    Cloud provider capacity augmentation through automated resource bartering

Growing interest in Cloud Computing places a heavy workload on cloud providers which is becoming increasingly difficult for them to manage with their primary data centre infrastructures. Resource scarcity can make providers vulnerable to significant reputational damage and it often forces customers to select services from the larger, more established companies, sometimes at a higher price. Funding limitations, however, commonly prevent emerging and even established providers from making a continual investment in hardware speculatively assuming a certain level of growth in demand. As an alternative, they may opt to use the current inter-cloud resource sharing systems which mainly rely on monetary payments and thus put pressure on already stretched cash flows. To address such issues, a new multi-agent based Cloud Resource Bartering System (CRBS) is implemented in this work that fosters the management and bartering of pooled resources without requiring costly financial transactions between IAAS cloud providers. Agents in CRBS collaborate to facilitate bartering among providers which not only strengthens their trading relationships but also enables them to handle surges in demand with their primary setup. Unlike existing systems, CRBS assigns resources by considering resource urgency which comparatively improves customers’ satisfaction and the resource utilization rate by more than 50%. The evaluation results verify that our system assists providers to timely acquire the additional resources and to maintain sustainable service delivery. We conclude that the existence of such a system is economically beneficial for cloud providers and enables them to adapt to fluctuating workloads

    Multi-Criteria Service Selection Agent for Federated Cloud

    Federated cloud interconnects small and medium-sized cloud service providers for service enhancement to meet demand spikes. The service bartering technique in the federated cloud enables service providers to exchange their services. Selecting an optimal service provider to share services is challenging in the cloud federation. Agent-based and Reciprocal Resource Fairness (RRF) based models are used in the federated cloud for service selection. The agent-based model selects the best service provider using Quality of Service (quality of service). RRF model chooses fair service providers based on service providers\u27 previous service contribution to the federation. However, the models mentioned above fail to address free rider and poor performer problems during the service provider selection process. To solve the above issue, we propose a Multi-criteria Service Selection (MCSS) algorithm for effectively selecting a service provider using quality of service, Performance-Cost Ratio (PCR), and RRF. Comprehensive case studies are conducted to prove the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Extensive simulation experiments are conducted to compare the proposed algorithm performance with the existing algorithm. The evaluation results demonstrated that MCSS provides 10% more services selection efficiency than Cloud Resource Bartering System (CRBS) and provides 16% more service selection efficiency than RPF

This open access book will review the state of the art from an IS, Computer Science and Accounting perspective, will introduce and discuss the main techniques for measuring business value for cloud computing in a variety of scenarios, and illustrate these with mini-case studies

    This work is a pre-study, and it is intended to produce a report under the guidance of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) about the role of geospatial data in data economy, especially in a Finnish context. The aim was to review the state-of-the-art and needs regarding geospatial data and positioning in today’s data economy as well as the impact of geospatial data and positioning. Geospatial data has an important role in data economy. The report delves into the technical aspects of data, unveiling the untapped potential of its value and the cross-disciplinary role it serves in multiple industries. Furthermore, the report emphasizes the synergistic-sustainability potential geospatial data has for addressing climate impacts and facilitating more precise environmental monitoring. The subject is multidisciplinary, and therefore it was logical to include a wide variety of perspectives in the report. According to the review of literature and an illustrating case study, there is a need for many kinds of further research related to geospatial data connected to more precise Earth observation, pervasive positioning solutions, value and use of geospatial data in decision-making and resource allocation, measuring the value as well as customizing services and products related to it. The research related to competences needed to use the data, improvement of the use of data as well as the use of environmental performance indicators is needed too

    The Fuzzy Futures of Neo-Carbon Work : Neo-Carbon Futures Clinique II

    This report documents and analyses the results of a Neo-Carbon Futures Clinique held at Hotel President in Helsinki 13 April 2016. At the Futures Clinique workshop groups anticipated possible futures of peer-to-peer work that is self-organised by the workers. The Futures Clinique is part of the Neo-Carbon Energy research project. The foresight part of the project is concerned with studying the futures of peer-to-peer societies enabled by the proposed Neo-Carbon energy system. Such a system would be a distributed, renewable energy system that empowers citizens by providing them with cheap, clean and abundant energy and materials. In this project, possible futures of a peer-to-peer society are studied through four scenarios (Heinonen et al. 2016), which provided the framework also for this Futures Clinique. The results of the Futures Clinique were summarised and refined into seven categories, each illuminating different aspects of the possible futures of peer-to-peer work. Common to the categories is the strengthening of values other than economic as the main drivers in economy and society

    The readiness of the South African private and public sector for the fourth industrial revolution

    The exponential growth of technology over the past few years led to it being given prime slot at the World Economic Forum held in Davos in January 2016, with Forum founder and executive chairman Klaus Schwab coining this potentially disruptive phenomenon as the ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution’. Since then, the term Fourth Industrial Revolution (FIR) has gained ever increasing relevance and importance. Schwab (2016) emphasised that the world is on the edge of “a technological revolution that will fundamentally alter the way we live, work and relate to one another”; and that in the pure “scale, scope and complexity, the transformation will be unlike anything humankind has experienced before”. What is certain is that the FIR is predicted by many to impact significantly on jobs in the world as robotics; automation and artificial intelligence become more prolific. This shift will have a direct bearing on South Africa as well. With the challenges facing the country, such as infrastructure constraints, frequent industrial actions, rising costs and shortages of skills, the loss of further jobs should be of concern for government and the private sector alike. The outcomes of the in-depth analysis of future studies practice and theory in this research study give credence to the argument that the manner in which planning for the future of the FIR in the South African context is taking place requires profound adjustments. The development of fresh insight through the application of futures studies is essential to this planning process, as is progressively evidenced in the tendency for present day business to make collaborative decisions and strategies that are founded on and informed by futures studies. This research has tried to gain insight into the possible future of the FIR in South Africa through the creation of four scenarios towards 2035. These are outlined as follows: The Fifth Element, which is the ‘best case’ scenario, to which the country aspires; Terminator, the ‘worst case’ scenario, in which everything goes bad; The Matrix, the outlier future based on a surprising, disruptive, emerging issue; and The Day the Earth Stood Still, in which no change takes place, making it ‘business as usual’. The research furthermore endeavoured to discover the preferred future for the FIR in a South African context, as a basis for the Future Vision of the FIR in South Africa towards 2035. All through this study, Inayatullah’s (2008) pillars of futures studies were applied as a guide in mapping the present and future, further deepening and broadening the future through the development of scenarios, and, finally, transforming the future by narrowing it down to the preferred. It is up to the South African public and private sectors to determine which path is to be followed in the decisions surrounding the embrace and acceptance of the FIR as the country moves towards progress and sustainable development. Through a novel and innovative methodology, the creation of an atmosphere of trust, and the sharing of purpose, values and benefits, a national Future Vision of the FIR in South Africa towards 2035 is attainable. All stakeholders have to commit to working in co-operative partnerships, with government, society, local communities and labour striding boldly together into a world of technological, commercial, environmental and social innovation
