    Multidisciplinary perspectives on Artificial Intelligence and the law

    This open access book presents an interdisciplinary, multi-authored, edited collection of chapters on Artificial Intelligence (‘AI’) and the Law. AI technology has come to play a central role in the modern data economy. Through a combination of increased computing power, the growing availability of data and the advancement of algorithms, AI has now become an umbrella term for some of the most transformational technological breakthroughs of this age. The importance of AI stems from both the opportunities that it offers and the challenges that it entails. While AI applications hold the promise of economic growth and efficiency gains, they also create significant risks and uncertainty. The potential and perils of AI have thus come to dominate modern discussions of technology and ethics – and although AI was initially allowed to largely develop without guidelines or rules, few would deny that the law is set to play a fundamental role in shaping the future of AI. As the debate over AI is far from over, the need for rigorous analysis has never been greater. This book thus brings together contributors from different fields and backgrounds to explore how the law might provide answers to some of the most pressing questions raised by AI.     DoubleH: Twitter User Stance Detection via Bipartite Graph Neural Networks

    Given the development and abundance of social media, studying the stance of social media users is a challenging and pressing issue. Social media users express their stance by posting tweets and retweeting. Therefore, the homogeneous relationship between users and the heterogeneous relationship between users and tweets are relevant for the stance detection task. Recently, graph neural networks (GNNs) have developed rapidly and have been applied to social media research. In this paper, we crawl a large-scale dataset of the 2020 US presidential election and automatically label all users by manually tagged hashtags. Subsequently, we propose a bipartite graph neural network model, DoubleH, which aims to better utilize homogeneous and heterogeneous information in user stance detection tasks. Specifically, we first construct a bipartite graph based on posting and retweeting relations for two kinds of nodes, including users and tweets. We then iteratively update the node's representation by extracting and separately processing heterogeneous and homogeneous information in the node's neighbors. Finally, the representations of user nodes are used for user stance classification. Experimental results show that DoubleH outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on popular benchmarks. Further analysis illustrates the model's utilization of information and demonstrates stability and efficiency at different numbers of layers

    NeuroGame: neural mechanisms underlying cognitive improvement in video gamers

    The video game market represents an influential and profitable industry. But concerns have been raised how video games impact on the human mind. There are reservations that video gaming may be addictive and foster aggressive behaviour. In contrast, a convincing body of research indicates that playing video games may improve cognitive processing. The exact mechanism thereof is not entirely understood. Most research suggests that video games train individuals in learning how to employ attentional control to focus on processing relevant information, while being able to suppress irrelevant information. Thus, video game players acquire the ability of being able to develop strategies to process information more efficiently. However, no algorithmic solution therefore has been provided yet. Thus, it is not clear which and how attentional control functions contribute to these effects. Moreover, neural mechanisms thereof are not well understood. We hypothesized that alterations in alpha power, i.e., modulations in brain oscillatory activity around 10 Hz, represent a promising neural substrate of video gaming effects. This was because, alpha activity represents an established neural correlate of attention processing given that its amplitude modulation corresponds to alterations in information processing. We investigated this by relating differential cognitive processing in video game players to changes in alpha power modulation. Moreover, we tried to imitate this effect using non-invasive brain stimulation. We were successful in achieving the former but not the latter. We provide a reasonable explanation for this. Thus, our results mostly support our hypothesis according to which altered alpha power may account for gaming effects

    Talking about personal recovery in bipolar disorder: Integrating health research, natural language processing, and corpus linguistics to analyse peer online support forum posts

    Background: Personal recovery, ‘living a satisfying, hopeful and contributing lifeeven with the limitations caused by the illness’ (Anthony, 1993) is of particular value in bipolar disorder where symptoms often persist despite treatment. So far, personal recovery has only been studied in researcher-constructed environments (interviews, focus groups). Support forum posts can serve as a complementary naturalistic data source. Objective: The overarching aim of this thesis was to study personal recovery experiences that people living with bipolar disorder have shared in online support forums through integrating health research, NLP, and corpus linguistics in a mixed methods approach within a pragmatic research paradigm, while considering ethical issues and involving people with lived experience. Methods: This mixed-methods study analysed: 1) previous qualitative evidence on personal recovery in bipolar disorder from interviews and focus groups 2) who self-reports a bipolar disorder diagnosis on the online discussion platform Reddit 3) the relationship of mood and posting in mental health-specific Reddit forums (subreddits) 4) discussions of personal recovery in bipolar disorder subreddits. Results: A systematic review of qualitative evidence resulted in the first framework for personal recovery in bipolar disorder, POETIC (Purpose & meaning, Optimism & hope, Empowerment, Tensions, Identity, Connectedness). Mainly young or middle-aged US-based adults self-report a bipolar disorder diagnosis on Reddit. Of these, those experiencing more intense emotions appear to be more likely to post in mental health support subreddits. Their personal recovery-related discussions in bipolar disorder subreddits primarily focussed on three domains: Purpose & meaning (particularly reproductive decisions, work), Connectedness (romantic relationships, social support), Empowerment (self-management, personal responsibility). Support forum data highlighted personal recovery issues that exclusively or more frequently came up online compared to previous evidence from interviews and focus groups. Conclusion: This project is the first to analyse non-reactive data on personal recovery in bipolar disorder. Indicating the key areas that people focus on in personal recovery when posting freely and the language they use provides a helpful starting point for formal and informal carers to understand the concerns of people diagnosed with bipolar disorder and to consider how best to offer support

    Similarity-driven and Task-driven Models for Diversity of Opinion in Crowdsourcing Markets

    The recent boom in crowdsourcing has opened up a new avenue for utilizing human intelligence in the realm of data analysis. This innovative approach provides a powerful means for connecting online workers to tasks that cannot effectively be done solely by machines or conducted by professional experts due to cost constraints. Within the field of social science, four elements are required to construct a sound crowd - Diversity of Opinion, Independence, Decentralization and Aggregation. However, while the other three components have already been investigated and implemented in existing crowdsourcing platforms, 'Diversity of Opinion' has not been functionally enabled yet. From a computational point of view, constructing a wise crowd necessitates quantitatively modeling and taking diversity into account. There are usually two paradigms in a crowdsourcing marketplace for worker selection: building a crowd to wait for tasks to come and selecting workers for a given task. We propose similarity-driven and task-driven models for both paradigms. Also, we develop efficient and effective algorithms for recruiting a limited number of workers with optimal diversity in both models. To validate our solutions, we conduct extensive experiments using both synthetic datasets and real data sets.Comment: 32 pages, 10 figure

    Reframing museum epistemology for the information age: a discursive design approach to revealing complexity

    This practice-based research inquiry examines the impact of an epistemic shift, brought about by the dawning of the information age and advances in networked communication technologies, on physical knowledge institutions - focusing on museums. The research charts adapting knowledge schemas used in museum knowledge organisation and discusses the potential for a new knowledge schema, the network, to establish a new epistemology for museums that reflects contemporary hyperlinked and networked knowledge. The research investigates the potential for networked and shared virtual reality spaces to reveal new ‘knowledge monuments’ reflecting the epistemic values of the network society and the space of flows. The central practice for this thesis focuses on two main elements. The first is applying networks and visual complexity to reveal multi-linearity and adapting perspectives in relational knowledge networks. This concept was explored through two discursive design projects, the Museum Collection Engine, which uses data visualisation, cloud data, and image recognition within an immersive projection dome to create a dynamic and searchable museum collection that returns new and interlinking constellations of museum objects and knowledge. The second discursive design project was Shared Pasts: Decoding Complexity, an AR app with a unique ‘anti-personalisation’ recommendation system designed to reveal complex narratives around historic objects and places. The second element is folksonomy and co-design in developing new community-focused archives using the community's language to build the dataset and socially tagged metadata.
