    A Multi-Objective Optimization Approach for Multi-Head Beam-Type Placement Machines

    Get PDF
This paper addresses a highly challenging scheduling problem in the field of printed circuit board (PCB) assembly systems using Surface Mounting Devices (SMD). After describing some challenging optimization sub-problems relating to the heads of multi-head surface mounting placement machines, we formulate an integrated multi-objective mathematical model considering of two main sub-problems simultaneously. The proposed model is a mixed integer nonlinear programming one which is very complex to be solved optimally. Therefore, it is first converted into a linearized model and then solved using an efficient multi-objective approach, i.e., the augmented epsilon constraint method. An illustrative example is also provided to show the usefulness and applicability of the proposed model and solution method.PCB assembly. Multi-head beam-type placement machine. Design of a WSN Platform for Long-Term Environmental Monitoring for IoT Applications

    Get PDF
The Internet of Things (IoT) provides a virtual view, via the Internet Protocol, to a huge variety of real life objects, ranging from a car, to a teacup, to a building, to trees in a forest. Its appeal is the ubiquitous generalized access to the status and location of any "thing" we may be interested in. Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are well suited for long-term environmental data acquisition for IoT representation. This paper presents the functional design and implementation of a complete WSN platform that can be used for a range of long-term environmental monitoring IoT applications. The application requirements for low cost, high number of sensors, fast deployment, long lifetime, low maintenance, and high quality of service are considered in the specification and design of the platform and of all its components. Low-effort platform reuse is also considered starting from the specifications and at all design levels for a wide array of related monitoring application

A hybrid surface mount component inspection system which includes both vision and infrared inspection techniques to determine the presence of surface mount components on a printed wiring board, and the quality of solder joints of surface mount components on printed wiring boards by using data level sensor fusion to combine data from two infrared sensors to obtain emissivity independent thermal signatures of solder joints, and using feature level sensor fusion with active perception to assemble and process inspection information from any number of sensors to determine characteristic feature sets of different defect classes to classify solder defects.Georgia Tech Research Corporatio

A Multi-Exchange Neighborhood Search Heuristic for an Integrated Clustering and Machine Setup Model for PCB Manufacturing

    Get PDF
In the manufacture of printed circuit boards, electronic components are attached to a blank board by one or more pick-and-place machines. Frequent machine setups, though time consuming, can reduce overall processing time. We consider the Integrated Clustering and Machine Setup (ICMS) model, which incorporates this tradeoff between processing time and setup time and seeks to minimize the sum of the two. Solving this model to optimality is intractable for very large-scale instances. We show that ICMS is NP-hard and consequently propose and test a heuristic based on multi-exchange neighborhood search structures. Initial numerical results are very encouraging. Development of a compact, IoT-enabled electronic nose for breath analysis

    Get PDF
In this paper, we report on an in-house developed electronic nose (E-nose) for use with breath analysis. The unit consists of an array of 10 micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) metal oxide (MOX) gas sensors produced by seven manufacturers. Breath sampling of end-tidal breath is achieved using a heated sample tube, capable of monitoring sampling-related parameters, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), humidity, and temperature. A simple mobile app was developed to receive real-time data from the device, using Wi-Fi communication. The system has been tested using chemical standards and exhaled breath samples from healthy volunteers, before and after taking a peppermint capsule. Results from chemical testing indicate that we can separate chemical standards (acetone, isopropanol and 1-propanol) and different concentrations of isobutylene. The analysis of exhaled breath samples demonstrate that we can distinguish between pre- and post-consumption of peppermint capsules; area under the curve (AUC): 0.81, sensitivity: 0.83 (0.59–0.96), specificity: 0.72 (0.47–0.90), p-value: <0.001. The functionality of the developed device has been demonstrated with the testing of chemical standards and a simplified breath study using peppermint capsules. It is our intention to deploy this system in a UK hospital in an upcoming breath research study

Discrete-Time Mixing Receiver Architecture for RF-Sampling Software-Defined Radio

    Get PDF
A discrete-time (DT) mixing architecture for RF-sampling receivers is presented. This architecture makes RF sampling more suitable for software-defined radio (SDR) as it achieves wideband quadrature demodulation and wideband harmonic rejection. The paper consists of two parts. In the first part, different downconversion techniques are classified and compared, leading to the definition of a DT mixing concept. The suitability of CT-mixing and RF-sampling receivers to SDR is also discussed. In the second part, we elaborate the DT-mixing architecture, which can be realized by de-multiplexing. Simulation shows a wideband 90° phase shift between I and Q outputs without systematic channel bandwidth limitation. Oversampling and harmonic rejection relaxes RF pre-filtering and reduces noise and interference folding. A proof-of-concept DT-mixing downconverter has been built in 65 nm CMOS, for 0.2 to 0.9 GHz RF band employing 8-times oversampling. It can reject 2nd to 6th harmonics by 40 dB typically and without systematic channel bandwidth limitation. Without an LNA, it achieves a gain of -0.5 to 2.5 dB, a DSB noise figure of 18 to 20 dB, an IIP3 = +10 dBm, and an IIP2 = +53 dBm, while consuming less than 19 mW including multiphase clock generation
