Classification of twitter accounts into automated agents and human users
© 2017 Association for Computing Machinery. Online social networks (OSNs) have seen a remarkable rise in the presence of surreptitious automated accounts. Massive human user-base and business-supportive operating model of social networks (such as Twitter) facilitates the creation of automated agents. In this paper we outline a systematic methodology and train a classifier to categorise Twitter accounts into ‘automated’ and ‘human’ users. To improve classification accuracy we employ a set of novel steps. First, we divide the dataset into four popularity bands to compensate for differences in types of accounts. Second, we create a large ground truth dataset using human annotations and extract relevant features from raw tweets. To judge accuracy of the procedure we calculate agreement among human annotators as well as with a bot detection research tool. We then apply a Random Forests classifier that achieves an accuracy close to human agreement. Finally, as a concluding step we perform tests to measure the efficacy of our results
A Socio-Informatic Approach to Automated Account Classification on Social Media
Automated accounts on social media have become increasingly problematic. We
propose a key feature in combination with existing methods to improve machine
learning algorithms for bot detection. We successfully improve classification

A Network Topology Approach to Bot Classification
Automated social agents, or bots, are increasingly becoming a problem on
social media platforms. There is a growing body of literature and multiple
tools to aid in the detection of such agents on online social networking
platforms. We propose that the social network topology of a user would be
sufficient to determine whether the user is a automated agent or a human. To
test this, we use a publicly available dataset containing users on Twitter
labelled as either automated social agent or human. Using an unsupervised
machine learning approach, we obtain a detection accuracy rate of 70%
Influence of augmented humans in online interactions during voting events
The advent of the digital era provided a fertile ground for the development
of virtual societies, complex systems influencing real-world dynamics.
Understanding online human behavior and its relevance beyond the digital
boundaries is still an open challenge. Here we show that online social
interactions during a massive voting event can be used to build an accurate map
of real-world political parties and electoral ranks. We provide evidence that
information flow and collective attention are often driven by a special class
of highly influential users, that we name "augmented humans", who exploit
thousands of automated agents, also known as bots, for enhancing their online
influence. We show that augmented humans generate deep information cascades, to
the same extent of news media and other broadcasters, while they uniformly
infiltrate across the full range of identified groups. Digital augmentation
represents the cyber-physical counterpart of the human desire to acquire power

Social Bots: Human-Like by Means of Human Control?
Social bots are currently regarded an influential but also somewhat
mysterious factor in public discourse and opinion making. They are considered
to be capable of massively distributing propaganda in social and online media
and their application is even suspected to be partly responsible for recent
election results. Astonishingly, the term `Social Bot' is not well defined and
different scientific disciplines use divergent definitions. This work starts
with a balanced definition attempt, before providing an overview of how social
bots actually work (taking the example of Twitter) and what their current
technical limitations are. Despite recent research progress in Deep Learning
and Big Data, there are many activities bots cannot handle well. We then
discuss how bot capabilities can be extended and controlled by integrating
humans into the process and reason that this is currently the most promising

Bots increase exposure to negative and inflammatory content in online social systems
Societies are complex systems which tend to polarize into sub-groups of
individuals with dramatically opposite perspectives. This phenomenon is
reflected -- and often amplified -- in online social networks where, however,
humans are no more the only players, and co-exist alongside with social bots,
i.e., software-controlled accounts. Analyzing large-scale social data collected
during the Catalan referendum for independence on October 1, 2017, consisting
of nearly 4 millions Twitter posts generated by almost 1 million users, we
identify the two polarized groups of Independentists and Constitutionalists and
quantify the structural and emotional roles played by social bots. We show that
bots act from peripheral areas of the social system to target influential
humans of both groups, bombarding Independentists with violent contents,
increasing their exposure to negative and inflammatory narratives and
exacerbating social conflict online. Our findings stress the importance of
developing countermeasures to unmask these forms of automated social
