    A B-ISDN-compatible modem/codec

    Coded modulation techniques for development of a broadband integrated services digital network (B-ISDN)-compatible modem/codec are investigated. The selected baseband processor system must support transmission of 155.52 Mbit/s of data over an INTELSAT 72-MHz transponder. Performance objectives and fundamental system parameters, including channel symbol rate, code rate, and the modulation scheme are determined. From several candidate codes, a concatenated coding system consisting of a coded octal phase shift keying modulation as the inner code and a high rate Reed-Solomon as the outer code is selected and its bit error rate performance is analyzed by computer simulation. The hardware implementation of the decoder for the selected code is also described

    A study of multilevel partial response signalling for transmission in a basic supergroup bandwidth

    Includes bibliographical references.The work in this thesis is primarily directed toward the design, construction and testing of an experimental multilevel partial response signalling baseband system. The system will find practical application in existing frequency division multiplexed-frequency modulated microwave links. The basic supergroup bandwidth of these links is 240 kHz. The design requires a transmission rate of 1.024 Mb/s in this bandwidth. Class-4 15 partial response signalling is the coding technique suitable to achieve this. A pilot tone scheme is used to facilitate symbol timing recovery at the demodulator. A sixth order Butterworth low pass filter approximates the ideal raised-cosine Nyquist channel. A theoretical discussion on impairments caused by deviation from this channel is given. Since the experimental system was non-ideal, it produced a degradation in the channel signal to noise ratio. This degradation, coupled with other factors, showed that further development was necessary for the system to be suitable for connection into an existing microwave link

    High-Speed Communications Over Polymer Optical Fibers for In-Building Cabling and Home Networking

    This paper focuses on high-speed cabling using polymer optical fibers (POF) in home networking. In particular, we report about the results obtained in the POF-ALL European Project, which is relevant to the Sixth Framework Program, and after two years of the European Project POF-PLUS, which is relevant to the Seventh Framework Program, focusing on their research activities about the use of poly-metyl-metha-acrilate step-index optical fibers for home applications. In particular, for that which concerns POF-ALL, we will describe eight-level pulse amplitude modulation (8-PAM) and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) approaches for 100-Mb/s transmission over a target distance of 300 m, while for that which concerns POF-PLUS, we will describe a fully digital and a mixed analog-digital solution, both based on intensity modulation direct detection, for transmitting 1 Gb/s over a target distance of 50 m. The ultimate experimental results from the POF-ALL project will be given, while for POF-PLUS, which is still ongoing, we will only show our most recent preliminary results

    The truth about 2-level transition elimination in bang-bang PAM-4 CDRs

    Reception of 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) requires a clock and data recovery (CDR) circuit, typically implemented by a PLL-like structure. An essential block in such a CDR is the phase detector which should detect whether the recovered clock leads or lags the incoming data edges. In typical implementations an incoming data edge is detected by sensing whether the incoming waveform crosses a data threshold level. However, there is some ambiguity in detecting the incoming data edge because PAM-4 modulation has 3 thresholds. If the waveform crosses multiple threshold levels, the level crossings will occur at different time instants due to the finite rise/fall time of the incoming waveform. In this work, we first analyze qualitatively and quantitatively CDR systems that use one threshold for phase adjustment. Here, eliminating the 2-level transitions decreases the amount of jitter injected by the phase detector. However, the available transitions for phase adjustment are also reduced, which lowers the CDR's robustness. Secondly, for CDR systems using three thresholds, a combination of two techniques: majority voting and elimination of 2-level transitions is investigated. We prove that in this case, the elimination of 2-level transitions is not needed and even gives a worse performance when implemented

    System and method for transferring data on a data link

    A system and method are provided for transferring a packet across a data link. The packet may include a stream of data symbols which is delimited by one or more framing symbols. Corruptions of the framing symbol which result in valid data symbols may be mapped to invalid symbols. If it is desired to transfer one of the valid data symbols that has been mapped to an invalid symbol, the data symbol may be replaced with an unused symbol. At the receiving end, these unused symbols are replaced with the corresponding valid data symbols. The data stream of the packet may be encoded with forward error correction information to detect and correct errors in the data stream
