Security and privacy issues of physical objects in the IoT: Challenges and opportunities

    Get PDF
In the Internet of Things (IoT), security and privacy issues of physical objects are crucial to the related applications. In order to clarify the complicated security and privacy issues, the life cycle of a physical object is divided into three stages of pre-working, in-working, and post-working. On this basis, a physical object-based security architecture for the IoT is put forward. According to the security architecture, security and privacy requirements and related protecting technologies for physical objects in different working stages are analyzed in detail. Considering the development of IoT technologies, potential security and privacy challenges that IoT objects may face in the pervasive computing environment are summarized. At the same time, possible directions for dealing with these challenges are also pointed out

Secured authentication of radio-frequency identification system using PRESENT block cipher

The internet of things (IoT) is an emerging and robust technology to interconnect billions of objects or devices via the internet to communicate smartly. The radio frequency identification (RFID) system plays a significant role in IoT systems, providing most features like mutual establishment, key establishment, and data confidentiality. This manuscript designed secure authentication of IoT-based RFID systems using the light-weight PRESENT algorithm on the hardware platform. The PRESENT-256 block cipher is considered in this work, and it supports 64-bit data with a 256-key length. The PRESENT-80/128 cipher is also designed along with PRESENT-256 at electronic codebook (ECB) mode for Secured mutual authentication between RFID tag and reader for IoT applications. The secured authentication is established in two stages: Tag recognition from reader, mutual authentication between tag and reader using PRESENT-80/128/256 cipher modules. The complete secured authentication of IoT-based RFID system simulation results is verified using the chip-scope tool with field-programmable gate array (FPGA) results. The comparative results for PRESENT block cipher with existing PRESENT ciphers and other light-weight algorithms are analyzed with resource improvements. The proposed secured authentication work is compared with similar RFID-mutual authentication (MA) approaches with better chip area and frequency improvements

The Internet of Things Security and Privacy: Current Schemes, Challenges and Future Prospects

The Internet of Things devices and users exchange massive amount of data. Some of these exchanged messages are highly sensitive as they involve organizational, military or patient personally identifiable information. Therefore, many schemes and protocols have been put forward to protect the transmitted messages. The techniques deployed in these schemes may include blockchain, public key infrastructure, elliptic curve cryptography, physically unclonable function and radio frequency identification. In this paper, a review is provided of these schemes including their strengths and weaknesses. Based on the obtained results, it is clear that majority of these protocols have numerous security, performance and privacy issues

Security of IoT in 5G Cellular Networks: A Review of Current Status, Challenges and Future Directions

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to a global network that integrates real life physical objects with the virtual world through the Internet for making intelligent decisions. In a pervasive computing environment, thousands of smart devices, that are constrained in storage, battery backup and computational capability, are connected with each other. In such an environment, cellular networks that are evolving from 4G to 5G, are set to play a crucial role. Distinctive features like high bandwidth, wider coverage, easy connectivity, in-built billing mechanism, interface for M2M communication, etc., makes 5G cellular network a perfect candidate to be adopted as a backbone network for the future IoT. However, due to resource constrained nature of the IoT devices, researchers have anticipated several security and privacy issues in IoT deployments over 5G cellular network. Off late, several schemes and protocols have been proposed to handle these issues. This paper performs a comprehensive review of such schemes and protocols proposed in recent times. Different open security issues, challenges and future research direction are also summarized in this review paper

Data Security and privacy is one of the serious issues in internet-based computing like cloud computing, mobile computing and Internet of Things (IoT). This security and privacy become manifolded in IoT because of diversified technologies and the interaction of Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) used in IoT. IoTs are being adapted in academics and in many organizations without fully protecting their assets and also without realizing that the traditional security solutions cannot be applied to IoT environment. This paper explores a comprehensive survey of IoT architectures, communication technologies and the security and privacy issues of them for a new researcher in IoT. This paper also suggests methods to thwart the security and privacy issues in the different layers of IoT architecture

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of physical things that are outfitted with sensors, software, and other technologies that are able to communicate and exchange data with other devices and systems over the Internet. Because of the diversity of their surroundings, IoT systems are sensitive to network attacks. The IoT could be the source of these dangers and attacks. There are a lot of devices that communicate with each other via the IoT, and one of the most critical components of this is to maintain IoT security. IoT devices are a prime target for attackers and pose a serious risk of impersonation during a call. Proposals to prevent session hijacking in device-to-device communication are made in this research study. User-to-device authentication relies on usernames and passwords, but continuous authentication doesn't. This protocol relies on device features and contextual information. Moreover, this protocol reduces the synchronization losses using shadow IDs and emergency key. In addition, the protocol’s robustness will be tested by providing security and performance analysis
