This paper results from a study through the association of location-based games and its game mechanics as potential forces in contexts of transmedia storytelling. There are several location-based games in the current market, in some cases, also related to transmedia storytelling. Applying these games in the tourism and transmedia contexts make the experience even more attractive and interactive while collecting information on those locations. The study of location-based games and its game mechanics in transmedia storytelling contexts is essential to understand what the best solutions for a location-based game in a transmedia context for tourism, applying it successfully on projects with larger dimensions. Understanding the theoretical foundations that underpin the basis of various game design guidelines, as well as the variety of game mechanics by which one can choose in accordance with the characteristics of each project help to figure out the best solutions for games based projects in location. After this study we developed a game based on location, situated within the FEUP campus - Lost in FEUP. Despite representing a small location, the framework developed is intended to be easily scalable to a location-based game for transmedia storytelling with the dimensions of a city. Then, we implemented a working prototype of a location-based game to guide the new students of FEUP and was also created a transmedia narrative. The tests and inquiries about the prototype implemented meant that several aspects were improved, above all, making the game even more intuitive. The results also showed that the main objectives were successfully met, considering the creation of a location-based game in a transmedia context, with scalable geo-referenced mechanics for projects with larger dimensions. This prototype was tested from the beginning to the end by some participants who approved this experience based on location and also confirmed the usefulness of other platforms of transmedia storytelling in gathering information about these locations. Thus, the necessary guarantees have been achieved, so that in future can be applied the knowledge of the research and the developed framework in location-based projects with the same characteristics but with higher scales

Social Tagging: Exploring the Image, the Tags, and the Game

An increasing amount of images are being uploaded, shared, and retrieved on the Web. These large image collections need to be properly stored, organized and easily retrieved. Tags have a key role in image retrieval but it is difficult for those who upload the images to also undertake the quality tag assignment for potential future retrieval by others. Relying on professional keyword assignment is not a practical option for large image collections due to resource constraints. Although a number of content-based image retrieval systems have been launched, they have not demonstrated sufficient utility on large-scale image sources on the web, and are usually used as a supplement to existing text-based image retrieval systems. An alternative to professional image indexing can be social tagging -- with two major types being photo-sharing networks and image labeling games. Here we analyze these applications to evaluate their usefulness from the semantic point of view. We also investigate whether social tagging behaviour can be managed. The findings of the study have shown that social tagging can generate a sizeable number of tags that can be classified as interpretive for an image, and that tagging behaviour has a manageable and adjustable nature depending on tagging guidelines

Collaborative Quality Controlled Collection and Semantic Integration of Spatial Data

Um es mit den Worten von Peltola et al. (2006) auszudrücken: ”game play is a natural motivator to participate in something that is not necessary or beneficial. [...] By controlling game events and perhaps game logics and rules, the agencies that ultimately use the gathered data, can steer players to do tasks supporting their needs“. In recent years, the proliferation of mobile devices capable of recording GPS coordinates has increased rapidly. Everyone owning such a device has the potential to be a ”voluntary sensor” (Goodchild, 2007) and as such provide useful information about his everyday environment. In my PhD thesis I want to investigate two research problems in the context of spatial data collected by these voluntary non-experts that are not solved yet: How can non-experts be motivated to collect quality controlled spatial data voluntarily? Therefore the first contribution of my PhD thesis is a framework to design location-based games that motivate voluntary non-experts to collect quality controlled spatial data in an entertaining way. To say it with Peltola et al. (2006): ”game play is a natural motivator to participate in something that is not necessary or beneficial. [...] By controlling game events and perhaps game logics and rules, the agencies that ultimately use the gathered data, can steer players to do tasks supporting their needs”. How can the quality of collections of semantically enhanced spatial data be improved? An important feature of location-based games for data collection is their replay ability. In contrast to other domains the redundant creation of data is very welcome in the context of spatial data. The integration of data from different users can be used to improve the quality of the localization (where?) and the categorization (what?) of such data. The second contribution of my PhD thesis is an approach to semantically integrate the collected spatial data
