    A Supervised Machine Learning Model for Tool Condition Monitoring in Smart Manufacturing

    In the current industry 4.0 scenario, good quality cutting tools result in a good surface finish, minimum vibrations, low power consumption, and reduction of machining time. Monitoring tool wear plays a crucial role in manufacturing quality components. In addition to tool monitoring, wear prediction assists the manufacturing systems in making tool-changing decisions. This paper introduces an industrial use case supervised machine learning model to predict the turning tool wear. Cutting forces, the surface roughness of a specimen, and flank wear of tool insert are measured for corresponding spindle speed, feed rate, and depth of cut. Those turning test datasets are applied in machine learning for tool wear predictions. The test was conducted using SNMG TiN Coated Silicon Carbide tool insert in turning of EN8 steel specimen. The dataset of cutting forces, surface finish, and flank wear is extracted from 200 turning tests with varied spindle speed, feed rate, and depth of cut. Random forest regression, Support vector regression, K Nearest Neighbour regression machine learning algorithms are used to predict the tool wear. R squared, the technique shows the random forest machine learning model predicts the tool wear of 91.82% of accuracy validated with the experimental trials. The experimental results exhibit flank wear is mainly influenced by the feed rate followed by the spindle speed and depth of cut. The reduction of flank wear with a lower feed rate can be achieved with a good surface finish of the workpiece. The proposed model may be helpful in tool wear prediction and making tool-changing decisions, which leads to achieving good quality machined components. Moreover, the machine learning model is adaptable for industry 4.0 and cloud environments for intelligent manufacturing systems

    Data Mining techniques often ask for the resolution of optimization problems. Supervised Classification, and, in particular, Support Vector Machines, can be seen as a paradigmatic instance. In this paper, some links between Mathematical Optimization methods and Supervised Classification are emphasized. It is shown that many different areas of Mathematical Optimization play a central role in off-the-shelf Supervised Classification methods.     A Classification Framework for Imbalanced Data

    As information technology advances, the demands for developing a reliable and highly accurate predictive model from many domains are increasing. Traditional classification algorithms can be limited in their performance on highly imbalanced data sets. In this dissertation, we study two common problems when training data is imbalanced, and propose effective algorithms to solve them. Firstly, we investigate the problem in building a multi-class classification model from imbalanced class distribution. We develop an effective technique to improve the performance of the model by formulating the problem as a multi-class SVM with an objective to maximize G-mean value. A ramp loss function is used to simplify and solve the problem. Experimental results on multiple real-world datasets confirm that our new method can effectively solve the multi-class classification problem when the datasets are highly imbalanced. Secondly, we explore the problem in learning a global classification model from distributed data sources with privacy constraints. In this problem, not only data sources have different class distributions but combining data into one central data is also prohibited. We propose a privacy-preserving framework for building a global SVM from distributed data sources. Our new framework avoid constructing a global kernel matrix by mapping non-linear inputs to a linear feature space and then solve a distributed linear SVM from these virtual points. Our method can solve both imbalance and privacy problems while achieving the same level of accuracy as regular SVM. Finally, we extend our framework to handle high-dimensional data by utilizing Generalized Multiple Kernel Learning to select a sparse combination of features and kernels. This new model produces a smaller set of features, but yields much higher accuracy

    Development of track-driven agriculture robot with terrain classification functionality / Khairul Azmi Mahadhir

    Over the past years, many robots have been devised to facilitate agricultural activities (that are labor-intensive in nature) so that they can carry out tasks such as crop care or selective harvesting with minimum human supervision. It is commonly observed that rapid change in terrain conditions can jeopardize the performance and efficiency of a robot when performing agricultural activity. For instance, a terrain covered with gravel produces high vibration to robot when traversing on the surface. In this work, an agricultural robot is embedded with machine learning algorithm based on Support Vector Machine (SVM). The aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of the Support Vector Machine in recognizing different terrain conditions in an agriculture field. A test bed equipped with a tracked-driven robot and three types o f terrain i.e. sand, gravel and vegetation has been developed. A small and low power MEMS accelerometer is integrated into the robot for measuring the vertical acceleration. In this experiment, the vibration signals resulted from the interaction between the robot and the different type of terrain were collected. An extensive experimental study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of SVM. The results in terms of accuracy of two machine learning techniques based on terrain classification are analyzed and compared. The results show that the robot that is equipped with an SVM can recognize different terrain conditions effectively. Such capability enables the robot to traverse across changing terrain conditions without being trapped in the field. Hence, this research work contributes to develop a self-adaptive agricultural robot in coping with different terrain conditions with minimum human supervision

    Development of a Methodology for Condition-Based Maintenance in a Large-Scale Application Field

    This paper describes a methodology, developed by the authors, for condition monitoring and diagnostics of several critical components in the large-scale applications with machines. For industry, the main target of condition monitoring is to prevent the machine stopping suddenly and thus avoid economic losses due to lack of production. Once the target is reached at a local level, usually through an R&D project, the extension to a large-scale market gives rise to new goals, such as low computational costs for analysis, easily interpretable results by local technicians, collection of data from worldwide machine installations, and the development of historical datasets to improve methodology, etc. This paper details an approach to condition monitoring, developed together with a multinational corporation, that covers all the critical points mentioned above
