    3-D facial expression representation using B-spline statistical shape model

    Effective representation and recognition of human faces are essential in a number of applications including human-computer interaction (HCI), bio-metrics or video conferencing. This paper presents initial results obtained for a novel method of 3-D facial expressions representation based on the shape space vector of the statistical shape model. The statistical shape model is constructed based on the control points of the B-spline surfaces of the train-ing data set. The model fitting for the data is achieved by a modified iterative closest point (ICP) method with the surface deformations restricted to the es-timated shape space. The proposed method is fully automated and tested on the synthetic 3-D facial data with various facial expressions. Experimental results show that the proposed 3-D facial expression representation can be potentially used for practical applications

    Morphable Face Models - An Open Framework

    In this paper, we present a novel open-source pipeline for face registration based on Gaussian processes as well as an application to face image analysis. Non-rigid registration of faces is significant for many applications in computer vision, such as the construction of 3D Morphable face models (3DMMs). Gaussian Process Morphable Models (GPMMs) unify a variety of non-rigid deformation models with B-splines and PCA models as examples. GPMM separate problem specific requirements from the registration algorithm by incorporating domain-specific adaptions as a prior model. The novelties of this paper are the following: (i) We present a strategy and modeling technique for face registration that considers symmetry, multi-scale and spatially-varying details. The registration is applied to neutral faces and facial expressions. (ii) We release an open-source software framework for registration and model-building, demonstrated on the publicly available BU3D-FE database. The released pipeline also contains an implementation of an Analysis-by-Synthesis model adaption of 2D face images, tested on the Multi-PIE and LFW database. This enables the community to reproduce, evaluate and compare the individual steps of registration to model-building and 3D/2D model fitting. (iii) Along with the framework release, we publish a new version of the Basel Face Model (BFM-2017) with an improved age distribution and an additional facial expression model

    Engagement and control of synchroniser mechanisms in dual clutch transmissions

    The study of synchroniser engagements in dual clutch transmissions is undertaken in this paper, identifying limitations to the repeatability of actuation, demonstrating one popular solution for positive synchroniser control and offering an alternate engagement tool. Principally, high wet clutch drag and the synchroniser design have lead to detrimental alignments conditions, where indexing chamfers on sleeve and target gear delay engagement of the mechanism and lead to potential sleeve block out. This paper focuses on the investigation of different control methods for overcoming these detrimental alignment conditions. The application of a closed loop control method to overcome block out related engagements is studied, and, for comparison, a novel engagement tool for overriding all chamfer alignment conditions is introduced and evaluated. Results have demonstrated that both techniques have some limitations, with the novel tool being capable of providing direct control of all chamfer engagements with limited extension of the duration of synchroniser engagements; however, some tuning of mechanism parameters is required for different engagement conditions. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.     3D reconstruction of ribcage geometry from biplanar radiographs using a statistical parametric model approach

    Rib cage 3D reconstruction is an important prerequisite for thoracic spine modelling, particularly for studies of the deformed thorax in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. This study proposes a new method for rib cage 3D reconstruction from biplanar radiographs, using a statistical parametric model approach. Simplified parametric models were defined at the hierarchical levels of rib cage surface, rib midline and rib surface, and applied on a database of 86 trunks. The resulting parameter database served to statistical models learning which were used to quickly provide a first estimate of the reconstruction from identifications on both radiographs. This solution was then refined by manual adjustments in order to improve the matching between model and image. Accuracy was assessed by comparison with 29 rib cages from CT scans in terms of geometrical parameter differences and in terms of line-to-line error distance between the rib midlines. Intra and inter-observer reproducibility were determined regarding 20 scoliotic patients. The first estimate (mean reconstruction time of 2’30) was sufficient to extract the main rib cage global parameters with a 95% confidence interval lower than 7%, 8%, 2% and 4° for rib cage volume, antero-posterior and lateral maximal diameters and maximal rib hump, respectively. The mean error distance was 5.4 mm (max 35mm) down to 3.6 mm (max 24 mm) after the manual adjustment step (+3’30).     Computational Techniques to Predict Orthopaedic Implant Alignment and Fit in Bone

    Among the broad palette of surgical techniques employed in the current orthopaedic practice, joint replacement represents one of the most difficult and costliest surgical procedures. While numerous recent advances suggest that computer assistance can dramatically improve the precision and long term outcomes of joint arthroplasty even in the hands of experienced surgeons, many of the joint replacement protocols continue to rely almost exclusively on an empirical basis that often entail a succession of trial and error maneuvers that can only be performed intraoperatively. Although the surgeon is generally unable to accurately and reliably predict a priori what the final malalignment will be or even what implant size should be used for a certain patient, the overarching goal of all arthroplastic procedures is to ensure that an appropriate match exists between the native and prosthetic axes of the articulation. To address this relative lack of knowledge, the main objective of this thesis was to develop a comprehensive library of numerical techniques capable to: 1) accurately reconstruct the outer and inner geometry of the bone to be implanted; 2) determine the location of the native articular axis to be replicated by the implant; 3) assess the insertability of a certain implant within the endosteal canal of the bone to be implanted; 4) propose customized implant geometries capable to ensure minimal malalignments between native and prosthetic axes. The accuracy of the developed algorithms was validated through comparisons performed against conventional methods involving either contact-acquired data or navigated implantation approaches, while various customized implant designs proposed were tested with an original numerical implantation method. It is anticipated that the proposed computer-based approaches will eliminate or at least diminish the need for undesirable trial and error implantation procedures in a sense that present error-prone intraoperative implant insertion decisions will be at least augmented if not even replaced by optimal computer-based solutions to offer reliable virtual “previews” of the future surgical procedure. While the entire thesis is focused on the elbow as the most challenging joint replacement surgery, many of the developed approaches are equally applicable to other upper or lower limb articulations
