    Pattern languages are a well-established class of languages that is particularly popular in algorithmic learning theory, but very little is known about their closure properties. In the present paper we establish a large number of closure properties of the terminal-free pattern languages, and we characterise when the union of two terminal-free pattern languages is again a terminal-free pattern language. We demonstrate that the equivalent question for general pattern languages is characterised differently, and that it is linked to some of the most prominent open problems for pattern languages. We also provide fundamental insights into a well-known construction of E-pattern languages as unions of NE-pattern languages, and vice versa. Ā© 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland

    Reactive Web systems, Web services, and Web-based publish/ subscribe systems communicate events as XML messages, and in many cases require composite event detection: it is not sufficient to react to single event messages, but events have to be considered in relation to other events that are received over time. Emphasizing language design and formal semantics, we describe the rule-based query language XChangeEQ for detecting composite events. XChangeEQ is designed to completely cover and integrate the four complementary querying dimensions: event data, event composition, temporal relationships, and event accumulation. Semantics are provided as model and fixpoint theories; while this is an established approach for rule languages, it has not been applied for event queries before

    A Characterization for Decidable Separability by Piecewise Testable Languages

    The separability problem for word languages of a class C\mathcal{C} by languages of a class S\mathcal{S} asks, for two given languages II and EE from C\mathcal{C}, whether there exists a language SS from S\mathcal{S} that includes II and excludes EE, that is, IāŠ†SI \subseteq S and Sāˆ©E=āˆ…S\cap E = \emptyset. In this work, we assume some mild closure properties for C\mathcal{C} and study for which such classes separability by a piecewise testable language (PTL) is decidable. We characterize these classes in terms of decidability of (two variants of) an unboundedness problem. From this, we deduce that separability by PTL is decidable for a number of language classes, such as the context-free languages and languages of labeled vector addition systems. Furthermore, it follows that separability by PTL is decidable if and only if one can compute for any language of the class its downward closure wrt. the scattered substring ordering (i.e., if the set of scattered substrings of any language of the class is effectively regular). The obtained decidability results contrast some undecidability results. In fact, for all (non-regular) language classes that we present as examples with decidable separability, it is undecidable whether a given language is a PTL itself. Our characterization involves a result of independent interest, which states that for any kind of languages II and EE, non-separability by PTL is equivalent to the existence of common patterns in II and EE

The patterns enable non-experts to read and write formal specifications for realistic systems and facilitate easy conversion of specifications between formalisms, such as LTL, CTL, QRE.     A preliminary investigation of some acoustic characteristics of ejectives in Waimaā€™a: VOT and closure duration

    Waimaā€™a is a little known language spoken in East Timor. From a typological perspective, its stop system is unusual for an Austronesian language: it has a fourway stop system which includes a set of voiceless ejectives. In this paper, we report on the results of our first experimental investigation of Waimaā€™a, in which ejectives and pulmonic voiceless aspirated and unaspirated stops are compared. After first presenting some qualitative observations about ejectives, we examine voice onset time (VOT) duration, closure duration and overall duration i.e. closure + VOT. We then turn to a cross-linguistic comparison, looking in particular at the behaviour of ejectives relative to other voiceless stop types, and at possible place of articulation dependencies concerning VOT and closure duration
