    The oil and gas industry is a complex data-driven industry with compute-intensive, data-intensive and business-intensive features. Cloud computing and big data have a broad application prospect in the oil and gas industry. This research aims to highlight the cloud computing and big data issues and challenges from the informatization in oil and gas industry. In this paper, the distributed cloud storage architecture and its applications for seismic data of oil and gas industry are focused on first. Then,cloud desktop for oil and gas industry applications are also introduced in terms of efficiency, security and usability. Finally, big data architecture and security issues of oil and gas industry are analyzed. Cloud computing and big data architectures have advantages in many aspects, such as system scalability, reliability, and serviceability. This paper also provides a brief description for the future development of Cloud computing and big data in oil and gas industry. Cloud computing and big data can provide convenient information sharing and high quality service for oil and gas industry

    Energy-efficient through-life smart design, manufacturing and operation of ships in an industry 4.0 environment

    Energy efficiency is an important factor in the marine industry to help reduce manufacturing and operational costs as well as the impact on the environment. In the face of global competition and cost-effectiveness, ship builders and operators today require a major overhaul in the entire ship design, manufacturing and operation process to achieve these goals. This paper highlights smart design, manufacturing and operation as the way forward in an industry 4.0 (i4) era from designing for better energy efficiency to more intelligent ships and smart operation through-life. The paper (i) draws parallels between ship design, manufacturing and operation processes, (ii) identifies key challenges facing such a temporal (lifecycle) as opposed to spatial (mass) products, (iii) proposes a closed-loop ship lifecycle framework and (iv) outlines potential future directions in smart design, manufacturing and operation of ships in an industry 4.0 value chain so as to achieve more energy-efficient vessels. Through computational intelligence and cyber-physical integration, we envision that industry 4.0 can revolutionise ship design, manufacturing and operations in a smart product through-life process in the near future

    Cloud-based data-intensive framework towards fault diagnosis in large-scale petrochemical plants

    Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSNs) are expected to offer promising monitoring solutions to meet the demands of monitoring applications for fault diagnosis in large-scale petrochemical plants, however, involves heterogeneity and Big Data problems due to large amounts of sensor data with high volume and velocity. Cloud Computing is an outstanding approach which provides a flexible platform to support the addressing of such heterogeneous and data-intensive problems with massive computing, storage, and data-based services. In this paper, we propose a Cloud-based Data-intensive Framework (CDF) for on-line equipment fault diagnosis system that facilitates the integration and processing of mass sensor data generated from Industrial Sensing Ecosystem (ISE). ISE enables data collection of interest with topic-specific industrial monitoring systems. Moreover, this approach contributes the establishment of on-line fault diagnosis monitoring system with sensor streaming computing and storage paradigms based on Hadoop as a key to the complex problems. Finally, we present a practical illustration referred to this framework serving equipment fault diagnosis systems with the ISE

    Kazakhstan's Diversification from the Natural Resources Sector: Strategic and Economic Opportunities

    This book explores opportunities for diversifying modern Kazakhstan's economy, which is still heavily dependent on its natural resources, as well as looking at economic opportunities for the whole Central Asian region arising from the Chinese government's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The book is comprised of four parts. Part 1 explores the first main theme of the book: development of the economy based on the resource sector with the example of Kazakhstan. Part 2 examines opportunities for diversification arising from BRI: a rise of transport and communication industries alongside the new Belt and Road economic route. Part 3 explores the view from China on the perspectives of regional development, not least the economic reasons for the launch of this programme, investments and planned effects. Part 4 discusses other internal sources for diversification of the economy in Kazakhstan based on development of local industry in the oil and gas sector, small- and medium-sized enterprises and tertiary sector of the economy.     Traditional power grids are being transformed into Smart Grids (SGs) to address the issues in existing power system due to uni-directional information flow, energy wastage, growing energy demand, reliability and security. SGs offer bi-directional energy flow between service providers and consumers, involving power generation, transmission, distribution and utilization systems. SGs employ various devices for the monitoring, analysis and control of the grid, deployed at power plants, distribution centers and in consumers' premises in a very large number. Hence, an SG requires connectivity, automation and the tracking of such devices. This is achieved with the help of Internet of Things (IoT). IoT helps SG systems to support various network functions throughout the generation, transmission, distribution and consumption of energy by incorporating IoT devices (such as sensors, actuators and smart meters), as well as by providing the connectivity, automation and tracking for such devices. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey on IoT-aided SG systems, which includes the existing architectures, applications and prototypes of IoT-aided SG systems. This survey also highlights the open issues, challenges and future research directions for IoT-aided SG systems

    The Intelligent Crude Oil Anti-theft System Based on IoT Under Different Scenarios

    AbstractOil theft always results in huge economic loss, human casualties, and extremely environmental pollution especially when the leaks from crude oil pipeline are not detected and repaired timely. In this paper, we focus on how to detect and monitor abnormal noise and vibration beforehand or in real time by the Internet of Things (IoT). Firstly, the diversities of crude oil theft and the difficulties of oil anti-theft are analyzed in China, and the requirement analysis of the IoT application is stated. Secondly, the intelligent anti-theft system based on the IoT is planned and designed for crude oil transportation by tank trucks and by oil pipelines according to the current situation in China. Thirdly, the problems of anti-theft system implementation are discussed, and the suggestions and advice are put forward to ensure that the system can be implemented successfully. The intelligent anti-theft system application can not only stop oil theft timely, but also prevent oil mice from stealing crude oil beforehand
