    Timing constraints for high speed counterflow-clocked pipelining

    technical reportWith the escalation of clock frequencies and the increasing ratio of wire- to gate-delays, clock skew is a major problem to be overcome in tomorrow's high-speed VLSI chips. Also, with an increasing number of stages switching simultaneously comes the problem of higher peak power consumption. In our past work, we have proposed a novel scheme called Counterflow-Clocked (C2) Pipelining to combat these problem, and discussed methods for composing C2 pipelined stages. In this paper, we analyze, in great detail, the timing constraints to be obeyed in designing basic C2 pipelined stages as well as in composing C2 pipelined stages. C2 pipelining is well suited for systems that exhibit mostly uni-directional data flows as well as possess mostly nearest-neighbor connections. We illustrate C2 pipelining on such a design with several design examples. C2 pipelining eases the distribution of high speed clocks, shortens the clock period by eliminating global clock signals, allows natural use of level-sensitive dynamic latches, and generates less internal switching noise due to the uniformly distributed latch operation. By applying C2 pipelining and its composition methods to build a system, VLSI designers can substitute the global clock skew problem with many local one-sided delay constraints

    Pulse propagation, graph cover, and packet forwarding

    We study distributed systems, with a particular focus on graph problems and fault tolerance. Fault-tolerance in a microprocessor or even System-on-Chip can be improved by using a fault-tolerant pulse propagation design. The existing design TRIX achieves this goal by being a distributed system consisting of very simple nodes. We show that even in the typical mode of operation without faults, TRIX performs significantly better than a regular wire or clock tree: Statistical evaluation of our simulated experiments show that we achieve a skew with standard deviation of O(log log H), where H is the height of the TRIX grid. The distance-r generalization of classic graph problems can give us insights on how distance affects hardness of a problem. For the distance-r dominating set problem, we present both an algorithmic upper and unconditional lower bound for any graph class with certain high-girth and sparseness criteria. In particular, our algorithm achieves a O(r·f(r))-approximation in time O(r), where f is the expansion function, which correlates with density. For constant r, this implies a constant approximation factor, in constant time. We also show that no algorithm can achieve a (2r + 1 − δ)-approximation for any δ > 0 in time O(r), not even on the class of cycles of girth at least 5r. Furthermore, we extend the algorithm to related graph cover problems and even to a different execution model. Furthermore, we investigate the problem of packet forwarding, which addresses the question of how and when best to forward packets in a distributed system. These packets are injected by an adversary. We build on the existing algorithm OED to handle more than a single destination. In particular, we show that buffers of size O(log n) are sufficient for this algorithm, in contrast to O(n) for the naive approach.Wir untersuchen verteilte Systeme, mit besonderem Augenmerk auf Graphenprobleme und Fehlertoleranz. Fehlertoleranz auf einem System-on-Chip (SoC) kann durch eine fehlertolerante Puls- Weiterleitung verbessert werden. Das bestehende Puls-Weiterleitungs-System TRIX toleriert Fehler indem es ein verteiltes System ist das nur aus sehr einfachen Knoten besteht. Wir zeigen dass selbst im typischen, fehlerfreien Fall TRIX sich weitaus besser verhält als man naiverweise erwarten würde: Statistische Analysen unserer simulierten Experimente zeigen, dass der Verzögerungs-Unterschied eine Standardabweichung von lediglich O(log logH) erreicht, wobei H die Höhe des TRIX-Netzes ist. Das Generalisieren einiger klassischer Graphen-Probleme auf Distanz r kann uns neue Erkenntnisse bescheren über den Zusammenhang zwischen Distanz und Komplexität eines Problems. Für das Problem der dominierenden Mengen auf Distanz r zeigen wir sowohl eine algorithmische obere Schranke als auch eine bedingungsfreie untere Schranke für jede Klasse von Graphen, die bestimmte Eigenschaften an Umfang und Dichte erfüllt. Konkret erreicht unser Algorithmus in Zeit O(r) eine Annäherungsgüte von O(r · f(r)). Für konstante r bedeutet das, dass der Algorithmus in konstanter Zeit eine Annäherung konstanter Güte erreicht. Weiterhin zeigen wir, dass kein Algorithmus in Zeit O(r) eine Annäherungsgüte besser als 2r + 1 erreichen kann, nicht einmal in der Klasse der Kreis-Graphen von Umfang mindestens 5r. Weiterhin haben wir das Paketweiterleitungs-Problem untersucht, welches sich mit der Frage beschäftigt, wann genau Pakete in einem verteilten System idealerweise weitergeleitetwerden sollten. Die Paketewerden dabei von einem Gegenspieler eingefügt. Wir bauen auf dem existierenden Algorithmus OED auf, um mehr als ein Paket-Ziel beliefern zu können. Dadurch zeigen wir, dass Paket-Speicher der Größe O(log n) für dieses Problem ausreichen, im Gegensatz zu den Paket-Speichern der Größe O(n) die für einen naiven Ansatz nötig wären

    Energy-Efficient Digital Circuit Design using Threshold Logic Gates

    abstract: Improving energy efficiency has always been the prime objective of the custom and automated digital circuit design techniques. As a result, a multitude of methods to reduce power without sacrificing performance have been proposed. However, as the field of design automation has matured over the last few decades, there have been no new automated design techniques, that can provide considerable improvements in circuit power, leakage and area. Although emerging nano-devices are expected to replace the existing MOSFET devices, they are far from being as mature as semiconductor devices and their full potential and promises are many years away from being practical. The research described in this dissertation consists of four main parts. First is a new circuit architecture of a differential threshold logic flipflop called PNAND. The PNAND gate is an edge-triggered multi-input sequential cell whose next state function is a threshold function of its inputs. Second a new approach, called hybridization, that replaces flipflops and parts of their logic cones with PNAND cells is described. The resulting \hybrid circuit, which consists of conventional logic cells and PNANDs, is shown to have significantly less power consumption, smaller area, less standby power and less power variation. Third, a new architecture of a field programmable array, called field programmable threshold logic array (FPTLA), in which the standard lookup table (LUT) is replaced by a PNAND is described. The FPTLA is shown to have as much as 50% lower energy-delay product compared to conventional FPGA using well known FPGA modeling tool called VPR. Fourth, a novel clock skewing technique that makes use of the completion detection feature of the differential mode flipflops is described. This clock skewing method improves the area and power of the ASIC circuits by increasing slack on timing paths. An additional advantage of this method is the elimination of hold time violation on given short paths. Several circuit design methodologies such as retiming and asynchronous circuit design can use the proposed threshold logic gate effectively. Therefore, the use of threshold logic flipflops in conventional design methodologies opens new avenues of research towards more energy-efficient circuits.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Computer Science 201

    Circuit design and analysis for on-FPGA communication systems

    On-chip communication system has emerged as a prominently important subject in Very-Large- Scale-Integration (VLSI) design, as the trend of technology scaling favours logics more than interconnects. Interconnects often dictates the system performance, and, therefore, research for new methodologies and system architectures that deliver high-performance communication services across the chip is mandatory. The interconnect challenge is exacerbated in Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), as a type of ASIC where the hardware can be programmed post-fabrication. Communication across an FPGA will be deteriorating as a result of interconnect scaling. The programmable fabrics, switches and the specific routing architecture also introduce additional latency and bandwidth degradation further hindering intra-chip communication performance. Past research efforts mainly focused on optimizing logic elements and functional units in FPGAs. Communication with programmable interconnect received little attention and is inadequately understood. This thesis is among the first to research on-chip communication systems that are built on top of programmable fabrics and proposes methodologies to maximize the interconnect throughput performance. There are three major contributions in this thesis: (i) an analysis of on-chip interconnect fringing, which degrades the bandwidth of communication channels due to routing congestions in reconfigurable architectures; (ii) a new analogue wave signalling scheme that significantly improves the interconnect throughput by exploiting the fundamental electrical characteristics of the reconfigurable interconnect structures. This new scheme can potentially mitigate the interconnect scaling challenges. (iii) a novel Dynamic Programming (DP)-network to provide adaptive routing in network-on-chip (NoC) systems. The DP-network architecture performs runtime optimization for route planning and dynamic routing which, effectively utilizes the in-silicon bandwidth. This thesis explores a new horizon in reconfigurable system design, in which new methodologies and concepts are proposed to enhance the on-FPGA communication throughput performance that is of vital importance in new technology processes

    Hazard-free clock synchronization

    The growing complexity of microprocessors makes it infeasible to distribute a single clock source over the whole processor with a small clock skew. Hence, chips are split into multiple clock regions, each covered by a single clock source. This poses a problem for communication between these clock regions. Clock synchronization algorithms promise an advantage over state-of-the-art solutions, such as GALS systems. When clock regions are synchronous the communication latency improves significantly over handshake-based solutions. We focus on the implementation of clock synchronization algorithms. A major obstacle when implementing circuits on clock domain crossings are hazardous signals. We can formally define hazards by extending the Boolean logic by a third value u. In this thesis, we describe a theory for designing and analyzing hazard-free circuits. We develop strategies for hazard-free encoding and construction of hazard-free circuits from finite state machines. Furthermore, we discuss clock synchronization algorithms and a possible combination of them. In the end, we present two implementations of the GCS algorithm by Lenzen, Locher, and Wattenhofer (JACM 2010). We prove by rigorous analysis that the systems implement the algorithm. The theory described above is used to prove that our clock synchronization circuits are hazard-free (in the sense that they compute the most precise output possible). Simulation of our GCS system shows that it achieves a skew between neighboring clock regions that is smaller than a few inverter delays.Aufgrund der zunehmenden Komplexität von Mikroprozessoren ist es unmöglich, mit einer einzigen Taktquelle den gesamten Prozessor ohne großen Versatz zu takten. Daher werden Chips in mehrere Regionen aufgeteilt, die jeweils von einer einzelnen Taktquelle abgedeckt werden. Dies stellt ein Problem für die Kommunikation zwischen diesen Taktregionen dar. Algorithmen zur Taktsynchronisation bieten einen Vorteil gegenüber aktuellen Lösungen, wie z.B. GALS-Systemen. Synchronisiert man die Taktregionen, so verbessert sich die Latenz der Kommunikation erheblich. In Schaltkreisen zwischen zwei Taktregionen können undefinierte Signale, sogenannte Hazards auftreten. Indem wir die boolesche Algebra um einen dritten Wert u erweitern, können wir diese Hazards formal definieren. In dieser Arbeit zeigen wir eine Methode zum Entwurf und zur Analyse von hazard-freien Schaltungen. Wir entwickeln Strategien für Kodierungen die Hazards vermeiden und zur Konstruktion von hazard-freien Schaltungen. Darüber hinaus stellen wir Algorithmen Taktsynchronisation vor und wie diese kombiniert werden können. Zum Schluss stellen wir zwei Implementierungen des GCS-Algorithmus von Lenzen, Locher und Wattenhofer (JACM 2010) vor. Oben genannte Mechanismen werden verwendet, um formal zu beweisen, dass diese Implementierungen korrekt sind. Die Implementierung hat keine Hazards, das heißt sie berechnet die bestmo ̈gliche Ausgabe. Anschließende Simulation der GCS Implementierung erzielt einen Versatz zwischen benachbarten Taktregionen, der kleiner als ein paar Gatter-Laufzeiten ist
