, desired state of e-tourism enhanced business processes is defined. Performance gaps and solutions are identified and outlined in order to reach new customer segments and better customer satisfaction with use of inter-organizational information system. With help of shared information system, enterprises search for sustainable economic growth and more stable business environment for their activities.
The scientific domain of research is Information systems science. The method used for data collection and interpretation is systematic literature review and human and institutional capacity development -method. As result, the research identifies critical business processes when implementing e-Tourism services into tourism enterprises in developing economies. Strategic solutions for sustainable improvements in business processes supported by use of shared information system are outlined. As a practical result, the study lists required steps in order to reach desired changes in tourism enterprises with e-tourism initiative. Specification of requirements for information system is made.
