    This paper discusses the use of hypertext navigation tools in the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog), not only as the retrieval tools for bibliographic references, but also as user aid tools. These navigation tools are also called HIR - Hypertext Information Retrieval. The help to users is done by the navigation in the controlled vocabularies. In this context, we present some experiences and problems in using these navigation tools integrated with several classification and indexing systems. Trata da utilização das ferramentas de navegação hipertextual nos OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog), nĂŁo somente como ferramenta de busca das referĂȘncias bibliogrĂĄficas, mas tambĂ©m como ferramenta de ajuda aos usuĂĄrios.     This paper describes the attempts of the COHSE project to define and deploy a Conceptual Open Hypermedia Service. Consisting of ‱ an ontological reasoning service which is used to represent a sophisticated conceptual model of document terms and their relationships; ‱ a Web-based open hypermedia link service that can offer a range of different link-providing facilities in a scalable and non-intrusive fashion; and integrated to form a conceptual hypermedia system to enable documents to be linked via metadata describing their contents and hence to improve the consistency and breadth of linking of WWW documents at retrieval time (as readers browse the documents) and authoring time (as authors create the documents)

    Student reaction to parallel hypertext and menu‐based interfaces

    It is often necessary to consider the question of what sort of interface is most useful for retrieving information from a particular land of database. A small database of text‐based but multi‐faceted items is used here in order to compare ease and speed of retrieval from two commonly used combinations of interface — HyperCard on an Apple Macintosh and dBase III+ on a PC. For the restricted range of tasks employed here, the latter combination appears to be more acceptable to students with limited computer experience. However, in more general terms, the acceptability of an interface for information retrieval depends on what particular aspect of information retrieval is being emphasized, and what conceptual frameworks students bring to their tasks

    Methodologies for the Automatic Location of Academic and Educational Texts on the Internet

    Traditionally online databases of web resources have been compiled by a human editor, or though the submissions of authors or interested parties. Considerable resources are needed to maintain a constant level of input and relevance in the face of increasing material quantity and quality, and much of what is in databases is of an ephemeral nature. These pressures dictate that many databases stagnate after an initial period of enthusiastic data entry. The solution to this problem would seem to be the automatic harvesting of resources, however, this process necessitates the automatic classification of resources as ‘appropriate’ to a given database, a problem only solved by complex text content analysis. This paper outlines the component methodologies necessary to construct such an automated harvesting system, including a number of novel approaches. In particular this paper looks at the specific problems of automatically identifying academic research work and Higher Education pedagogic materials. Where appropriate, experimental data is presented from searches in the field of Geography as well as the Earth and Environmental Sciences. In addition, appropriate software is reviewed where it exists, and future directions are outlined

    Development and evaluation of clustering techniques for finding people

    Typically in a large organisation much expertise and knowledge is held informally within employees' own memories. When employees leave an organisation many documented links that go through that person are broken and no mechanism is usually available to overcome these broken links. This match making problem is related to the problem of finding potential work partners in a large and distributed organisation. This paper reports a comparative investigation into using standard information retrieval techniques to group employees together based on their webpages. This information can, hopefully, be subsequently used to redirect broken links to people who worked closely with a departed employee or used to highlight people, say indifferent departments, who work on similar topics. The paper reports the design and positive results of an experiment conducted at RisĂž National Laboratory comparing four different IR searching and clustering approaches using real users' web pages
