    PIWeCS: enhancing human/machine agency in an interactive composition system

    This paper focuses on the infrastructure and aesthetic approach used in PIWeCS: a Public Space Interactive Web-based Composition System. The concern was to increase the sense of dialogue between human and machine agency in an interactive work by adapting Paine's (2002) notion of a conversational model of interaction as a ‘complex system’. The machine implementation of PIWeCS is achieved through integrating intelligent agent programming with MAX/MSP. Human input is through a web infrastructure. The conversation is initiated and continued by participants through arrangements and composition based on short performed samples of traditional New Zealand Maori instruments. The system allows the extension of a composition through the electroacoustic manipulation of the source material

    Bell, a textual language for the bach library

    International audienceIn this paper we introduce bell, a new, small programming language included in the bach package for Max. The main design goals of bell are ease of integration with Max and bach and maximum compatibility with pre-existing syntaxes and conventions bach users are already acquainted to. The language is mainly exposed in Max through a new object named bach.eval, but other, older objects have been updated so as to take advantage of it. In this article, we shall discuss the main choices underlying the development of bell, and give a brief outline of its syntax and the way it integrates within Max

    Anthropology has neglected the study of music. Music and Digital Media shows how and why this should be redressed. It does so by enabling music to expand the horizons of digital anthropology, demonstrating how the field can build interdisciplinary links to music and sound studies, digital/media studies, and science and technology studies. Music and Digital Media is the first comparative ethnographic study of the impact of digital media on music worldwide. It offers a radical and lucid new theoretical framework for understanding digital media through music, showing that music is today where the promises and problems of the digital assume clamouring audibility. The book contains ten chapters, eight of which present comprehensive original ethnographies; they are bookended by an authoritative introduction and a comparative postlude. Five chapters address popular, folk, art and crossover musics in the global South and North, including Kenya, Argentina, India, Canada and the UK. Three chapters bring the digital experimentally to the fore, presenting pioneering ethnographies of anextra-legal peer-to-peer site and the streaming platform Spotify, a series of prominent internet-mediated music genres, and the first ethnography of a global software package, the interactive music platform Max. These factors have afforded the development of new transmission networks to handle large volumes of data and increasing power transmission. As the development of several multimedia technologies gets faster, even more data are generated and transmitted over the network. An example of this scenario is Telemedicine, which allows a remote connection to afford distant medical and clinical appointments. Therefore, this paper presents a tool consisting of a set of components that facilitate the management of distributed streams, providing support to various scenarios of video collaboration in healthcareA área de Tecnologia da Informação e Comunicação (TIC) tem sofrido uma notável transformação caracterizada pela universalização das formas de conectividade e popularização de dispositivos midiáticos. Tais fatores propiciaram o surgimento de novas redes de transmissão para lidar com grandes volumes de dados e com grande poder de transmissão. Com o rápido desenvolvimento de várias tecnologias multimídia, cada vez mais dados são gerados e transmitidos pela rede.
