    World Heritage Classification and Related Issues—A Case Study of the “Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage”

    AbstractIn some international organizations and in many countries there have been obvious problems such as an unclear goal, ambiguous concepts, lack of theoretical framework and overlapping extensions in the classification of heritage, particularly in the classification of cultural heritage, and newly proposed typological classifications have even worsened the existing contradictions. This phenomenon shows that the science of heritage studies did not pay attention to its own theoretical framework and failed to build its methodology, bringing about much confusion in research, application and management of the heritages themselves. It is therefore necessary to re-categorize heritages according to their nature and functions, protection methods, management and exhibition requirements dictated by their different nature. In this paper, taking the authoritative “Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage” as example, we analyze the classification issues currently prevailing in heritage circles, state four principles which heritage classification should follow and put forward preliminary thoughts for the classification of heritages. At the same time, by an analysis of currently popular classifications, such as “cultural landscape”, we put forward new definitions of World Heritage categories, and the position it is proposed they take in the overall classification system

    Comparing Machine and Deep Learning Methods for Large 3D Heritage Semantic Segmentation

    In recent years semantic segmentation of 3D point clouds has been an argument that involves different fields of application. Cultural heritage scenarios have become the subject of this study mainly thanks to the development of photogrammetry and laser scanning techniques. Classification algorithms based on machine and deep learning methods allow to process huge amounts of data as 3D point clouds. In this context, the aim of this paper is to make a comparison between machine and deep learning methods for large 3D cultural heritage classification. Then, considering the best performances of both techniques, it proposes an architecture named DGCNN-Mod+3Dfeat that combines the positive aspects and advantages of these two methodologies for semantic segmentation of cultural heritage point clouds. To demonstrate the validity of our idea, several experiments from the ArCH benchmark are reported and commented

    Saving Cultural Heritage with Digital Make-Believe: Machine Learning and Digital Techniques to the Rescue

    The application of digital methods for content-based curation and dissemination of cultural heritage data offers unique advantages for physical sites at risk of damage. In areas affected by 2011 Arab spring, digital may be the only approach to create believable cultural experiences. We propose a framework incorporating computational methods such as: digital image processing, multi-lingual text analysis, and 3D modelling, to facilitate enhanced data archive, federated search, and analysis. Potential use cases include experiential search, damage assessment, virtual site reconstruction, and provision of augmented information for education and cultural preservation. This paper presents initial findings from an empirical evaluation of existing scene classification methods, applied to detection of cultural heritage sites in the Palmyra region. Results indicate that deep learning offers an appropriate solution to semantic annotation of publicly available cultural heritage image data

    In the last years, the application of artificial intelligence (Machine Learning and Deep Learning methods) for the classification of 3D point clouds has become an important task in modern 3D documentation and modelling applications. The identification of proper geometric and radiometric features becomes fundamental to classify 2D/3D data correctly. While many studies have been conducted in the geospatial field, the cultural heritage sector is still partly unexplored. In this paper we analyse the efficacy of the geometric covariance features as a support for the classification of Cultural Heritage point clouds. To analyse the impact of the different features calculated on spherical neighbourhoods at various radius sizes, we present results obtained on four different heritage case studies using different features configurations

    Applying Associative Classifier PGN for Digitised Cultural Heritage Resource Discovery

    Resource discovery is one of the key services in digitised cultural heritage collections. It requires intelligent mining in heterogeneous digital content as well as capabilities in large scale performance; this explains the recent advances in classification methods. Associative classifiers are convenient data mining tools used in the field of cultural heritage, by applying their possibilities to taking into account the specific combinations of the attribute values. Usually, the associative classifiers prioritize the support over the confidence. The proposed classifier PGN questions this common approach and focuses on confidence first by retaining only 100% confidence rules. The classification tasks in the field of cultural heritage usually deal with data sets with many class labels. This variety is caused by the richness of accumulated culture during the centuries. Comparisons of classifier PGN with other classifiers, such as OneR, JRip and J48, show the competitiveness of PGN in recognizing multi-class datasets on collections of masterpieces from different West and East European Fine Art authors and movements

    Orchestrating Cultural Heritage:Exploring the Automated Analysis and Organization of Charles S. Peirce's PAP Manuscript

    This preliminary study introduces an innovative approach to the analysis and organization of cultural heritage materials, focusing on the archive of Charles S. Peirce. Given the diverse range of artifacts, objects, and documents comprising cultural heritage, it is essential to efficiently organize and provide access to these materials for the wider public. However, Peirce's manuscripts pose a particular challenge due to their extensive quantity, which makes comprehensive organization through manual classification practically impossible. In response to this challenge, our paper proposes a methodology for the automated analysis and organization of Peirce's manuscripts. We have specifically tested this approach on the renowned 115-page manuscript known as PAP. This study represents a significant step forward in establishing a research direction for the development of a larger project. By incorporating novel computational methods, this larger project has the potential to greatly enhance the field of cultural heritage organization

    Development of a Methodology for Assessing the Technical Level of Cultural Heritage Objects in Construction

    Cultural objects (building and construction) that are considered as the most valuable segment of real estate in terms of historical heritage usually evaluated only by monetary aspects. Not concreteness of the approaches to the determination of the historical heritage objects leads to the fact that its original value often remains unread, the assessment has subjective character, reflects the values of certain time frame and place. Therefore, for the purpose of determination of value of the historical heritage objects, there is need for the creation of the unified classification system of their assessment. Thus, this research is considered to be very relevant. The paper investigates intangible factors that affect the evaluation of cultural heritage objects in construction. In the work a system of value indicators, which take into account not only tangible indicators but also the intangible value of cultural heritage objects, has been developed. Developed indicators system makes it possible to evaluate the historical and cultural value of real estate objects quite objectively on the contrary to common methods which deal only with monetary aspects of market price of such objects. A methodology for a comprehensive evaluation of cultural heritage objects has been formed as well. This methodology is based on both the traditional comparative approach and the system of value indicators.
