    Classifying and Grouping Mammography Images into Communities Using Fisher Information Networks to Assist the Diagnosis of Breast Cancer

The aim of this paper is to build a computer based clinical decision support tool using a semi-supervised framework, the Fisher Information Network (FIN), for visualization of a set of mammographic images. The FIN organizes the images into a similarity network from which, for any new image, reference images that are closely related can be identified. This enables clinicians to review not just the reference images but also ancillary information e.g. about response to therapy. The Fisher information metric defines a Riemannian space where distances reflect similarity with respect to a given probability distribution. This metric is informed about generative properties of data, and hence assesses the importance of directions in space of parameters. It automatically performs feature relevance detection. This approach focusses on the interpretability of the model from the standpoint of the clinical user. Model predictions were validated using the prevalence of classes in each of the clusters identified by the FIN

Considerando que a presença de um dermatologista em tempo integral não é economicamente viável para muitas cidades e especialmente em comunidades carentes, ferramentas de auxílio ao diagnóstico para a triagem do melanoma têm sido um tópico de pesquisa ativo. Muitos trabalhos existentes são baseados no modelo Bag-of-Visual-Words (BoVW), combinando descritores de cor e textura. No entanto, o modelo BoVW vem se aprimorando e hoje existem várias extensões que levam a melhores taxas de acerto em tarefas gerais de classificação de imagens. Estes modelos avançados ainda não foram explorados para rastreio de melanoma, motivando assim este trabalho. Aqui nós apresentamos uma nova abordagem para rastreio de melanoma baseado nos descritores BossaNova, que são estado-da-arte, mostrando resultados muito promissores, com uma AUC de 93,7%. Este trabalho também propõe uma nova estratégia de pooling espacial especialmente desenhada para rastreio de melanoma. Outra contribuição dessa pesquisa é o uso inédito do BossaNova na classificação de melanoma. Isso abre oportunidades de exploração deste descritor em outros contextos médicosAbstract: Melanoma is the type of skin cancer that most leads to death, even being the most curable, if detected early. Since the presence of a full time dermatologist is not economical feasible for many small cities and specially in underserved communities, computer-aided diagnosis for melanoma screening has been a topic of active research. Much of the existing art is based on the Bag-of-Visual-Words (BoVW) model, combining color and texture descriptors. However, the BoVW model has been improving and nowadays there are several extensions that perform better classification rates in general image classification tasks. These enhanced models were not explored yet for melanoma screening, thus motivating our work. Here we present a new approach for melanoma screening, based upon the state-of-the-art BossaNova descriptors, showing very promising results for screening, reaching an AUC of up to 93.7%. This work also proposes a new spatial pooling strategy specially designed for melanoma screening. Other contribution of this research is the unprecedented use of BossaNova in melanoma classification.     Visualizing Set Relations and Cardinalities Using Venn and Euler Diagrams

    In medicine, genetics, criminology and various other areas, Venn and Euler diagrams are used to visualize data set relations and their cardinalities. The data sets are represented by closed curves and the data set relationships are depicted by the overlaps between these curves. Both the sets and their intersections are easily visible as the closed curves are preattentively processed and form common regions that have a strong perceptual grouping effect. Besides set relations such as intersection, containment and disjointness, the cardinality of the sets and their intersections can also be depicted in the same diagram (referred to as area-proportional) through the size of the curves and their overlaps. Size is a preattentive feature and so similarities, differences and trends are easily identified. Thus, such diagrams facilitate data analysis and reasoning about the sets. However, drawing these diagrams manually is difficult, often impossible, and current automatic drawing methods do not always produce appropriate diagrams. This dissertation presents novel automatic drawing methods for different types of Euler diagrams and a user study of how such diagrams can help probabilistic judgement. The main drawing algorithms are: eulerForce, which uses a force-directed approach to lay out Euler diagrams; eulerAPE, which draws area-proportional Venn diagrams with ellipses. The user study evaluated the effectiveness of area- proportional Euler diagrams, glyph representations, Euler diagrams with glyphs and text+visualization formats for Bayesian reasoning, and a method eulerGlyphs was devised to automatically and accurately draw the assessed visualizations for any Bayesian problem. Additionally, analytic algorithms that instantaneously compute the overlapping areas of three general intersecting ellipses are provided, together with an evaluation of the effectiveness of ellipses in drawing accurate area-proportional Venn diagrams for 3-set data and the characteristics of the data that can be depicted accurately with ellipses
