Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a global public health problem of enormous dimension. In this study, we aimed to discriminate between healthy people and people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Various studies revealed, that voice is one of the earliest indicator of PD, and for that reason, Parkinson dataset that contains biomedical voice of human is used. The main goal of this paper is to automatically detect whether the speech/voice of a person is affected by PD. We examined the performance of fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering and pattern recognition methods on Parkinson’s disease dataset. The first method has the main aim to distinguish performance between two classes, when trying to differentiate between normal speaking persons and speakers with PD. This method could greatly be improved by classifying data first and then testing new data using these two patterns. Thus, second method used here is pattern recognition. The experimental results have demonstrated that the combination of the fuzzy c-means method and pattern recognition obtained promising results for the classification of PD

Most neurological disorders that include Parkinson’s disease (PD) as well as other neurological diseases such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Huntington’s disease (HD) have some common abnormalities regarding the movement, vocal, and cognitive behaviors of sufferers. Variations in the manifestation of these types of abnormality help distinguish one disorder from another. In this study, differentiation was performed based on the gait characteristics of patients afflicted by different neurological disorders. In the recent past, many researchers have applied different machine learning and feature selection techniques to the classification of different groups of patients based on common abnormalities. However, in an era of modernization where the focus is on timely low-cost automatization and pattern recognition, such techniques require improvisation to provide high performance. We attempted to improve the performance of such techniques using different feature optimization methods, such as a genetic algorithm (GA) and principal component analysis (PCA), and applying different classification approaches, i.e., linear, nonlinear, and probabilistic classifiers. In this study, gait dynamics data of patients suffering with PD, ALS, and HD were collated from a public database, and a binary classification approach was used by taking PD as one group and adopting ALS+HD as another group. Performance comparison was achieved using different classification techniques that incorporated optimized feature sets obtained from GA and PCA. In comparison with other classifiers using different feature sets, the highest accuracy (97.87%) was obtained using random forest combined with GA-based feature sets. The results provide evidence that could assist medical practitioners in differentiating PD from other neurological diseases using gait characteristics

Parkinson’s disease (PD) has become one of the most common degenerative disorders of the central nervous system. In this study, our main goal was to discriminate between healthy people and people with Parkinson’s disease. In order to achieve this we used artificial neural networks, and dataset taken from University of California, Irvine machine learning database, having 48 normal and 147 PD cases. We examine the performance of neural network systems with back propagation together with a majority voting scheme. In order to train examples we used boosting by filtering technique with seven committee machines, and principal component analysis is used for data reduction. The experimental results have demonstrated that the combination of these proposed methods has obtained very good results with correct positive value of 92% on the classification of PD.

Feature Weighting Using a Clustering Approach

In recent decades, the volume and size of data has significantly increased with the growth of technology. Extracting knowledge and useful patterns in high-dimensional data are challenging. In fact, unrelated features and dimensions reduce the efficiency and increase the complexity of machine learning algorithms. However, the methods used for selecting features and weighting features are a common solution for these problems. In this study, a feature weighting approach is presented based on density-based clustering. This method has been implemented in two steps. In the first step, the features were divided into clusters using density-based clustering. In the second step, the features with a higher degree of importance were selected in accordance to the target class of each cluster. In order to evaluate the efficiency, various standard datasets were classified by the feature selection and their degree of importance. The results indicated that the simplicity and suitability of the method in the high-dimensional dataset are the main advantages of the proposed method

Feature selection technique is an important step in the prediction and classification process, primarily in data mining related aspects or related to medical field. Feature selection is immersive with the errand of choosing a subset of applicable features that could be utilized in developing a prototype. Medical datasets are huge in size; hence some effective optimization techniques are required to produce accurate results. Optimization algorithms are a critical function in medical data mining particularly in identifying diseases since it offers excellent effectiveness in minimum computational expense and time. The classification algorithms also produce superior outcomes when an objective function is built using the feature selection algorithm. The solitary motive of the research paper analysis is to comprehend the reach and utility of optimization algorithms such as the Genetic Algorithm (GA), the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) in the field of Health care. The aim is to bring efficiency and maximum optimization in the health care sector using the vast information that is already available related to these fields. With the help of data sets that are available in the health care analysis, our focus is to extract the most important features using optimization techniques and work on different algorithms so as to get the most optimized result. Precision largely depends on usefulness of features that are taken into consideration along with finding useful patterns in those features to characterize the main problem. The Performance of the optimized algorithm finds the overall optimum with less function evaluation. The principle target of this examination is to optimize feature selection technique to bring an optimized and efficient model to cater to various health issues. In this research paper, to do bibliometric analysis Scopus and Web of Science databases are used. This bibliometric analysis considers important keywords, datasets, significance of the considered research papers. It also gives details about types, sources of publications, yearly publication trends, significant countries from Scopus and Web of Science. Also, it captures details about co-appearing keywords, authors, source titles through networked diagrams. In a way, this research paper can be useful to researchers who want to contribute in the area of feature selection and optimization in healthcare. From this research paper it is observed that there is a lot scope for research for the considered research area. This kind of research will also be helpful for analyzing pandemic scenarios like COVID-19

From Fuzzy Expert System to Artificial Neural Network: Application to Assisted Speech Therapy

    Get PDF
This chapter addresses the following question: What are the advantages of extending a fuzzy expert system (FES) to an artificial neural network (ANN), within a computer‐based speech therapy system (CBST)? We briefly describe the key concepts underlying the principles behind the FES and ANN and their applications in assisted speech therapy. We explain the importance of an intelligent system in order to design an appropriate model for real‐life situations. We present data from 1‐year application of these concepts in the field of assisted speech therapy. Using an artificial intelligent system for improving speech would allow designing a training program for pronunciation, which can be individualized based on specialty needs, previous experiences, and the child\u27s prior therapeutical progress. Neural networks add a great plus value when dealing with data that do not normally match our previous designed pattern. Using an integrated approach that combines FES and ANN allows our system to accomplish three main objectives: (1) develop a personalized therapy program; (2) gradually replace some human expert duties; (3) use “self‐learning” capabilities, a component traditionally reserved for humans. The results demonstrate the viability of the hybrid approach in the context of speech therapy that can be extended when designing similar applications
