Use of Rock Mass Rating (RMR) values for support designs of tunnels excavated in soft rocks without squeezing problem
Effect of the rock material strength on the RMR value and tunnel support designs were investigated within this study including site works, analytical and numerical analyses. It was found that rock material strength effect is quite limited in the RMR method to determine an accurate rock mass class to design tunnel support. Since the limitation, rock mass classes are evaluated to be usually misleading and supports designed in accordance with the RMR value are insufficient for tunnels excavated in rock masses with low strength values of rock materials. Totally, five different tunnels in Turkey have been supported using a new strength adjustment factor calculated in consideration of the in-situ stress and the uniaxial compressive strength values of rock materials. OSHI - Open Source Hybrid IP/SDN networking (and its emulation on Mininet and on distributed SDN testbeds)
The introduction of SDN in IP backbones requires the coexistence of regular
IP forwarding and SDN based forwarding. The former is typically applied to best
effort Internet traffic, the latter can be used for different types of advanced
services (VPNs, Virtual Leased Lines, Traffic Engineering...). In this paper we
first introduce the architecture and the services of an "hybrid" IP/SDN
networking scenario. Then we describe the design and implementation of an Open
Source Hybrid IP/SDN (OSHI) node. It combines Quagga for OSPF routing and Open
vSwitch for OpenFlow based switching on Linux. The availability of tools for
experimental validation and performance evaluation of SDN solutions is
fundamental for the evolution of SDN. We provide a set of open source tools
that allow to facilitate the design of hybrid IP/SDN experimental networks,
their deployment on Mininet or on distributed SDN research testbeds and their
test. Finally, using the provided tools, we evaluate key performance aspects of
the proposed solutions. The OSHI development and test environment is available

Map++: A Crowd-sensing System for Automatic Map Semantics Identification
Digital maps have become a part of our daily life with a number of commercial
and free map services. These services have still a huge potential for
enhancement with rich semantic information to support a large class of mapping
applications. In this paper, we present Map++, a system that leverages standard
cell-phone sensors in a crowdsensing approach to automatically enrich digital
maps with different road semantics like tunnels, bumps, bridges, footbridges,
crosswalks, road capacity, among others. Our analysis shows that cell-phones
sensors with humans in vehicles or walking get affected by the different road
features, which can be mined to extend the features of both free and commercial
mapping services. We present the design and implementation of Map++ and
evaluate it in a large city. Our evaluation shows that we can detect the
different semantics accurately with at most 3% false positive rate and 6% false
negative rate for both vehicle and pedestrian-based features. Moreover, we show
that Map++ has a small energy footprint on the cell-phones, highlighting its

A Tunnel-aware Language for Network Packet Filtering
Abstract—While in computer networks the number of possible protocol encapsulations is growing day after day, network administrators face ever increasing difficulties in selecting accurately the traffic they need to inspect. This is mainly caused by the limited number of encapsulations supported by currently available tools and the difficulty to exactly specify which packets have to be analyzed, especially in presence of tunneled traffic. This paper presents a novel packet processing language that, besides Boolean filtering predicates, introduces special constructs for handling the more complex situations of tunneled and stacked encapsulations, giving the user a finer control over the semantics of a filtering expression. Even though this language is principally focused on packet filters, it is designed to support other advanced packet processing mechanisms such as traffic classification and field extraction. I
Introducing the STAMP method in road tunnel safety assessment
After the tremendous accidents in European road tunnels over the past decade, many risk assessment methods have been proposed worldwide, most of them based on Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA). Although QRAs are helpful to address physical aspects and facilities of tunnels, current approaches in the road tunnel field have limitations to model organizational aspects, software behavior and the adaptation of the tunnel system over time. This paper reviews the aforementioned limitations and highlights the need to enhance the safety assessment process of these critical infrastructures with a complementary approach that links the organizational factors to the operational and technical issues, analyze software behavior and models the dynamics of the tunnel system. To achieve this objective, this paper examines the scope for introducing a safety assessment method which is based on the systems thinking paradigm and draws upon the STAMP model. The method proposed is demonstrated through a case study of a tunnel ventilation system and the results show that it has the potential to identify scenarios that encompass both the technical system and the organizational structure. However, since the method does not provide quantitative estimations of risk, it is recommended to be used as a complementary approach to the traditional risk assessments rather than as an alternative. Railway freight transport and logistics: Methods for relief, algorithms for verification and proposals for the adjustment of tunnel inner surfaces
In Europe, the attention to efficiency and safety of international railway freight transport has grown in recent years and this has drawn attention to the importance of verifying the clearance between vehicle and lining, mostly when different and variable rolling stock types are expected. This work consists of defining an innovative methodology, with the objective of surveying the tunnel structures, verifying the clearance conditions, and designing a retrofitting work if necessary. The method provides for the use of laser scanner, thermocameras, and ground penetrating radar to survey the geometrical and structural conditions of the tunnel; an algorithm written by the authors permits to verify the clearances. Two different types of works are possible if the inner tunnel surfaces interfere with the profile of the rolling stock passing through: modification of the railroad track or modification of the tunnel intrados by mean milling of its lining. The presented case study demonstrates that the proposed methodology is useful for verifying compatibility between the design vehicle gauge and the existing tunnel intrados, and to investigate the chance to admit rolling stocks from different states. Consequently, the results give the railway management body a chance to perform appropriate measurements in those cases where the minimum clearance requirements are not achieved
Hydrogeological challenges in a low carbon economy
Hydrogeology has traditionally been regarded as the province of the water industry, but it is increasingly finding novel applications in the energy sector. Hydrogeology has a longstanding role in geothermal energy exploration and management. Although aquifer management methods can be directly applied to most high-enthalpy geothermal reservoirs, hydrogeochemical inference techniques differ somewhat owing to peculiarities of high-temperature processes. Hydrogeological involvement in the development of ground-coupled heating and cooling systems using heat pumps has led to the emergence of the sub-discipline now known as thermogeology. The patterns of groundwater flow and heat transport are closely analogous and can thus be analysed using very similar techniques. Without resort to heat pumps, groundwater is increasingly being pumped to provide cooling for large buildings; the renewability of such systems relies on accurate prediction and management of thermal breakthrough from reinjection to production boreholes. Hydrogeological analysis can contribute to quantification of accidental carbon emissions arising from disturbance of groundwater-fed peatland ecosystems during wind farm construction. Beyond renewables, key applications of hydrogeology are to be found in the nuclear sector, and in the sunrise industries of unconventional gas and carbon capture and storage, with high temperatures attained during underground coal gasification requiring geothermal technology transfer
Quantitative risk analysis for road tunnels complying with EU regulations
Tunnels have improved the connection of regions within the European Commission (EC) and have been used lately as a catalyst for economic development of previously isolated regions. However, the increasing number of these important infrastructures is raising upfront an endogenous problem, which is the severity of accidents that may occur. These risks have much greater impact when heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) or dangerous goods (DGs) are involved in the accident. As a result, the EC launched the EC Directive 2004/54/EC. In order to achieve a minimum acceptable level of safety, the EC Directive 2004/54/EC suggests, apart from the measures imposed based on tunnel characteristics, the implementation of a risk analysis in cases such as the opening of the road tunnel to DGs. The most widely accepted method for such quantitative risk analysis (QRA) is the OECD/PIARC QRA Model. This research exploits the QRA Model to perform a QRA for five illustrative cases in order to explore the sufficiency of the minimum tunnel safety measures imposed by the Directive when transportation of HGVs and DGs is allowed through the tunnel. The research concludes that, at least for tunnels with marginal values of the EC Directive classes for length and traffic, the risk exposure (F/N curves) lays over the acceptable safety limits of ALARP (as low as reasonably practicable) models. Thus, the manager of the tunnel should take seriously into account the provision of the Directive for further risk analysis and consider more safety measures as well as take into account the risk associated with the alternative routes
