Self-Selective Correlation Ship Tracking Method for Smart Ocean System
In recent years, with the development of the marine industry, navigation
environment becomes more complicated. Some artificial intelligence
technologies, such as computer vision, can recognize, track and count the
sailing ships to ensure the maritime security and facilitates the management
for Smart Ocean System. Aiming at the scaling problem and boundary effect
problem of traditional correlation filtering methods, we propose a
self-selective correlation filtering method based on box regression (BRCF). The
proposed method mainly include: 1) A self-selective model with negative samples
mining method which effectively reduces the boundary effect in strengthening
the classification ability of classifier at the same time; 2) A bounding box
regression method combined with a key points matching method for the scale
prediction, leading to a fast and efficient calculation. The experimental
results show that the proposed method can effectively deal with the problem of
ship size changes and background interference. The success rates and precisions
were higher than Discriminative Scale Space Tracking (DSST) by over 8
percentage points on the marine traffic dataset of our laboratory. In terms of
processing speed, the proposed method is higher than DSST by nearly 22 Frames
Per Second (FPS)
Ship Detection and Segmentation using Image Correlation
There have been intensive research interests in ship detection and
segmentation due to high demands on a wide range of civil applications in the
last two decades. However, existing approaches, which are mainly based on
statistical properties of images, fail to detect smaller ships and boats.
Specifically, known techniques are not robust enough in view of inevitable
small geometric and photometric changes in images consisting of ships. In this
paper a novel approach for ship detection is proposed based on correlation of
maritime images. The idea comes from the observation that a fine pattern of the
sea surface changes considerably from time to time whereas the ship appearance
basically keeps unchanged. We want to examine whether the images have a common
unaltered part, a ship in this case. To this end, we developed a method -
Focused Correlation (FC) to achieve robustness to geometric distortions of the
image content. Various experiments have been conducted to evaluate the

Challenges in video based object detection in maritime scenario using computer vision
This paper discusses the technical challenges in maritime image processing
and machine vision problems for video streams generated by cameras. Even well
documented problems of horizon detection and registration of frames in a video
are very challenging in maritime scenarios. More advanced problems of
background subtraction and object detection in video streams are very
challenging. Challenges arising from the dynamic nature of the background,
unavailability of static cues, presence of small objects at distant
backgrounds, illumination effects, all contribute to the challenges as

High-level feature detection from video in TRECVid: a 5-year retrospective of achievements
Successful and effective content-based access to digital
video requires fast, accurate and scalable methods to determine the video content automatically. A variety of contemporary approaches to this rely on text taken from speech within the video, or on matching one video frame against others using low-level characteristics like
colour, texture, or shapes, or on determining and matching objects appearing within the video. Possibly the most important technique, however, is one which determines the presence or absence of a high-level or semantic feature, within a video clip or shot. By utilizing dozens, hundreds or even thousands of such semantic features we can support many kinds of content-based video navigation. Critically however, this depends on being able to determine whether each feature is or is not present in a video clip.
The last 5 years have seen much progress in the development of techniques to determine the presence of semantic features within video. This progress can be tracked in the annual TRECVid benchmarking activity where dozens of research groups measure the effectiveness of their techniques on common data and using an open, metrics-based approach. In this chapter we summarise the work
done on the TRECVid high-level feature task, showing the
progress made year-on-year. This provides a fairly comprehensive statement on where the state-of-the-art is regarding this important task, not just for one research group or for one approach, but across the spectrum. We then use this past and on-going work as a basis for highlighting the trends that are emerging in this area, and the questions which remain to be addressed before we can

Automatic detection, tracking and counting of birds in marine video content
Robust automatic detection of moving objects in a marine context is a multi-faceted problem due to the complexity of the observed scene. The dynamic nature of the sea caused by waves, boat wakes, and weather conditions poses huge challenges for the development of a stable background model. Moreover, camera motion, reflections, lightning and illumination changes may contribute to false detections. Dynamic background subtraction (DBGS) is widely considered as a solution to tackle this issue in the scope of vessel detection for maritime traffic analysis. In this paper, the DBGS techniques suggested for ships are investigated and optimized for the monitoring and tracking of birds in marine video content. In addition to background subtraction, foreground candidates are filtered by a classifier based on their feature descriptors in order to remove non-bird objects. Different types of classifiers have been evaluated and results on a ground truth labeled dataset of challenging video fragments show similar levels of precision and recall of about 95% for the best performing classifier. The remaining foreground items are counted and birds are tracked along the video sequence using spatio-temporal motion prediction. Are object detection assessment criteria ready for maritime computer vision?
Maritime vessels equipped with visible and infrared cameras can complement
other conventional sensors for object detection. However, application of
computer vision techniques in maritime domain received attention only recently.
The maritime environment offers its own unique requirements and challenges.
Assessment of the quality of detections is a fundamental need in computer
vision. However, the conventional assessment metrics suitable for usual object
detection are deficient in the maritime setting. Thus, a large body of related
work in computer vision appears inapplicable to the maritime setting at the
first sight. We discuss the problem of defining assessment metrics suitable for
maritime computer vision. We consider new bottom edge proximity metrics as
assessment metrics for maritime computer vision. These metrics indicate that
existing computer vision approaches are indeed promising for maritime computer
vision and can play a foundational role in the emerging field of maritime
computer vision

TRECVID 2008 - goals, tasks, data, evaluation mechanisms and metrics
The TREC Video Retrieval Evaluation (TRECVID) 2008 is a TREC-style video analysis and retrieval evaluation, the goal of which remains to promote progress in content-based exploitation of digital video via open, metrics-based evaluation. Over the last 7 years this effort has yielded a
better understanding of how systems can effectively accomplish such processing and how one can reliably benchmark their performance. In 2008, 77 teams (see Table 1) from various research organizations --- 24 from
Asia, 39 from Europe, 13 from North America, and 1 from Australia --- participated in one or more of five tasks: high-level feature extraction, search (fully automatic, manually assisted, or interactive), pre-production video (rushes) summarization, copy detection, or surveillance event detection. The copy detection and surveillance event detection tasks are being run for the first time in TRECVID.
