    Unleashing the power of artificial intelligence for climate action in industrial markets

    Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a game-changing capability in industrial markets that can accelerate humanity's race against climate change. Positioned in a resource-hungry and pollution-intensive industry, this study explores AI-powered climate service innovation capabilities and their overall effects. The study develops and validates an AI model, identifying three primary dimensions and nine subdimensions. Based on a dataset in the fast fashion industry, the findings show that the AI-powered climate service innovation capabilities significantly influence both environmental and market performance, in which environmental performance acts as a partial mediator. Specifically, the results identify the key elements of an AI-informed framework for climate action and show how this can be used to develop a range of mitigation, adaptation and resilience initiatives in response to climate change

    Mobile Application to Improve the Follow-up and Control Process in Patients with Tuberculosis

    Tuberculosis is a severe and life-threatening illness that affects numerous individuals worldwide every day. The key objective of this study was to create a system that could enhance the monitoring and management of tuberculosis patients. To achieve this goal, the Mobile D methodology was utilized because of its effectiveness in project management. This methodology emphasizes test-driven development, continuous integration, and optimization to enhance software processes. The outcome of this research was a prototype of a mobile application specifically designed for individuals with tuberculosis. Professionals and people affected by the disease assessed the quality of the prototype. They evaluated its effectiveness, user-friendliness, design, and functionality and gave ratings of 4.77 and 4.69 on a Likert scale, respectively. These figures indicate that the prototype meets high-quality criteria. In conclusion, this research successfully created an efficient prototype that enhances the monitoring and control of tuberculosis patients. The prototype includes features such as real-time consultations for immediate interaction between physicians and patients, clinical history visualization, and medication reminders, all of which improve the user’s experience

    iBUST: An intelligent behavioural trust model for securing industrial cyber-physical systems

    To meet the demand of the world's largest population, smart manufacturing has accelerated the adoption of smart factories—where autonomous and cooperative instruments across all levels of production and logistics networks are integrated through a Cyber-Physical Production System (CPPS). However, these networks are comprised of various heterogeneous devices with varying computational power and memory capabilities. As a result, many secure communication protocols – that demand considerably high computational power and memory – can not be verbatim employed on these networks, and thereby, leaving them more vulnerable to security threats and attacks over conventional networks. These threats can largely be tackled by employing a Trust Management Model (TMM) by exploiting the behavioural patterns of nodes to identify their trust class. In this context, ML-based models are best suited due to their ability to capture hidden patterns in data, learning and improving the pattern detection accuracy over time to counteract and tackle threats of a dynamic nature, which is absent in most of the conventional models. However, among the existing ML-based solutions in detecting attack patterns, many of them are computationally expensive, require a long training time, and a considerably large amount of training data—which are seldom available. An aid to this is the association rule learning (ARL) paradigm, whose models are computationally inexpensive and do not require a long training time. Therefore, this paper proposes an ARL-based intelligent Behavioural Trust Model (iBUST) for securing the CPPS. For this intelligent TMM, a variant of Frequency Pattern Growth (FP-Growth), called enhanced FP-Growth (EFP-Growth) algorithm is developed by altering the internal data structures for faster execution and by developing a modified exponential decay function (MEDF) to automatically calculate minimum supports for adapting trust evolution characteristics. In addition, a new optimisation model for finding optimum parameter values in the MEDF and an algorithm for transmuting a 1D quantitative feature into a respective categorical feature are developed to facilitate the model. Afterwards, the trust class of an object is identified employing the Naïve Bayes classifier. This proposed model is evaluated on a trust evolution-supported experimental environment along with other compared models taking a benchmark dataset into consideration, where it outperforms its counterparts

    Running to Your Own Beat:An Embodied Approach to Auditory Display Design

    Personal fitness trackers represent a multi-billion-dollar industry, predicated on devices for assisting users in achieving their health goals. However, most current products only offer activity tracking and measurement of performance metrics, which do not ultimately address the need for technique related assistive feedback in a cost-effective way. Addressing this gap in the design space for assistive run training interfaces is also crucial in combating the negative effects of Forward Head Position, a condition resulting from mobile device use, with a rapid growth of incidence in the population. As such, Auditory Displays (AD) offer an innovative set of tools for creating such a device for runners. ADs present the opportunity to design interfaces which allow natural unencumbered motion, detached from the mobile or smartwatch screen, thus making them ideal for providing real-time assistive feedback for correcting head posture during running. However, issues with AD design have centred around overall usability and user-experience, therefore, in this thesis an ecological and embodied approach to AD design is presented as a vehicle for designing an assistive auditory interface for runners, which integrates seamlessly into their everyday environments

    Intelligent technologies such as Business Intelligence systems, big data, artificial intelligence including machine learning and cognitive technologies play crucial role in the process of a smart city management. The aim of the paper is to indicate the role of intelligent solutions in the management of a contemporary city, particularly focusing on the support of decision making process. The research methodology is based on a qualitative approach where six case studies were conducted in the selected big cities in Poland in 2021 year. The respondents belonged to the group of mainly managers of IT departments in the cities. The case study analyses showed that implemented intelligent solutions in the process of a smart city management positively and significantly affect efficacy, efficiency, quality, and acceleration of the decision-making process and also support the creation of a particular city development strategy. The paper puts also an emphasis on the review of AI applications within the concept of smart city in a big worldwide metropolies

    In the aftermath of a global pandemic, amidst new and ongoing wars, genocide, inequality, and staggering ecological collapse, some in the public and political arena have argued that we are in desperate need of greater empathy — be this with our neighbours, refugees, war victims, the vulnerable or disappearing animal and plant species. This interdisciplinary volume asks the crucial questions: How does a better understanding of empathy contribute, if at all, to our understanding of others? How is it implicated in the ways we perceive, understand and constitute others as subjects? Conversations on Empathy examines how empathy might be enacted and experienced either as a way to highlight forms of otherness or, instead, to overcome what might otherwise appear to be irreducible differences. It explores the ways in which empathy enables us to understand, imagine and create sameness and otherness in our everyday intersubjective encounters focusing on a varied range of "radical others" – others who are perceived as being dramatically different from oneself. With a focus on the importance of empathy to understand difference, the book contends that the role of empathy is critical, now more than ever, for thinking about local and global challenges of interconnectedness, care and justice
